1.0 INTRODUCTION

STUDENT INDUSTRIAL WORK EXPERIENCE SCHEME.

The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was established by Industrial
Training Fund (I.T.F) in 1974 to bridge the gap between theory and practice. The fund
carried out a study revealed disparity between theory and practice of Engineering
Technology and Applied Disciplines.

SIWES is a skill training programme designed to expose and prepare students of

Universities, Polythecnics and colleges of Education for industrial work situation these
are likely to meet after graduation. It was also to familiarize student with work study
methods and expose them to the needed experience in handling such equipment and
machinery that are not usually available in the educational institutions.

The theoretical education going on in higher institutions is not responsive enough to the
needs of the employer of labour.

Polythecnics and colleges of Technology students on the ND programmes in relevant

courses will have four months industrial attachment at the end of their first year while
students in the universities will have six months at a stretch at the end of 200, 300 or 400
level. Students in preliminary classes are not eligible.

1.1 THE OBJECTIVES OF SIWES INCLUDE

1. To provide an avenue for students in institutions of higher learning to acquire

industrial skills and experience in their courses of studies of study. e.g
Engineering and Allied fields.

2. To prepare students for the working situation they are to meet after graduation.
3. To expose students to work method and technique in handling equipment and
machinery that may not be available in educational institutions.

4. To make the transition from school to the world of work easier and to enhance
students contact for later job placement.

5. To provide the student with the opportunity to apply his knowledge in real
situation theory thereby bringing the gap between school work and practical work.

6. To enlist and strengthen employer’s involvements in the entire educational

process of preparing students for employment in industry.

1.2 EXPECTED ROLES OF STUDENT ON SIWES

1. To attend institutions SIWES orientation programme before going on attachment.

2. Ensure that employer complete their SPE – 1 form and forward same to the I.T.F
area offices.

3. Keep standard log-books where they record all training activities and other
assignment.

4. Get the log books signed by the industry board supervisors institution based
supervisor and ITF officials.

5. Be regular and punctual at their respective place of attachment.

6. Be obedient to constituted authorities and adhere strictly to all rule and

regulations of the organization.

7. Avoid change of place of attachment except for special circumstances which must
be determined and approved by their institution supervisor, the employer and the
ITF.

8. Be diligent, honest and conscientious take pride in the protection of employer’s

property throughout the attachment period.

9. Complete the end of programme evaluate for (ITF Form 8)

1.3 THE INDUSTRIAL TRAINING FUND (ITF)

The industrial Training Fund established S.I.W.E.S carrying out a study that revealed
disparity between theory and practice of Engineering Technology and Applied
Disciplined in the country.

The I.T.F is responsible for implementation of SIWES with the funding being solely
borne by the Federal Government.

THE FUNCTION OF ITF

1. Formalized policies and guideline on SIWES for distribution to all the SIWES
participating bodies institution and companies involved in the scheme.

2. Regularly organize orientation programme for students prior their attachments.

3. Receive and process master and placement lists from the institution and
supervising agencies tie (NUC,BNTE, NCCE)

4. Supervise student in Industrial Attachment

5. Disburse supervisory and students allowances.

6. Organize Biennial SIWES National Conference and SIWES Revenue Meeting

7. Provide insurance cover for student in Attachment

8. Provide logistics and materials necessary for effective administration of the

scheme.

9. Ensure the visitation (tour) of ITF officers to the supervising Agencies Institutions
Employers and Students in Attachment.

10. Provide information in companies and assist in the Industrial placement of

Students.

11. Continously review and carryout research into the operation of Scheme

12. Vet and process student logbooks and ITF form 8

13. Prepare and reconcile payment records for annual accountability to Federal
ministries
CHAPTER TWO

2.0 BACKGROUND INFORMATION

2.1 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE COMPANY

Choice project consultant Nigeria limited where I was attached during my SIWES was
established on 1st of January 1997 at No 88 Sunmonu Oyeleke Complex Olofa way Offa kwara
State. This company has done many projects in Offa and other places all over the country, and
their nature of business is building services & consultancy and area of specialization is building
infrastructural services.
CHAPTER THREE

3.0 TECHNICAL TRAINING EXPERIENCE

Items should be considered in layout of construction site for the property by a setting out.
The following steps should be taking.

