In Russian there is only one present tense.

So: Я читаю means both: "I read" and "I am reading"

This lesson is about second conjugation.

The second conjugation has endings: -у(-ю), -ишь, -ить, -им, -ите, -ат (-ят)

1. Infinitives ending in –ить:

Verbs with the ending -ить are verbs of the second conjugation.

There are two exceptions - verbs брить (to shave) and те ить (to lay), they are
first conjugation verbs.

To form the present tense we need to remove the three last letters -ить and add the
needed ending.

And now we will consider it using the verb рить

я говорю I speak
ты говоришь you speak
он, она, оно говорит he, she, it speaks
мы говорим we speak
вы говорите you (plural or formal) speak
они говорят they speak

2. Infinitives ending in –еть:

There are seven verbs with -еть in the end which belongs to the second conjugation:

мотр ть to see
т р ть to bear
ави ть to depend Almost all of these verbs have different

We will use м треть as an example:

я мотрю I see
ты мотришь you see
он, она, оно мотрит he, she, it sees
мы мотрим we see
вы мотрите you (plural or formal) see
они мотрят they see

3. Infinitives ending in –ать:

Yes, occasionally second conjugation verbs end in -ать.

We will consider it with the verb ричать

As you see the infinitive ends in -ать, but it belongs to the second conjugation.

That is why we can't define the conjugation, relying only on the ending of the
infinitive form only.

So to conjugate the verb ричать we follow the same pattern which we used for -
ить verbs

я кричу I scream
ты кричишь you scream
он, она, оно кричит he, she, it screams
мы кричим we scream
вы кричите you (plural or formal) scream
они кричат they scream

4. New spelling rules:

Important to mention two other spelling rules in Russian:

-ча -ща ишу уквой -а -чу -щу ишу уквой -у

I write -ча -ща with the letter -а I write -чу -щу with the letter -у
