Dear SEFI member ,

Joined: 23 Feb 2010 I am designing a machine foundation by STAADPRO solid elements since it is the client's
Posts: 22 requiremnt . I have done manually calculation on machine foundations ,but client requires results
by STAADPRO .My query is how to give the harmonic loading Command in STTADPRO .I am
refering to example 22 of STAAD examples We have to give iin STAADPRO the vendor's
permissible amplitude ,machine frequency ,& the cycle of loading .The STAAD command of
Example22 is as follows

DEFINE TIME HISTORY

TYPE 1 FORCE
FUNCTION SINE
AMPLITUDE 6.231 FREQUENCY 60 CYCLES 100

STAAD manual says CYCLES is the cycle of loading . What is the cycle of loading in a machine . As
far as I know there are unbalanced forces acting at different c.o.g.s of the machine parts,but what
this cycle of loading.

As for the soil damping should it be ignored (As done in Barkan's method) or I have to consider it
as done by the elastic half space method of Arya Pinclus Handbook.
should I use value of Cu(Coeefficient of uniform compresson) to generate springs ( Cu value has
been given by the soil consultant).

Dear Mr Amit

I am really surprised to see that when such Classical method of analysing a machine
foundation is available,your clients is asking for STAAD results.

Whenever someone have any doubt on machine foundation one he should always
write what type of machine it is(rotary,reciprocating, impact etc).

Now coming to your question

Machine manufacturer provides the operating speed of the machine which is in
Revolution per minute..when divided by 60 will convert it into cycles per second or

hertz.So this is the machine operating frequency.

Now
Time history Syntax
DEFINE TIME HISTORY
TYPE 1 FORCE
FUNCTION SINE
AMPLITUDE 10 FREQUENCY 60 CYCLES 60

Say here amplitude of forcing function is 10 KN,operating frequency is 60 cps and I

have entered cycles as 60.What it means is the force will act for 1 second and so
on.similarly u can increase the cycles
A sine function is a continous function.However in STAAD this is not treated as
continuous..instead a discrete time force pair is created and applied

Now comming to manual process

Generally this methods are available

Generally the following method is used for dynamic analysis of block type machine
foundation

1) Barkan method or linear elastic spring method

2) Elastic half space method.

3) The impedance function method.

Out of the of above three methods for the dynamic analysis of block type machine
foundation-Barkan method or linear elastic spring method is the most commonly used
in design offices because the method is simple in both understanding and
implementation and hence popular.

Limitations of Barkan method.

The major limitations of Barkan’s method are as follows

• Barkan’s model does not consider damping into account.

• It does not account for the embedment effect of the surrounding soil

• Barkan suggested the coefficient of uniform elastic compression of the soil to be

obtained from dynamic plate load test and may only give correct values for a shallow
depth but not valid for for layered soil.

It is always better to go for Elastic Half space method..the the method involve tedious
manual calculation.If u can do this than it is well and good.
Further there are two type of damping-geometric and material damping.

If u want to apply this to STAAD u have to calculate the spring value manually taking
the effect of damping also and apply to model
Further
A rigid block foundation supporting a vibrating machine can experience up to six
modes of vibration .The vertical and twisting modes are usually independent and
decoupled ,Whereas the modes associated with rocking and horizontal sliding along
Y axis are coupled

Now once you model the block foundation in STAAD you will not be able to couple
the modes.Here you have use the result of decoupled modes.

Dear Sukanta ,
Joined: 23 Feb 2010 Thanks for your suggestion . I have done several machine foundations (block foundations)
Posts: 22 manually & the manual results will obviously give better results & I am fully aware of the theories
,however it is my first attempt to do it on computer .
The machine is reciprocating & the block frequency will lie close to the machine frequency .
However after I model it in STAAD I will surely share the results with you .
