ELEVATOR PITCH FOR JOB

SEEKERS

Welcome! Here are the steps for creating your job search "Elevator Pitch".

Then on the next page, you'll find word-for-word examples to help you further.

3 Steps for a Great Job Search Elevator Pitch:

Step 1: Who are you and what do you do? Your background, skills, and brief
summary. What are you an expert in? Or what have you chosen to focus your
career on?

Step 2: Why should they care? Get specific about what you've done recently
and/or what you're working on right now. Mention something unique that will
help you stand out and catch their attention.

Step 3: What do you want? Why did you want to have a conversation?  What is
your goal or what are you hoping to achieve next in your career?

Now let's look at some word-for-word examples on the next page...

 EXAMPLES

Example #1 (for a networking event, career event, conference, etc.)

Hi, I’m David. I’m a Scientist specializing in chemistry and new product discovery. I
currently work at Johnson & Johnson and my team is developing a new
antibacterial cream that will be released this month. So, I’m interested in meeting
people with similar backgrounds, and I’m also considering changing jobs this year
so I’m hoping to learn about the work environments in different companies.

Example #2 (for interviews, including if they ask "tell me about yourself")

I'm a Scientist with 5 years of experience in chemistry and new product discovery.
I currently work at Johnson & Johnson and my team is developing a new
antibacterial cream that will be released this month. For the next step in my
career, I would like to find an opportunity where I can lead more projects while
still working hands-on part of the time. I saw on the job description that this
position seems to offer that, so I was eager to have an interview to learn more.

If you just graduated and have no work experience, talk about a specific academic
project or something unique you focused on studying, for step #2 of your pitch.
