Resort scenario in Nepal: the concept of resorts originated in Nepal along with the
promotion of the tourism development. Resorts in Nepal have come a long way in a short
period of time. Nepal owes many resorts of different types. Despite the resorts sites of
Nepal are not of International lines, they more often cater to specific themes such as
Mountain viewing, Wildlife safaris, Village resorts and scenic panoramas. Resort literally
means a place whose purpose is to provide visitors recreation and relaxation. Today, more
function has been added to its utility like outdoors sports, conference and exhibitions, a
venue for physical fitness, hospitality units such as guest rooms and cottages etc. Most of
the resorts are also influenced of nearby ethnic culture and architecture. The price of basic
amenities such as food, lodging and services available vary with the range of the local
resorts. Resort cannot be built in urban areas, there should be some special feature on the
location or on remote area with scenic view, in context of Nepal too has required some
specific location. Resort is concerned more in informal activities than formal. The services
system in resort should be efficient and sophisticated and the entire area should be planned
in aesthetic way. Resorts in Nepal are being popular as a good business enterprise. On one
hand, this business is helping in improvement of economy level of the whole country and
the people of the same area. And on the hand our traditional culture, skills architectural
heritage, and spirit are being conserved, making the people close to the nature. Seeing
present need resort should also cater all types of people, national and international tourist
and the locals.
Year 2018 seems remarkable improvement in tourist arrivals. Tourist arrivals increased by
25 percent compared to 2017. Out of total tourist arrivals, five countries occupy almost 50
percent. The proportion of tourists from these countries are; India (16.57%), China (13.1%),
USA (7.83%), Srilanka (5.94%) and United Kingdom (5.41%) respectively. Similar seasonality
exists in tourist arrivals as in previous year. The highest number of arrivals is observed in
November followed by March. There is no major change in sex and age group of tourist
arrivals. By sex male (53.3%) and about highest percentage of arrivals were of age category
31-45 (30.7%) in year 2018.

Tourism in Nepal:
Tourism is the largest industry in Nepal, and the largest source of foreign
exchange and revenue. Possessing 8 of the 10 highest mountains in the world,
Nepal is a hotspot destination for mountaineers, rock climbers and people
seeking adventures. Nepal is the country where Mount Everest, the highest
mountain peak in the world, is located. Mountaineering and other types of
adventure tourism and ecotourism are important attractions for visitors. The
government of Nepal declared 2011 to be Nepal Tourism Year, and hoped to
attract one million foreign tourists to the country during that year. The tourist
industry is seen as a way to alleviate poverty and achieve greater social equity in
the country. The world heritage Lumbini, birthplace of Gautama Buddha, is
located in southern Nepal, and there are other important religious pilgrimage
sites throughout the country. The government of Nepal has also declared Lumbini
Tourism Year 2012 to promote Lumbini - the birthplace of Lord Buddha

According to Nepal's Ministry of Tourism, major tourist activities include

wilderness and adventure activities. Some of major tourism attractions are:

Major tourist activities:

1.Mountain Climbing:

The 800 km stretch of Nepal Himalayan is the greatest in the world with eight
peaks that rise above 8000m including the highest in the world, Mt. Everest. Ever
since the country opened its peaks to climbers in 1994, the Nepal Himalayas has
become the great theatre of mountaineering activities that provides impetus to
thousands of men and women to meet the ultimate challenges.
2.Trekking
The best way to experience Nepal’s unbeatable combination of natural beauty and
culture riches is to walk through them. One can walk along the beaten trials or
virgin tracks, making it an experience for a life time. Along with forests of
Rhododendron, isolated hamlets and small mountain villages, birds, animals,
monasteries and breathtaking landscapes, one will encounter friendly people of
different cultures offering a fascinating glimpse of traditional rural life.

3. Bird watching
Nepal is a paradise for bird lovers with over 646 species (almost 8% of the world
total) of birds, and among them almost 500 hundred species are found in
Kathmandu Valley alone. The most popular bird watching spots in Kathmandu are
Phulchoki, Godavari, Nagarjun, Bagmati river, Taudaha and so on. Get your
binoculars and look forward to a rewarding experience.
4.Paragliding
Paragliding in Nepal can be a truly wonderful and fulfilling experience for the
adventure seeking. A trip will take you over some of the best scenery on earth, as
you share airspace with Himalayan griffins‟ vultures, eagles, kites and float over
villages, monasteries, temples, lakes and jungle, with a fantastic view of the
majestic Himalayas.
5.Rafting/Kayaking/Cannoning
Rafting is one of the best ways to explore the typical cross section of natural as
well as ethno- cultural heritage of the country. There are numerous rivers in Nepal
which offer excellent rafting or cannoning experience. You can glide on calm jade
waters with munificent scenery all about or rush through roaring white rapids, in
the care of expert river-men employed by government authorized agencies. One
can opt for day of river running or more. So far, the government has opened
sections of 10 rivers for commercial rafting. The Trisuli River (Grade 3+) is one of
the most popular of Nepal’s raft able rivers. The Kali Gandaki (5-5+) winds
through remote canyons and deep gorges for five days of intense rapids. The Bhote
Koshi (4-5) is 26km of continuous white water and the raging Marshyanghi is four
days of uninterrupted white water. The Karnali River (4-5) provides some of the
most challenging rapids in the world. The Sun Koshi (4-5), 7km, requiring 8-10
days to complete, is a big and challenging river. Adventurers are provided with
world-class services by rafting agents. Agencies here provide life jackets, camping
and the standard rafting paraphernalia needed by world-class rafting. An extremely
popular sport in Europe, cannoning is now available in Nepal. Cannoning gives
you the freedom to explore some of the most ruggedly beautiful, yet forbidden
places in the world.
6.Bungee Jumping
The ultimate thrill of a bungee jump can now be experienced in Nepal at one of the

