LESSON PLAN IN MAPEH 7

I. OBJECTIVES

A. Content Standard
The learners demonstrates understanding of the characteristics of music from the lowlands of Luzon.
B. Performance Standard
The learner performs music of thelowlands with appropriate pitch, rhythm, expression and style.
C. Learning Objectives
1.Identifies the different secular music from the lowlands of Luzon.
2. Sing folksongs of the Lowlands of Luzon accompanied by improvised instrument available in surrounding and create
apropriate movements or gestures to accompany the music .
3 Appreciates the significant social functions and purposes of secular music.

B. Checking of Good morning, Who are absent today? No, Ma’am!

C. Review/ recall Lets have a short review. What was our previous Ma’am ,our last topic last meeting was
discussion all about? about the sacred music of Luzon.
Correct! Then ,what is sacred music? Ma’am it is the Liturgical and Devotional
music.
That’s right! What are the different sacred music of Mass or the songs sang during Liturgical
Luzon? Give one. Celebration or Mass.
Yes,that’s good,what else? Pasyon or song about life and Passion of
Christ.
Correct! What else? Salubong or a song that is sung during the
Ressurection of Jesus Christ,the meeting
of Jesus and His mother during the dawn
of Easter Sunday.

That’s right and what else? Flores de Mayo or a song for Mama Mary
during May Flower Festival.
Very good! So those are some example of sacred music of
Introductory Activity Luzon,but there is still more, we have also , Senakulo,
Santa Cruzan,Pastores and Credo.

Okay,Im glad that you learned a lot from our last


discussion. Now let’s proceed to our new lesson for today.

A. MOTIVATION
Activity 1. Sing Along
The students will listen to instrumental music with lyrics
entitled “O Ilaw”.
What is the song trying to convey to the listeners? (Its about love and courtship,Ma’am.)

How will you describe the characteristics of their music? (It is sung with emotion)

Activity 2 Group Activity
Divide the class into six groups. Each group will be given Group 1- Harana
metacards ( containing the history , composers, and Group 2 –Kumintang
sample music.) and scrambled letters written on a Group 3 – Polka
cartolina. The group will arrange the scrambled letters and Group 4 – Kundiman
using the meta cards the students will share their ideas Group 5 –Balitaw
about the words. Group 6 –Pandanggo

Analysis What word is formed out from each scrambled letters/ Possible Answers: Harana, Polka, Balitaw
Kundiman, Kumintang, Pandanggo
What can you say about the words? It’s about song and dance, Ma’am.

Abstraction Now let’s discuss the different classification of secular


music of Luzon,vocal form.

In what way did a man court a lady during our Ma’am,they were courting a lady through
grandmother and grandfather’s generation? serenading or what we call harana.

A serenade traditionally sung a man to express affection
to a woman.
Sang with emotion and usually accompanied by a guitar.
Some popular Filipino harana songs are “ Ang Tangi Kung
Pag-ibig, “and O Ilaw”.
In duple or quadruple meter .

Kumintang ( Play a short Video clip) “Mutya ng Pasig”


Originated from Balayan, Batangas.
In triple meter with themes of love and courtship.
In 1926, when Pasig became the venue of carnival
performances , Nicanor Abelardo was the “ Mutya ng
Pasig “ in kumintang tempo.
The mutya expresses her feelings under the light of the
moon, she is mourning the loss of her love,which
symbolizes the country’s loss of freedom.

POLKA (Play short audio clip)


Originated from a Bohemian dance that became popular
in Europe and America in the early 19th Century.
It was performed in elegant evening gatherings at the
height of its popularity during the period.
The Tempo is in quick duple meter while the melody is
supported by the chords/harmonies of tonic(I) ,dominant
(V) and sub-dominant (IV)
Some Philippine folksongs that were in Polka rhythm like
Pamulinawen, Magtanim ay di Biro at Leron-Leron Sinta.

KUNDIMAN (Play short audio clip)


Came from the words “ kung hindi man”
Its melody , lyrics and expressive singing.
The Kundiman conveys a selfless and spiritual attitude,
intense love ,longing, caring, devotion, and oneness not
only with a romantic partner, but also with a parent, child
a spiritual figure, or the mother land.
What is the relevance of music in their society? It’s the way they sing the song and how it
feels.
Balitaw (Play short audio clip)
A dialogue or courtship song in triple meter, mostly in 2
and 3 part forms and arranged, eaxamples are “Sa Libis ng
Nayon,” “Bakya mo Neneng,” composed by Santiago
Suarez and “ Arimunding –munding,” composed by
Severino Reyes.

PANDANGGO
A dance form that can be found in the different islands of
Luzon such as Batanes, Ilocos, tarlac, and parts of the
Visayas.
A variation of the Spanish word Fandango.
Became popular in the 19th century among the elite of
Manila.
A form of entertainment in the Tagalog region called
Pandangguhan is performed during social celebrations.
A courtship dance but it can also refer to a type of song to
entertain the farmers in the rice field.
The singers of this folk song are called pandanggeras.,
