MATH - (2ND - COT) - Commutative Property

This lesson plan aims to teach students the commutative property of multiplication using various activities. It begins with a review of multiplication facts and introduces real objects to motivate learning. Students will then write multiplication sentences for sets of objects and analyze the factors and products. Different groups of students will complete matching, fill-in-the-blank and other exercises applying the commutative property. Finally, students will demonstrate their understanding through an assessment with multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank questions. The lesson emphasizes accurate use of the commutative property of multiplication.

Demonstration Lesson Plan in Mathematics 3 K to 12

I. Objective: Apply the commutative property of multiplication

II. Prerequisite Concepts and Skills

Multiplication table 1 to 10

Materials: Flashcards, charts of multiplication sentences

References: K to 12 Grade 3 Curriculum Guide, LM Math 3 pages 132-138

TG Math 3 pages 128-130
Value Focus: Accuracy

III. Instructional Procedure

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Drill
Use flash cards of basic multiplication facts

2. Review
Game: “Who am I”?

3. Motivation
Show real objects (tomato)

B. Developmental Activities
1. Presenting the lesson
Let the pupils look the illustration. Have them study the given data. Ask pupils to write the
multiplication sentence for each set of objects.

Multiplication sentence: _____________

Multiplication sentence: _____________

2. Analysis
 If you were to put a relation symbol in between the two number sentences, what would
that be: <, >, or =? Why?
 How did you determine the pairs of multiplication facts?
 Why did you say that the numbers are in pairs?
 What did you notice about the factors?
 How about the product?
3. Performing the Activities

Match column A with column B.

A B
_____1. 3 X 4 a. 3 X 8
_____2. 5 X 6 b. 2 X 6
_____3. 6 X 2 c. 7 X 9
_____4. 8 X 3 d. 4 X 3
_____5. 9 X 7 e. 6 X 5

4. Abstraction
What is the commutative property of multiplication?
How do we apply the commutative property of multiplication?
The Commutative property of multiplication states that the order of the given factors
does not affect the product or changing the order of the factors does not change the product.

5. Application
Group Activity
Group 1: “Fill Me”
Direction: Give the missing factor in the blank.
1. 7 x 4 = ____ x 7
2. 2 x ____ = 5 x 2
3. 6 x 3 = 3 x ____
4. 8 x ___= 4 x 8
5. ___ x 9 = 9 x 7

Group 2: Mix and Match

Direction: Match the pair of multiplication sentence using the commutative property
of multiplication.

5x6 5x9 7x2 9x1

1x9 3x8 8x3

2x7 9x5 6x5

Group 3: Multiplication Sentence

Direction: Write the multiplication sentence for each set of objects.
1.

__________________ = ___________________

2.
_______________________ = _______________________

3.

_______________________ = ________________________

4.

______________________ = ________________________

5.

_____________________ = ______________________

Group 4: “Complete Me”

Direction: Complete the multiplication sentence in each number using the commutative
property of multiplication.

1. 3 X 4 = 4 X
2. 4 X9 = X 4
3. 1 X4 = 4 X
4. X3=3 X 8
5. 6 X =7X6

IV. Assessment
Direction: Choose the letter of the correct answer inside the box.
1. 2 X 4 = _____
a. 7 X 6
2. 5 X 9 = _____
b. 6 X 8
3. 6 X 7 = _____
c. 8 X 9
4. 8 X 6 = _____
5. 9 X 8 = _____ d. 4 X 2
e. 9 X 5
f. 7 X 3

V. Agreement
Direction: Give the multiplication sentence using the commutative property of multiplication.
1. 5 X 8 = X = ______
2. 6 X 7 = X 6 = _______
3. 7 X 9 = 9 X = _______
4. X 6 = 6 X 4 = ______
5. 3 X = 9 X 3 = _____