3.1 SITE INVESTIGATION

It is important to investigate or carryout some test on the land that the construction is
going to be taken place. Site investigation is the process of collection of the information the
appraised of data assessment and reporting without which the hazard in the ground beneath the
site cannot be know.

OBJECTIVES OF SITE INVESTIGATION

i. To select the rest suitable foundation types

ii. To indentify ground water conditions and fluctuations with depth
iii. To obtain representation samples of the layers soil we shall be going through

3.2 SITE CLEARANCE

It involves of tress, bushes and topsoil on the ground before the commencement of the
work. This is the first operation to undertake in any job involving earth work.

Access to Site: - For the site to be properly laid out, the site must have access road for easy
movement of people and the material to be used.

Nature of the Soil: - It is essential and advisable in the part of civil engineering to examine the
nature of the soil. By so doing, it enables the engineer or the contractor to know the type of
foundation to be used.

3.3 SETTING OUT OF BUILDING

Setting out of building is done by using the survey instrument to transfer the information
on paper to the ground.
Setting out’ refers to the act of measuring and marking out a full size plan of a building or
element of a building on site. It can also be define as the process of transferring what is on the
plan to the ground.

Types of instrument used during the setting out of building

 Builder’s square
 Nails
 Wooden pegs
 Lines
 Measuring tape
 Hammer
 Block
3.4 EXCAVATION

Excavation is the remover (digging ) of earth material along the setting out line. It is the remover
of top soil and the act of creating a foundation trenches. It usually three (3) times of the size of
block to be use by width and dept will be base on design.

Method adopted during exaction

Manual method: usually for strip foundation which carry out by the use of digger and shovel to
excavate the trench between 450mm and 675mm in another to create allowance for work.

3.5 FOUN0DATION

Foundation is the lower part of building (sub-structure) with comprises of blocks, sub-columns,
footing and trenches

Block is the solid materials with a definite shapes and size that made from sand, cement and
water which made up a building.

Sub-column is the vertical component of foundation which is made of reinforce concrete.

Foundation footing is the lowest part of the building component that have direct contact with
the ground and it also transfer the load from the hole structure to the ground.
Foundation trenches is the excavated part of a site in which the foundation footing will casted
in.

Foundation used during the processing

Strip foundation: - This type of foundation that generally adopted for lower rise building (up to
four floors).

3.6 BACKFILLING

This can be done by filled back the surface of the sub structure after the wall is been
completed erected.

3.7 COMPACTION

This done by the use of rammer to compact the soil together for maximum density for the
stability of the soil.

3.8 BLOCK SETTING

This is the arrangement of bricks or block of stretcher or header bond together to form
wall.

3.9 BLOCK WALL

Block wall: in the making of estimation of block wall, we need to know the following
parameters.

i. Height of the building

ii. Length of the building
iii. Block wall thickness

Block: Is made up of cement;, water and sand mixed together and pour into the mould to form
block.

Size of Hollow Block

 225mm block (9 inches) size

 150mm block (6 inches) size

3.10 LINTEL

Lintel is a vertical structural component on the building that allow setting of blocks above the
opening.

3.11 LEVELING

Leveling is the laying of blocks above the beam and the lintel to meet the require height of the
building.
CHAPTER FOUR
4.0 CONCLUSION AND RECOMENDATION

4.1 CONCLUSION

The Student’s Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) programme is of great

importance as it exposes students to the world at work in their respective discipline. Also, it
matches theoretical classroom knowledge with related practice in the Industrial environment.
The practical experiences I have acquired have a clear understanding of theories
throughout my first year in school.

Finally, the school Authority should assure that participation is adequate to the field of
study.

4.2 RECOMMENDATION

I recommended this project to the entire civil engineering department students. This is
because a lot of knowledge will be gained, more so, this program is compulsory for students in
tertiary institution of learning. I also recommended that the student industrial training should
continue for the following reason:

 It enables the student to have more knowledge in the field of specialization.

 It also helps the students to know about the practical aspect of their course.
