INTRODUCTION
We all love pets, besides animals are creatures that brings so many people happiness every
single day. They are loving, compassionate and a friend to all people. Why do our pets makes us
so happy, not to mention people who dislikes pet. Why do those of us voluntarily add to the
responsibilities and expenses that crowd our already hectic lives. Why is it that even through we
know all the work and of watching our pets grow old, even though we know we will someday
lose them altogether, why, then, do we still regard the prospect of sharing our homes with cats
or dogs (or what you have). Its a question that well examine from different angles ever the
course of writing this research studies have found that people who have pet have healthier
hearts, stay home sick of less often, make fewer visits to the doctor, get more exercise, and are
less depressed.Pets may also have a significant impact on allergies, basthma, social support and
social interaction with the people.
Method
In this research, we will unluck new discoveries in this area of study which enables you to create better
understanding of our topic we will use qualitative research because we gather data about live
experience, emotions and behaviors and the meanings individuals attach to them. It assist in enabling us
to gain better understanding in our chosen topic. Our tools are surveys and questionaires, interviews and
life stories. Also, qualitative research because we gather data in numerical form such as statistics and
percentage to make our research more effective and sabotable

What is a PET? In dictionary, a pet is a domestic or tamed animals kept for
companionship or pleasure. In Merriam Webster a pampered and usually a spoiled child or
animal. Base on the given definitions, a pet is our companion which gives us pleasure. We
took care of it, hands our responsibilities to give suitable and needed care and home for
them.
How to take care of them? In Dogmal.com they suggested tips that we
consider on how to care of a pet.
Pets include cats and dogs, birds, etc. Having pets at home is a great hobby for many
people. Having pets at home has lots of good benefits. They provide a very good
entertainment for us. Pets are best friends and constant companion.
Before bringing a pets into your family it is important to know how to take care of it. So we
will be discussing about how to take care of it. Caring for a pet, is like caring for a child.
Now that you have brought your new found friend home, it's time for the fun part and the
hardest part. This is your chance to prove to your parents, yourself, to your pet that you're a
responsible guardian. It largely depends on YOU. It is our duty to take care of our pets.
To minimize boredom, provide your pet with sufficient companionship and a stimulating
environment Provide appropriate housing and location for your pet Teach your family,
friends and children how to interact with your pet Find suitable boarding facilities for
your pet whilst on holidays.
1. ) FOOD
Feed your pet a high quality Foods First of all, we discuss food because a food is very
important to take care of pets. So it is necessary to give your pet a food according to
size, age, and requirement. Feeding a higher quality food leads to a longer and
healthier life for most pets. Higher quality foods contain meat. The best of the high
quality or premium foods contain ingredients, all natural Omega 3 & Omega 6 fatty
acids, and human-grade so you must be feed healthy and high-quality food for your
lovely pets.
Foods not fit for pets A bad diet can affect your pet’s health, energy and outlook on life.
2.) Alcohol
Under no circumstances should not give your pet any alcohol. If you suspect that your
pet has ingested alcohol, contact your veterinarian or the Animal Poison Control Center
immediately. Even drinking a small amount of alcohol can result in significant
intoxication for a dog, which can lead to vomiting, seizures and even death. So don’t
feed alcohol to your lovely pets because it’s very dangerous for everyone. This is a
good idea to take care of pets.
4.) Water
A balanced diet is not the only necessary part of keeping your pets
healthy. Water for drinking is also a very important part of your pet
daily requirements and overall nutrition. The body of every pet in need
of 80 percent water. Water is a most useful part of the take care of
pets so the water should be changed at least twice a day. Your pets
are fish or turtle in the drinking water of the animal, so the tank should
be cleaned at least once a week. Pets must the bath to clean water.
Pets should be given the clean and cold water And should furnish
water from time to time. Add flavor and electrolytes to the water. Break
Out the Broth: If your dog is refusing to drink water, offer him some
chicken or beef broth. Gradually add plain water to the mixture.
