Lab 3 - Hydrostatic Forces On Plane and Curved Surfaces

This laboratory experiment aimed to quantify the hydrostatic forces on plane and curved surfaces using a center of pressure apparatus. The experiment measured the added weights needed to balance the apparatus at different water levels around the flat and curved surfaces. Calculations were done to determine the hydrostatic forces on each surface. The results showed that the hydrostatic force on the curved surface was greater than that on the plane surface, in accordance with hydrostatic principles. Proper setup and equipment were needed to obtain accurate results.

Objectives

This laboratory activity aims to determine the hydrostatic forces acting on the surface of the apparatus. Specifically
the activity aims to:

(1) To quantify the hydrostatic forces that acts on the plane surface.
(2) To quantify the hydrostatic forces that acts on the curved surface.
(3) To verify the location of the center of pressure acting on plane surface.

Equipment

(1) Center of pressure apparatus

(2) Set of weights

Procedures

(1) Align the bubble at the apparatus and adjust the weight at the rear until the mark is leveled.
(2) Fill the apparatus with water up to around the upper edge of the flat surface.
(3) Add some weight to the center end until the torus balances. Record the added weight.
(4) Repeat the process with the water level around the middle part of the flat surface

** post activity measurements: Measure the distances of the weights to the pivot. Measure also the weight of the

Conclusion

Base on the computation that we have, the horizontal and vertical component of the curve surface is affected by
whether the liquid is below or above it. There are also a lot of possible ways to get the forces using this apparatus,
you can measure below or above the submerged equipment but always remember that acquiring the moment should
equate to zero no matter what because of equilibrium. The hydrostatic force of plane surface is less than the
hydrostatic force of the curved surface.

Recommendation

This experiment should the perform in a balance surface to get positive or optimum result.
