an "i love you. i love you too" once in a while is moderate enough. but a "sweetie"
literally everytime they casually address each other? like holy flying lemurs, the
audience GETS it. they're in an official relationship. you'd think they force "sweetie" in
just in case we might forget after every page. Sokka becomes relatable.

That's the whole idea. Some will like it; some like Sokka will find their authentic
outward expression of their romance icky. For all three of them, as Matthew Gavin
said, it's completely in-character.

Think back to how Toph referred to Katara as Sugar Queen. She and Aang are
innocent as can be. What else would they do?

Exactly. They're teens in the beginning of romance, and both innocent as can be. It fits the
characters and gives depth to their interactions--that goes for Sokka too. Of course he's
going to feel how he feels, just as Katara and Aang fit their characters in this. Nothing forced
about it. The writers are well aware the audience knows the characters are in a romantic
relationship.

The oogies balance the romance for those who aren't so keen on the outward expression of
it. The purpose is to endear Sokka to the reader and make him relate-able by reflecting the
feelings of a large segment of the audience. It also helps to humanize these all-powerful
saviors of the world.

Hmm. Maybe, and maybe not. Throughout the series, he had an internal struggle between
his father and his uncle. Iroh (and much of the audience) thought Zuko had turned a corner,
but then wham--back to the Fire Nation and Ozai at first chance.

He was supposed to have learned from all that. I'm not sure why Iroh wouldn't have at least
been an adviser, but I suppose he had more of a heart for his tea shop half a world away. So
because he confronted Ozai, Ozai's voice is in Zuko's ear--he's right there, not far away. He
planted the seed of doubt, which sprouted in Zuko's mind. Zuko truly wants the best for his
people and is perhaps "losing sight of the forest for all of the trees," as the saying goes.
Soul's comment about stress plays in here too--he's frantically, desperately looking for
someone to share the burden.

I mean, if you've see TLOK, you know how they ultimately solve this matter. They just haven't
figured that out yet.

I think that this is a really good comic and all but, did Aang just throw some of the things he learnt in the
show away. In The Swamp episode and the Guru episode Aang learns that "separation is an illusion" and
"Everything is connected". So why doesn't he remember this here.

Bingo. It's an inner conflict between how things were before he froze himself for 100 years
and the whirlwind of the past two years he has had. As a complex person (like many of us),
his nostalgia is usurping his futurism in this situation. He hasn't figured out the proper
balance yet because he hasn't thought about the possibilities of a new way of balance.

On the note of Roku, I think T3D might be right. I think the writers could have done better:
have Aang be surprised that Roku STILL thought that--even AFTER Aang demonstrated an
alternative pathway of removing bending.

They know the vast majority of the audience's last memory of the series was the kiss. They
obviously aren't doing it to remind anyone. The POINT is to be nauseatingly sweet. That's
how the 'honeymoon phase' of young love tends to be--especially with a pair as innocent as
Katara and Aang.

That's why they have Sokka there to declare the oogies. He speaks on behalf of not just
himself, but the audience. It's authentic character development meant to endear Sokka to
the readers as a reflection of themselves.