5.) Exercise
is beneficial to human health. Similarly, exercises are very useful for
any pet. Physical activity keeps them healthy, happy, and fit. You walk,
run, hike, or play along fetch with your dog each day. Not only is
exercise good for your pup, but it’s good for you. By the toy, you can
give your pet a good exercise because a toy is a very useful idea for
pet health. If you have adopted any pet, so it’s going to take a 10 – 15
minute walk a day is a good exercise. Which helps in keeping your
animal healthy.
Health care is very useful for taking care of pets. Take care of the
health of domestic animals is important. As you need to check with the
doctor and the dentist annually, more regular inspections of pets, is
also required. If you treat your pets Physician or veterinarian can also
attach. If you bring a new dog or cat at home, then, Take care of his
health is very important.
Love and affection are useful for every pet. If you give a love and
affection to your pet than the pets will love you back. Your pet will be a
member of your family, So Give lots of love and affection for your pets.
Train a pet with positive reinforcement, never cruelty or abuse. Keep
your pet and its environment clean. If you have a small animal, clean
their cage weekly. Give your pet plenty of hugs, kisses, gentle pats,
and love. Most importantly, spend time with your pet because that
your pets need love and warmth.
8.) Allergies
9.) Vaccinations
Like people, pets need vaccines. Vaccinating your pet has long been
considered one of the easiest ways to help him live a long, healthy life.
When puppies are born, they are usually protected from infections by
their mother’s milk but need regular vaccinations from an early age.
Puppies are typically vaccinated at eight and 10 weeks, Your young
pet should then be given a booster 12 months after their first
vaccination because it’s very useful to take care of pets.
Vaccines against infectious diseases
Dog: –Canine distemper virus Leptospirosis canine hepatitis.
Rabbits: – Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease
Myxomatosis
Cats: – Feline herpes virus
Feline infectious enteritis
Feline calicivirus
Pets also carry certain bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi that can
cause illness, these diseases can affect humans in many ways. Avoid
kissing or touching your pet with your mouth because infections can
spread through saliva. Also, don’t share food with your pet. Bacteria
and dirt can ill from a pet, so it is necessary to keep the place clean
stay of pets. Bacteria-free environment hygienic environment is also
required for pets. It is counseled that you just use a selected quite
cleaner so as to scrub your house as pets won’t react well to different
cleaners. If possible, ask the vet to give you one which is suitable for
both your family and your pet.
However, pets can sometimes carry harmful germs that can make us sick even when the pet
appears healthy. The diseases people get from animals are called zoonotic (zoe-oh-NOT-ic)
diseases. Below are some tips to help you and your family stay healthy while enjoying pets.
Before adopting a new pet, make sure that it is the right one for you and your family. Do some
research beforehand about the specific needs of the animal. Ask yourself these questions before
getting a pet:
Children 5 years of age and younger, people with weakened immune systems, and people 65
years of age and older are more likely to get diseases spread between animals and people
(also known as zoonotic diseases). Pregnant women are also at a higher risk for certain
animal-related diseases. Before getting a new pet, keep the following in mind: Households with
children 5 years of age and younger should not have pet reptiles (turtles, lizards, snakes),
amphibians (frogs, toads), or backyard poultry because of the risk of serious illness from
harmful germs spread between these animals and young children. People with weakened
immune systems should take extra precautions when choosing and handling pets. Talk to your
veterinarian for help picking the best pet.
Pregnant women should avoid adopting a new cat or handling stray
cats, especially kittens. Cats can carry a parasite that causes
toxoplasmosis—a disease that can cause birth defects. If you are
pregnant, you do not need to give up your current cat, but you should
avoid changing cat litter. Pregnant women should avoid contact with
pet rodents to prevent exposure to lymphocytic choriomeningitis
virus, which can cause birth defects. If you’re pregnant and have a
pet rodent, avoid direct contact and have someone else clean its
habitat.
Wash Your Hands - Whether you are playing with, feeding, or cleaning up after your pet, it is
important to wash your hands to help reduce the risk of getting sick from germs pets can carry. If
you or a family member are concerned about illness, talk to a doctor and mention the animals
you’ve had contact with recently.
wash hands:
After touching or playing with your pet
After feeding your pet or handling pet food
After handling pet habitats or equipment (cages, tanks, toys, food and water dishes, etc.)
