DG - Slab Design S

This document provides design details for a reinforced concrete slab and footing. It includes slab dimensions, material properties, load calculations, reinforcement design, and checks for deflection and shear capacity. Reinforcement of 10mm bars at 150mm spacing is designed for the slab. A 1.2x1.2m square footing is designed to support a 0.3x0.3m column, with 25 nos of 12mm bars at 150mm spacing providing flexural reinforcement. Checks show the slab and footing designs meet code requirements.

End condition of slab

(DG Slab is designed as simply supported slab with all the four edges discontinuous)

Given data

length of shorter span = 3700 mm

length of longer span = 3500 mm
considering the depth of slab D = 150 mm
Dia. of bars Ø = 10 mm
effective cover = 20 mm
characteristic strength of concrete fck = 20 N/mm²
Grade of steel used fy = 415 N/mm²

Effective depth
dx = 125 mm
dy = 115 mm
Effective spans
lx = 3825 mm
ly = 3615 mm
ly/lx = 0.95
loads on slab

Dead load = 3.75 KN/mm²

Live load = 3.5 KN/mm²
Total load = 7.25 KN/mm²
Factored load wu = 10.88 KN/mm²

Bending moment coefficients (from IS 456:200 Table 26)

(from interpolation) αx = 0.1031

αy = 0.056

Design Moments (for middle strips,1m width in each direction)

Mux = 16.404 KNm/m
Muy = 7.959 KNm/m

Design of Reinforcement(for 1 m width)

Area of steel required (Ast.)x = 388.742 mm²/m

Area of steel required (Ast.)y = 198.911 mm²/m
Required spacing
In longer span = 201.93354
In shorter span = 394.64828

Maximum spacing for primary reinforcement = 345 (short span)

(As per IS Code 456:2000) 375 (long span)
300

Hence, we provide 10Ø @ 150 mm c/c

and 10Ø @ 150 mm c/c

Check for deflection (in longer span)

Area of steel provided = 523.333 mm²

fs = 91.49 Mpa
Percentage of steel Pt = 0.173
Modification factor (IS456:2000 Cl.23.2.1) kt = 1
(l/d)max. = 35
provided l/d = 30.60
Hence, safe
(short span)
(long span)
} min. 300
Size of footing
fck = 20 N/mm²
fy = 415 N/mm²
Size of column = 0.3 x
Axial load on column = 84 KN
Factored load on column = 126
Gross safe bearing capacity of soil = 300 KN/mm²
(Assume the backfill to be 10 % of axial load)
Area of footing required = 0.308 m²
Minimum the size of footing = 0.555
(we prefer square footing for square column for ease of calculation)
Assume size of footing = 1.2 x
upward pressure from soil = 64.17
safe

Thickness of footing slab based on shear

Net soil pressure at ultimate loads = 87.50 KN/m²
= 0.088 N/mm²
a). One way Shear
The critical section is at distance d from the column face
One way shear resistance ≤ K*τc
(For preliminary design we take K=1 and τc corresponding to 0.25% of steel)

τc = 0.36 N/mm²
Assume the depth of footing d = 230 mm
(For the safe design shear resistance capacity of the footing must be less than the applied factored shear force)
Factored shear force, Vu1 = 23100
one way shear resistance Vc1 = 99360

(If Vu1 > Vc1, then increase the depth of footing)

b).Two way shear

The critical section is at distance d/2 from face of column.

Factored shear force, Vu2 = 101421.3 N
For square column, Ks = 1.0
τc = 1.1
Two way shear resistance Vc2 = 545153.4 N

(If Vu2 > Vc2,then increase the depth of footing)

Assume the dia of bars used in footing Ø = 12 mm
Clear cover d' = 60 mm
overall depth, D = 302

Design of flexural reinforcement

Factored Bending Moment at column face Mu = 10631250.0 Nmm

Percentage of steel required (overall) Ast. = 0.047

Minimum steet required Ast.min. = 434.88 mm²

Percentage of steel minimum Pst.min. = 0.158

We provide 0.25% of steel as assumed earlier

Area of steel provided = 690
No. of bars provided = 6
spacing = 209.246

Hence provide 25 Nos of 10Ø bars @ 150 mm c/c in both ways.
