HPCL Study Material

Group tasks are used to assess participants' interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills. Participants are randomly assigned to a group and given a problem to solve together. The recruitment team evaluates members as active, passive, or projective based on their contribution. Active members who interact, encourage others, and find logical solutions while maintaining good rapport are preferred. Passive members who do not participate are not suitable. Projective members who over-volunteer ideas may be selected if other redeeming qualities are shown. The group must work together to find a solution within the time limit.

What is a Group Task?

Group Tasks are generally given to a random group of person (usually based on
their reservation category or branch of specialization or selected operation) to judge
a participant's interpersonal, communication and leadership skills. This also helps
check a participant's capability to outstand in a group while adapting to the group's
code of conduct.

You will be assigned to a group, the group decides leader, the problem is given, the
logic is applied and the solution is found. Now the key point is how the solution is
found.

The recruitment team will be looking for three kinds of group members

1. Active member
2. Passive member
3. Projective member
The active members are those who interact, are creative with their ideas, encourage
other members to come forward with their ideas, do a dedicated logical reasoning to
find out a solution and have generally good rapport with most of the group members.
These are the ones who are preferred for employment.

The passive members just stay shut, depend on others for their ideas, don't
participate in group discussions and never volunteer anything. These are deemed
not suitable for the employment.

The projective members are the ones who volunteer a lot, are hyperactive, steal
other's ideas and act like they know everything. There is a very good chance that
these persons don't get selected at all. But they might be selected if the recruitment
team finds some redeeming qualities in them. These are always preferred than
passive members.

Usually the questions asked will be on economics, optimization and design.

Sometimes marketability and rating might also be asked. The question is usually a
logical one and not bookish. All you need is thinking out of box and thinking from
both consumer and seller point of view.

You don't need to show sophisticated language fluency skills or act superior to
others in your group. You should have audible, with clear accent, engaging attitude,
encouraging nature and not too selfish mentality. Consider your team as your family
and assign them tasks you think best suited if you are the team lead. If someone
else is selected as the leader, don't hold grudge against him/her and just work for the
overall good of the group.

Remember, group's success will be your success.

Examples of Case Studies:

Case 1: a Xerox machine needs to be manufactured which should give colored copies but
the cost of these colored copies should be less than general black and white copy. The
manufacturing cost of those new photo copying machine needs to be reduced in order to
increase the profit of company. To reduce manufacturing cost low cost components are used
which degrades the quality of copy. But only 30 % people can detect those degraded
changes while rest 70% people don't predict the change. We need to give a solution for this
whether to reduce the cost of manufacturing for benefits of company or not

Case 2: You are head of a company. A person XYZ is working in your company. But few of
his colleagues complain about him that he don't work full time and works only 3-4 days in a
week. Apart from this they also complain that he does some part time side business which is
gaining him more profit. But his performance is far better than other and is providing profits
to the company. What action will you take?

Case 3: You are head of company. your company wants to replace a new technology XYZ
with the old one ABC. license of your old technology expires in few months and needs to to
be renewed. The employers are used to old technology and don't need any formal training
for the same. The new technology requires lots of training and for this the employers must
work over time. But employers are not ready to do over time. What solutions will you provide
to company.
The case studies are quite simple but you need to give some logical solutions for this and try
to “LEAD “ your group

Case 4: In my case there was this plane crash situation which was crashed in that desert
stating number of survivors and items that we are left with us in order to survive. Now after
this dreadful situation we were required to recommend the whole strategy by which we will
survive by consensus among ourselves. We were given 20 minutes for discussion and 10
minutes for giving the conclusion.

Case 5: You are given 500 crore and you have to develop a village with the
given population and area within one year. Devise a strategy.

Case 6: You are in a backward village/area of India. People are not interested in
educating their children. Develop a strategy to convince them to send their
children to school.

Now Group task is totally different. You don’t have to prepare anything for GTs. Here
instead of a topic, a task will be given to you (and other 9 members with you) and
you have to make a strategy to complete the task by working with your teammates.
Remember that now you all are part of a team and you have to complete the task
together. Do not interrupt or cross question your teammates while they are giving
their suggestions. If you think you have a better idea then present it in front of them
and say that if we’ll implement this, then it’ll be more beneficial for the team.

You have to develop a strategy, find out the difficulties you are going to face while
implementing the strategy and present it to examiner at the end. Purpose of GT is to
check the spirit of Team Work and Leadership quality.
