Can Cellphones Be Educational Tools
"People are very protective of their cell phones, how it's used, where it's used and how
it costs. It has become a very personal issue for a whole lot of people in this country". This was
said by Steve Largent saying that cell phones are really a need for everybody today. We all
know that children are already equipped with high-tech gadgets in our generation today. They
have iPod, iphone, tablets, etc. All these gadgets are used for entertainment or as their
pastime. But some people claim that cell phones are not only for pastime but for good
purposes.
Cell phones are different from a computer lab filled with computers because the cell
phone is personal technology. School leaders worldwide are asking themselves an important
question these days "Do cell phones can be used as a legitimate tool for learning? The teachers
told that cell phones were banned by school policy. But some people use this for significant
matters. For them, it has a profitable role in our life.
There are many pro arguments for this case but there are three things which I think are
the most important. The first argument is Potential Misuse of Cell Phones During School Days.
Some people say that using cellular phones at school even though for class purposes is not a
good idea because it cause distraction. Which is true. Students may take advantage of the
gadget for other unnecessary purposes. Students might play video games in class.
And it can enable students to cheat during tests like texting each other the answers. The next
argument is The Use of E-books Instead of Real Books. Since these books will be available
online, people will be more favored to these stuffs. Cell phones will replace the printed
resources. But we know that books, articles, and other informative resources found online may
not be reliable. The third and final argument is Teachers Will Be Good-For-Nothing. Since
everything can be found in the internet, students will just use their phones to search on what
they want to learn. They will prefer to use cell phones than to listen to their teachers.
If there are pro arguments, there are also counterarguments. There are also three
counterarguments which are very much important. The first one is Cell Phones Will Teach
Students To Be Independent. Having a cell phone is like having all the information in world right
in your hands which is very beneficial to teachers because they wouldn’t have to answer a
plenty of questions from students when they can simply ask students to Google any questions
they have. The next argument is Apps Are Good For Education. Studying with a boring book that
is hard to understand is exciting but playing an educational app while studying is much more
exciting. Cell phones can be considered an educational tool because they consist of numerous
educational applications that enables one’s growth in knowledge. This includes Calculator. Lots
of students are required to have a calculator as one of their school supplies, but if they have
one on their phone, then they don’t have to get one. Another is the stop watch which can be
used in science class. And a Dictionary which can be very useful in a classroom setting. The third
and last argument is Communication. It's important to communicate with your family if
something bad happen to you or you just forgot something, to your friends and teachers if you
want to inform them that you're not going to school because of your bad condition, etc.
These arguments have good points in using cell phones as educational tool. But we do
not agree with the use of phones for studying. Because even though there are a lot of
advantages with the use of phones for education, there is still a higher rate of disadvantages.
Knowing that majority of today's generation use that gadget improperly and sometimes they
already abuse it.
Some might say that that cell phones should be allowed in schools. Yes it can improve
every students' learning. But let's all think that this can make students not participate in class
because they are already busy on what they are doing with their phones. When students do
this, their focus will be on the gadget and not on what the teacher is discussing. So we say that
the use of cell phones as an educational tool should not be implemented. It can be used for
emergency purposes but not for studying.