After cleaning up after pets
After leaving areas where animals live (coops, barns, stalls,
etc.), even if you did not touch an animal
Before eating and drinking
Before preparing food or drinks
After removing soiled clothes or shoes
Running water and soap are best for hand washing, but you can use
hand sanitizer until running water and soap are available. Adults should always assist young
children with hand washing.
Keep Your Pet Healthy - Whether you have a dog, cat, horse, parakeet, gerbil, bearded dragon,
or other fun pet, providing regular, life-long veterinary care is important for keeping your pet and
family healthy. Regular veterinary visits are essential to good pet health. Talk to your pet’s
veterinarian about how to keep your pet healthy. Provide your pet with a good diet, fresh water,
clean bedding, and plenty of exercise. Keep up
with your pet’s vaccines, deworming, and flea and
tick control. Some pets can carry ticks that can
spread serious diseases like Lyme disease and
Rocky Mountain spotted fever to people. In areas
with plague—including some rural areas in the
western US—fleas can be a risk to both animals
and their owners.By keeping your pet healthy, you
help to keep yourself and your family healthy.
Contact your veterinarian if you have any
questions about your pet’s health or if you think
your pet may be sick.
Teach Children -How to Interact with Animals - Pets can teach children compassion and
responsibility. However, children 5 years of age and younger should be supervised while interacting
with animals to ensure the safety of the child and the pet. Teach children to wash their hands right
after playing with animals or anything in the animals’ environment (cages, beds, food or water
dishes). Don’t let children kiss pets or put their hands or other objects in their mouths after
handling animals.
Keep Wildlife Wild - Although they may look cute and cuddly, avoid touching wild animals to
reduce the risk of illness and injury. Don’t encourage wild animals such as raccoons, prairie dogs,
or wild rodents to come into your home by feeding them. You might find a young animal that
appears to be abandoned and want to rescue it, but often its parent is close by. If you are
concerned about the safety of a wild animal, contact a local wildlife rehabilitation facility
There are many benefits to owning a pet. Pets teach children valuable life lessons like
responsibility, trust, compassion, respect and patience. While pets offer a lot of benefits to kids,
kids also have a lot to offer the pet in your family as well. Both kids and pets enjoy high energy play
as well as having a cuddle buddy during nap time.
If your child asks for a pet, talk with them about responsibility and the permanency of owning a
pet. When the “newness” wears off or the puppy/kitten gets older, will they still want to care for the
animal? Have they expressed a consistent desire for a pet and understand it will need daily care up
and above play time?
Set up and discuss what your child’s pet responsibilities will be ahead of time. Remember, no
matter how committed they are at the time of getting a pet, you will have to consider yourself as
the backup plan if and when they cannot or will not continue to care for the pet.
One of the major reasons, and an important life skill, for owning a pet is to teach responsibility.
Pets require food, water and love. Many, some more than others, require exercise. They also
require grooming (brushing develops large muscles of the arm) and bathroom time (walking the
dog develops large muscles of your child’s legs and is good for the development of their heart,
brain and lungs).
Children over 5 years old can have developmentally appropriate responsibilities in regards
to the care of the pet. Children under the age of 4 should be monitored with pets at all
times, and children under the age of 10 should not be expected to take care of a dog or cat
completely on their own.
A second skill children learn is trust. A pet offers unconditional support when a child (or
anyone) is sad, angry or upset. They can teach your child to trust the pet, themselves and
build trust in other relationships as well.
Compassion is the third life skill developed. When a child takes care of a pet, they learn to
be kind to others through taking care of their furry friend’s basic needs.
Bereavement. When a pet passes away, a child will learn about the grieving process.
Respect. Requiring gentle touching and learning about boundaries when the pet is eating
and sleeping will develop respect for others in young children, which is a difficult skill to
learn at a young age.
Self-esteem. When pets show unconditional love, it boosts a child’s self-esteem. Being
responsible also develops self-esteem in young children.
