What are the advantages and disadvantages of our ever-

increasing use of computer technology?

For the time being, computer technology is used in a variety of different ways
for everyday life and it has become every person’s necessity because everybody is
using technology to some degree, for elementary actions like calling a friend or for
ingenious engineering solutions like using a computerized self-driving electric
vehicle. In fact, computers have revolutionized our lives more than anything we have
invented so far and today it is hardly possible to imagine the world without this
innovation. Furthermore, technology is intensely used in education, industry,
medical procedures, medical research, banking and business etc. On the other hand,
some people worry that the increasing reliance on computers in our daily lives is
beginning to prevent healthy social interactions, makes many people lose their job
and viruses can gain unauthorized access over our personal computer for some illicit
purposes or, even worse, computers may be used in order to commit cyber-crimes.
To begin with, we are living in the modern developed society and it’s
extremely difficult to imagine today our casual life without the improvements
offered by the computer technologies. Nowadays it’s hard to define any electronic
device without a small or advanced chip inside. Some years ago people needed to
create some appliances which could make difficult calculations and control technical
procedures in very complicated ways but now technology was invented to make the
life easier because of technical revolution and computer development.
Secondly, a major advantage of computers is that they are time-saving devices,
making all kinds of work more effective and easier. All branches of science and
industry make use of them, for example in factories computers control assembly
lines and in hospitals they assist certain extremely difficult and precise operations.
Computers are the basis of amazing technological solutions like to usage of remote
surgery or like doing a complete scanning of the human body.
Undoubtedly, a major benefit of computer technology is that it creates the
Internet, which has become the most important source of a variety of information
and which is used all over the world to improve communication. Furthermore,
people can keep their private data and information on the computers and also send
emails instantly from almost every place around the globe. Moreover, Internet is a
great source of information and it enables students to increase their knowledge and
develop their research, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills only
because it offers them unlimited possibilities. Not only it does provides access to all

necessary information but also it enables all of us to do online shopping, paying bills,
finding work or contacting our friends quickly and easily. Even more, with modern
computer technology some people don’t even need to go to work but instead they
can work from home.
On the other hand, our ever-increasing use of computers has not only
profitable advantages but also appalling disadvantages. Information available via the
Internet is not fully controlled and thus young children have access to websites
connected with pornography or violence. Some children watch violence videos, and
they try to imitate to the movies because they are not able to think what is good or
what is bad.
What is more, computers are addictive. It is easy to lose a contact with the real
life by playing computer games, chatting in the Internet chat rooms or surfing the
Internet for long hours. Furthermore, spending too much time in front of a computer
screen has harmful impact on our health. It results in weakness of sight, pain in the
back or defects in the spine and even causes obesity to some children. There are a
lot of mental illnesses, depressions, stresses and even suicides because of computer
addiction and the surplus of information. Many people are dependent on it and very
often some number of people have lack of time to spend with their families because
it takes control of them. Sometimes, technology could destroy people’s social life
and their normal interactions with other humans.
Nevertheless, the number of crimes committed by hackers is still increasing.
Therefore, there is a permanent danger that somebody will hack your computer
system and steal some important, private or sensitive data. Also, it cannot be denied
that computer technology is one of the main causes of the unemployment problem
as computerization makes many people lose their job because automated machines
have proved to work with a much higher efficiency.
Taking everything into consideration, it is obvious that computer technology
has countless advantages but also terrible disadvantages if we do not maintain the
appropriate balance when using it. Needless to say, computer technology is
indispensable for the future development of our civilization and it is influencing
more and more our needs since computers are becoming faster, better and cheaper
machines every year. I strongly believe that, however useful computers might be,
they are here for us and not the other way around and we must always remember
that computers are only machines, which cannot ever replace human beings!
