INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN IN SCIENCE 8

Grade Level: 8 Date: January 7,2020
Quarter Second
Time Allotment 60 minutes

Content Standard Demonstrate Understanding of the identity of the substance of a substance

according to its atomic structure.
Performance
Standard
Learning Determine the number of protons, neutrons and electrons in a particular
Competency atoms.(S8MT-IIIe-f10).

I. Learning The Grade 8 learners are expected to:

Objective 13. Calculate the mass number of given elements (D)
14. Determine the number of protons, neutrons and electrons in an atom. (D)
II. Subject Atoms and Molecules.
Matter
A. Concept  Atoms are building blocks. If you want to create a language, you’ll
need an alphabet. If you want to build molecules ,you will need atoms
from different elements. Elements are the alphabet in the language of
molecules.
 Atoms can bond together into groups and form a molecule. If the
molecule contains atoms of different types bonded together, we call it
a compound.

B. Materials Metacards, Manila Paper, Activity Sheet

C. References  Science Learner’s Material, g8 203-205.
 Science Link 8 pages 40-45.

Tools
A. Engage  The teacher will post a picture showing an image of the structure of an
Strategy used by atom.
the teacher: Picture  A picture of a universe:
Analysis Analogy of an atom with nucleus (sun) and electron around (planet).

Skills used by the

leaner: Observing,
communicating.

 Ask:
1.What do you see in the picture?
2. How does the picture relate to the structure of an atom.
 Possible responses
1. Sun, Planet and orbits.
2. The sun represents the nucleus, the planets represent the electrons
and the orbits represent the shells.
(The teacher will write some of the students answer on the blackboard)
(After soliciting the answers of the students, teacher proceed)

 The teacher will post a scrambled letter on the board showing the
different terms related to the topic.
Introduction to atom:
 Atom consists of three sub atoms which are proton, electron and
neutron.
 Proton number (atomic number)
 The number of proton found in nucleus of an atom. Represented by
symbol (Z) in the periodic table.
 Atomic number equal to the number of electron.
 Mass number =Total number of proton and neutron; represented by
symbol (A). Mass number differs from each different isotope.
 The difference between the mass number and atomic number gives the
number of neutron (N). Formulae: N=A-Z
 Isotope –atom that contain the same number of proton but have
different number of neutron which differ from atom to atom without
changing the designation of the atom as a particular element.
B. Explore  The teacher will group the students into 6 groups
Strategy used by  Introduce the rules in the making the activity:
the teacher: 1.No one is allowed to use their gadgets.
Discovery Method 2.Cooperate with the class in performing the activity.
3.Do not make unnecessary noise.
4.Don’t play with the materials
Skills used by the 5.Finish the activity on time
leaner:  The teacher ask the students to proceed to their assigned group and make
Predicting,Observin them a circle within their group
g, communicating.  The teacher will let each group to assigned a leader, time keeper, material
manager, recorder and writer.
 Each group will be given 15mins to finish the activity.
 The exponent of each element is their atomic number and the subscript is
their mass number.
Element Atomic Mass # of p+ # of e- # of n0