Loyalty. Pets are very loyal and a good example of how to treat others that are important to
the child and family.
Physical activity. Walking and throwing a ball is great exercise.
Patience. Sometimes bonding with a pet takes time, as well as teaching tricks and learning
good behavior.
Social Skills. Pets are great in helping “break the ice.” On outings, dogs encourage
conversations with others and will improve a child’s social skills.
Motivation. Because of all the skills pet ownership provides, young children have a reduced
risk of allergies and better grades at school because kids develop internal motivation while
caring for their animals.
Empathy. Children growing up with a pet do so with more empathy towards animals and
more empathy in general.
Research shows children who live in homes with a dog can possibly have fewer ear infections and
respiratory tract infections and require fewer antibiotics, perhaps because the exposure to animals
at a young age stimulates the immune system. Research found in the Time article, “Why Dogs and
Cats Make Babies Healthier,” indicates that exposure to pet dander could prime babies’ still-
developing immune systems and be able to fend off common allergens and bugs. Young children’s
immune systems are more capable of facing them. Kids with a dog did better than those with a cat.
"When thinking of which pet to add to your family, pick one that fits your lifestyle. A
fish, turtle or hamster will require less playtime than a cat or dog. If your family
travels a lot, then maybe an animal that can be left at home with minimal care
would be a good choice. If you prefer to go for long walks and play in the yard, then
a dog may be a perfect fit. "
Pets are good for your health, and we have the studies to prove it
(SIDNEY STEVENS December 20, 2019)
If you have pets you already know the joy and love they bring to your life. Now science is
confirming just how good they really are for you — both mentally and physically.
How do they help? One theory is that pets boost our oxytocin levels. Also known as the "bonding
hormone" or "cuddle chemical," oxytocin enhances social skills, decreases blood pressure and
heart rate, boosts immune function and raises tolerance for pain. It also lowers stress, anger and
depression.
No surprise then that keeping regular company with a dog or cat (or another beloved beast)
appears to offer all these same benefits and more. Read on to discover the many impressive ways
a pet can make you healthier, happier and more resilient.
Having a dog is associated with a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease or other causes,
according to a study that followed 3.4 million people in Sweden. Researchers studied men and
women between the ages of 40 and 80 and followed their health records (and whether they owned
a dog) for about a dozen years. The study found that for people who lived alone, owning a dog can
decrease their risk of death by 33% and their risk of cardiovascular-related death by 36%, compared
to single people without a pet. Chances of having a heart attack were also 11% lower. A 2019
review of nearly 70 years of research found that dog ownership lowers your risk of dying from any
cause by 24%. For people who've already had a stroke or heart attack, their risk drops by 31% when
they have a dog. The results were published in Circulation, the journal of the American Heart
Association.
You'd think that having pets might trigger allergies by kicking up sneeze-and-wheeze-inducing
dander and fur. But it turns out that living with a dog or cat during the first year of life not only cuts
your chances of having pet allergies in childhood and later on but also lowers your risk of asthma.
A study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology found that newborns who live
with cats have a lower risk of childhood asthma, pneumonia and bronchiolitis.
Living with a pet as a child also revs up your immune system. In fact, just a brief pet encounter can
invigorate your disease-defense system. In one study, petting a dog for only 18 minutes raised
immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels in college students' saliva, a sign of robust immune function.
even some new research that suggests links between the microbes pets bring into our home and
the beneficial ones that live in our digestive tract. “Exposure to animal bacteria may trigger
bacteria in our gut to change how they metabolize the neurotransmitters that have an impact on
mood and other mental functions," Jack Gilbert, the director of the Microbiome Center at the
University of Chicago, told The New York Times. Gilbert is coauthor of a study published in The
New England Journal of Medicine that found Amish children have lower rates of asthma because
they grow up with livestock and the bacteria they host. Gilbert cautions that studies about how pet
microbes might affect human gut bacteria is still in early stages.
