Case Study Presentation Using The Nutrition Care Process
Purpose: The oral case study presentation allows the student to develop and in-depth
understanding of the relationship between the disease process and nutrition
status, and apply the nutrition care process and to gain additional experience in organizing
and delivering a presentation to a group of peers and experts.
K.R. 2.1.a Students are able to demonstrate effective and professional oral and written
communication and documentation and use of current use current information
technologies when communicating with individuals, groups and the public.
K.R. 3.1.a Students are able to use the nutrition care process to make decisions, to identify
nutrition-related problems and determine and evaluate nutrition interventions,
including medical nutrition therapy, disease prevention and health promotion.
K.R. 3.1.b Students are able to apply knowledge of the role of the environment, food and lifestyle
choices to develop interventions to affect change and enhance wellness in diverse
individuals and groups.
The student is expected to be well-versed on the subject of the case study and be able to field questions
from the audience.
The cases that have been chosen do have a specific nutritional implication.
Required Items
______Review the simulated electronic medical record for one case study patient.
______The presentation will be given using PowerPoint software (visual aids as needed but not
required) using third person.
______Power point (in final form) will be given to instructor on day of presentation as 3 slides per page.
______Dress professionally.
______Start promptly. Have the power point downloaded before class so class can begin immediately.
Introduction
Discuss primary diagnosis including etiology, pathophysiology and current medical and
nutritional treatment modalities.
Presentation of case
Assessment – See evaluation rubric for what to include.
Diagnosis – See evaluation rubric for what to include. Discuss in detail one primary nutritional
problem.
Intervention/Care Plan – See evaluation rubric for what to include.
Research Review - Include current literature for appropriate nutrition
intervention and includes slides on current recommendations and guidelines.
Provide slides with 1-2 studies that discuss the most recent research or
guidelines related to the nutrition intervention recommendation how they are or
are not related to your case. In depth literature review expected. Understand the
rationale or theory behind the medical and nutrition current treatments.

Summary
Indicate what you learned from the case study and reaction to the experience.
References on slide in APA format

Evaluation:
Written evaluation forms will be completed by all in the audience and summarized by the instructor. See
attached evaluation form.
If presentation does not meet standards, you may be asked to provide a written report addressing
outstanding issues due one week after presentation.
