Task: Part 2 Long Turn Here’s this week’s Part 2 task Topic vocabulary Describe an advert you once saw that was very effective. You should say advertising agency - where this advert appeared advertising budget brand awareness - when you saw it brand loyalty - what it was advertising buy and sell and say why you thought it was so effective. call to action celebrity endorsement 1. Find the vocabulary you need classified ads Look through the vocabulary on the left and decide which expressions to cold call could be used in your talk. If necessary, use the vocabulary listed to help commercial break commercial channel you come up with ideas for your talk. to go viral junk mail 2. Task focus: generating ideas to launch a product To help yourself come up with ideas for a talk like this, experiment by mailing list asking yourself lots of questions beginning ‘Do/Did …?’, ‘Is/Are/Were …?’, mass media niche product ‘What …?’, ‘Where …?’, ‘Why …?’ etc. to place an advert For example: press release What kind of advert was it? (TV, Radio, Newspaper, Magazine, Poster) prime time Who was it aimed at? (younger/older people, men/women, product placement Who featured in the advert, if it was a video/TV ad? sales page to show adverts Did the advert follow a familiar format for the product or service being social media advertised? spam email Where was the advert set? target audience What happened in the advert? word of mouth Did it have a surprise element?

Make your long turn Record yourself trying the long turn. Listen back and pay attention to your timing and how close you were to talking for two minutes. If you find that you spoke for significantly less than two minutes go back to the task focus activity and try generating more ideas and try again.

Work with other students and discuss the following questions: • What is it that makes an advert effective? Listen to the students who have recorded themselves trying • What are the advantages to companies of advertising on the Internet these tasks.