This one applies more to dog owners. If you like walking with your favorite canine,
chances are you're fitter and trimmer than your non-dog-walking counterparts and
come closer to meeting recommended physical activity levels. One National
Institutes of Health-funded study of more than 2,000 adults found that regular dog
walkers got more exercise and were less likely to be obese than those who didn't
walk a dog. In another study, older dog walkers (ages 71-82) walked faster and
longer than non-pooch-walkers, plus they were more mobile at home.
When stress comes your way, your body goes into fight-or-flight mode, releasing
hormones like cortisol to crank out more energy-boosting blood sugar and
epinephrine to get your heart and blood pumping. All well and good for our ancestors
who needed quick bursts of speed to dodge predatory saber-toothed tigers and
stampeding mastodons. But when we live in a constant state of fight-or-flight from
ongoing stress at work and the frenetic pace of modern life, these physical changes
take their toll on our bodies, including raising our risk of heart disease and other
dangerous conditions. Contact with pets seem to counteract this stress response by
lowering stress hormones and heart rate. They also lower anxiety and fear levels
(psychological responses to stress) and elevate feelings of calmness. Studies have
found that dogs can help ease stress and loneliness for seniors, as well as help calm
pre-exam stress for college students. One study found that just 10 minutes of
petting a dog or cat can lower cortisol levels in college students.
Pets shower us with love so it's not surprising they have a big impact on our love
organ: the heart. Turns out time spent with a cherished critter is linked to better
cardiovascular health, possibly due to the stress-busting effect mentioned above.
Studies show that dog owners have a lower risk of heart disease, including lower
blood pressure and cholesterol. Dogs also benefit patients who already have
cardiovascular disease. They're not only four time more likely to be alive after a year
if they own a dog, but they're also more likely to survive a heart attack. And don't
worry, cat owners — feline affection confers a similar effect. One 10-year study
published in Archives of Internal Medicine found that current and former cat owners
were 40% less likely to suffer a heart attack and 30% less likely to die of other
cardiovascular diseases. Another new study that followed more than 1,700 people in
the Czech Republic found that dog owners are more likely to have better overall heart
health. Pet owners in the study reported more physical activity, better diet and ideal
blood sugar levels, but dog owners showed the greatest benefits from having a pet.
Just as non-human pals strengthen our social skills and connection, cats and dogs
also offer furry, friendly comfort and social bonding to people suffering from
Alzheimer's and other forms of brain-destroying dementia. Several canine caregiver
programs now exist to assist at-home dementia patients with day-to-day tasks, such
as fetching medication, reminding them to eat and guiding them home if they've
wandered off course. Many assisted-living facilities also keep resident pets or offer
therapy animal visits to support and stimulate patients. Studies show creature
companions can reduce behavioral issues among dementia patients by boosting
their moods and raising their nutritional intake.
One in nearly 70 American kids has autism (also known as autism spectrum disorder,
or ASD), a developmental disability that makes it tough to communicate and interact
socially. Not surprisingly, animals can also help these kids connect better to others.
One study found that youngsters with ASD talked and laughed more, whined and
cried less and were more social with peers when guinea pigs were present. A
multitude of ASD animal-assisted therapy programs have sprung up in recent years,
featuring everything from dogs and dolphins to alpacas, horses and even chickens.
People haunted by trauma like combat, assault and natural disasters are particularly
vulnerable to a mental health condition called post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Sure enough, studies show that the unconditional love — and oxytocin boost — of a
pet can help remedy the flashbacks, emotional numbness and angry outbursts linked
to PTSD. Even better, there are now several programs that pair specially trained
service dogs and cats with veterans suffering from PTSD.
Millions live with chronic pain, but animals can soothe some of it away. In one study,
34% of patients with the pain disorder fibromyalgia reported pain relief (and a better
mood and less fatigue) after visiting for 10-15 minutes with a therapy dog compared
to only 4% of patients who just sat in a waiting room. In another study, those who
had undergone total joint replacement surgery needed 28% less pain medication
after daily visits from a therapy dog than those who got no canine contact.
