Diegetic Sound

This document discusses diegetic and non-diegetic sounds in films. It defines diegetic sound as any noise that has a visible on-screen source that characters can hear, like dialogue or doors closing. Non-diegetic sounds do not have a visible source and are added in editing, like background music or narration. Examples are provided of scenes using both diegetic and non-diegetic sounds to set mood or add meaning for the audience. The document also introduces the concepts of empathetic sound that matches the on-screen action and anempathetic sound that contrasts with or stands in opposition to what is happening.

• In other words, are the noises that characters cannot hear.

• In this video, is possible to evidence different examples of diegetic
sound and non diegetic sound. At the beginning of the video, the
director decides to put only diegetic sounds, such as the table, the
lights, the door.., But as soon as Gordon's exits the scene and
batman enters, the author starts adding some non diegetic effects,
such as suspense music and some kind of outside noises that give
the scene a different tone, which is a mix of suspense and action.

• In this example we can analyze that the scene starts with diegetic
sounds and in its development starts to add diegetic sounds. In this
case the scene shows diegetic sounds like the closing of the door, the
sound of the remote turning the tv on, the news on the tv and afterwards
the song when peter puts its headphones and the music is shown at first
as a diegetic sound and then is changed into a non-diegetic sound