Being around a dog at an early age may lessen the chance of developing
schizophrenia as an adult, according to new research from Johns Hopkins
University. In the study, researchers looked at the relationship between exposure to a
family dog or cat during the first 12 years of life and a later diagnosis of
schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. They found that being around a dog lowered the
risk of developing schizophrenia but had no impact on bipolar disorder. They saw no
immediate relationship between cats and either disorder. The researchers caution
that more studies need to be done to confirm their findings.
ABOUT THE DISADVANTAGES OF HAVING PETS
It's not unusual to become so enamored with the idea of having a pet that the
realities of the responsibility are left behind. To be sure, having a dog is an incentive
to get some exercise, and there's nothing like coming home to a pet who's happy to
see you, especially after a long day. It's important to remember that pets are a
lifetime proposition, living beings that rely on you for their survival. Responsible pet
ownership requires acknowledging the disadvantages of having a pet and
recognizing if you can overcome them or if it's better to wait.
Financial Commitment
Pet ownership is not cheap. When you take on a pet, you are adding another family
member and all that entails, including food and medical care. Dogs and cats require
vaccinations, spaying and neutering and parasite prevention.Consider that pets can
get sick, causing unplanned medical expenses to add more costs to keeping a pet.
As pets age, they are prone to developing medical conditions requiring additional vet
visits, testing, medications and medical procedures, which can add up to
considerable expense.
Time Commitment
Pets take time, even if it's a pet you won't socially engage with, such as a fish. The
word "housebroken" doesn't mean the pet cleans up after himself; it means he
understands the appropriate place to take care of business. A dog still needs to be
walked and cleaned up after; a cat needs her litter box cleaned and changed; and
small animals, such as hamsters, require regular housekeeping. In fact, small
animals require additional care because their living spaces need regular cleaning
and maintenance, such as removing all bedding and washing the cage. Fish tanks
require regular water changes and water-quality monitoring to ensure fish live in a
safe, healthy environment.
Beyond basic feeding and toileting duties, pets require engagement. Dogs
require basic obedience training so they will be well-behaved family members.
Pets such as dogs and cats are social creatures, often thriving when they have
the companionship of other people and animals. Some breeds of dogs and
cats are more independent than others, meaning they cope better with the
extended absence of their owners. The American Veterinary Medical
Association states that proper exercise and mental stimulation, appropriate to
the pet's breed, age and health, are important facets of responsible pet
ownership.
Tips
Pet ownership is a lifetime commitment, potentially lasting years or
decades, depending on the pet. Responsible pet owners have an alternative
care plan in place to ensure their pets are cared for in the event of
emergencies or significant life changes.
Pet Planning
Having a pet requires thinking ahead. If you leave town, you must have a someone
tasked with caring for your pet in your absence. It may be someone who stops in to
feed your fish or it may entail boarding your dog at a kennel. If you hope to expand
your family with a spouse and children one day, your pet needs to be factored into
those plans, as growing families often impact time and flexibility. Pets also have to
be factored into emergency plans, such as evacuation routines during hurricane
season.
Social Consequences
Most people have neighbors, whether they're on top, on either side, or both. You
should consider whether a new pet will impact your neighbors' quality of life. For
example, a dog left alone all day may bark and disturb people. Cats and dogs left to
wander outside can cause damage to other peoples' gardens and homes, as well as
leave messes behind.
Saying Goodbye
For anyone who has known and loved a pet, the greatest disadvantage of pet
ownership is saying goodbye. Most people outlive their pets, and watching a
treasured family member decline with age and illness is tough. Whether a pet
becomes sick and dies or you make the decision to humanely euthanize your pet, a
pet's death can be a painful, difficult experience.
Discussion and conclusion
After our research was conducted, hypothesized, and reviewed we come up into a
realization that having a pet do actually has a huge impact in our living. It is not just
owning a pet, but living with responsibliies as a owner of a pet. Pet do helps us in
any aspects of our life and indeed pets makes us happy, they love us more than they
could ever love theirselves. Pets are not just an animal but an animal being with
feelings that deserve to be cared and to love. As what Biblically written says that we
are given the authority to manage every being living here in the earth.
We therefore conclude that owning a pet is a great choice. It has its advantage and
disadvantages, they are a friend, a buddy, and a true love.