Page 5

best sites that this sport can boast of anywhere in the world. Nepal’s first bungee
jumping site is situated 160m, over the Bhote Koshi River, inviting you to
experience the ultimate adrenaline rush in the
7.Jungle Safari
National Parks located specially in the Terai region in Nepal attract visitors from
all over the world. A visit to these parks involves game- stalking by a variety of
means-foot, dugout canoe, jeep, and elephant back. One is bound to sight a one –
horned rhino or two at every elephant safari. Besides the rhinos, wild boars,
samburs, spotted deer, sloth bear, four-horned antelope are also usually seen. A
Royal Bengal tiger may surprise you by his majestic appearance.

3. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

In an addition to the homely comfort, people prefer to enjoy the weekends with and in
nature has physical as well as psychological impact on minds of the people. Traffic
development and industrialization had led to urbanization which had stolen the mental
peace of the human. In this endeavor of man to escape from the urban chaos has created
recreational space to quench his theist for mental peace, relaxation and change of
environment.

AIM:

The aim is to familiarize with designs on sloping sites.

To study a different type of building structures on a hill.

Page 6
Thesis Proposal and Research 31 December 2019

To show the nature and extent of spread and relationship of the built with the sensitive
setting.

The Aim is comprised of possibilities of designs on varying grades and utilizing the
environmentally susceptible setting to its optimum potential.

4. JUSTIFICATION OF THE PROJECT

In present context, tourism in holds a great potential to establish itself as a significant
means of economy. This sector has a great potentiality to generate foreign revenue, which
can bring about immediate socio-economic benefit from small investments. A well-
synchronized and planned resort, which caters the modern amenities as per the
requirement of the visitors, is a present need. We can find many resorts here and only few
of which are fulfilling these needs. In addition, most of the resorts are oriented to limited
service focusing only foreigners and paying very little attention to urban haves. The
multifunctional resorts are still absent in and this proposed resort will be one of the iconic
resorts with all resort facilities which will ultimately promote resort tourism. The fact that, is
still deficient of required hotel rooms comparing to tourist’s inflow, it is said that, the
present number of hotels can only hold up to half a million visitors in a year. The tourist
estimated to visit in tourism year 2011 is far more that the holding capacity of available
accommodation. Thus, if we are really upon the promotion of tourism, we may receive more
than 1 million visitors a year, if not this year then probably the next, so there is still need
of huge numbers of hotels, resorts, lodges, home stays etc. Viewing the present scenario of
the world, the issue of eco-sensitive and sustainable architecture must be raised by the
architects and we as an architect can alter the landscape and built form for which we need
to understand and be responsible for its far-reaching consequences. The future is hard to
predict but some things are certain. There will be rise in urban population in developing
economies and an increase in levels of income. This project will pay its attention towards
the global energy crisis and climate change though it is a worth less effort to give impact in
global scale, but it will certainly create an example and impact locally as there is saying,
think locally, impact globally. This proposed resort could be the masterpiece of all resort
that are functioning today and will approach to give it global identification. The most
important part is socio-economic impact. The society has changed a lot from traditional to

Page 7
Thesis Proposal and Research 31 December 2019

modern and still in the stage of metamorphosis, from modern to postmodern and the
economic influence of tourism in is noteworthy as is has established itself as a prominent
foreign exchange earner. Bhedetar was accessible only by foot, but now the economy has
boosted and people around the country are being pulled there Thus, tourism plays an
important to upgrade local as well as national economy so resort proposed is commercially
acceptable.

we have top three reasons why you should consider going to Bhedetar for vacation this
summer.
1.The Weather : Those people who have been to Bhedetar say that its main attraction is its
weather. You might reach there on a sunny day, but soon the clouds will gather, and the
weather will change. It is a perfect destination for summer. Located at an altitude of around
1,420 metres above sea level, the hill station never experiences heat. That is why people
from UP and Bihar frequent Bhedetar to beat the heat, local say.
2.The hotel: According to Hotel Association of Nepal (HAM) there are over 35 hotels in
Bhedetar. There are 10 more-star hotels that are coming up in the area. HAN’s Bhedetar
chapter, the hotels in Bhedetar can accommodate up to a thousand tourists at a time.
3.The adventure: Bhedetar is not just for a relaxed holiday. The place has something to offer
for thrill seekers as well. Nine km down the trail, there is the Namaste Waterfall, which the
locals also call Simsuwa. You can take a dip in the cold water or go canoeing in the river.
There is also the option of paragliding from Bhedetar to Dharan, one of the biggest cities in
the east.

Purpose of visit:
Bhedetar is found to be visited primarily for recreation and holiday pleasure due to pleasant
weather; these two combine together represent about 80 percent of the total tourists
(Table 1). Under sightseeing activity, magnificent views of the Himalayan peaks and
greenery hills to the north and the Tarai lowland fields to the south can been seen from this
place during clear weather. The businesspersons, government staff, and professionals often
with their families used to visit Bhedetar for holiday. Groups of people representing
different organizations and education institutes from different parts of the country such as
Kathmandu, Pokhara, Hetauda, Birganj, Nepalganj, Dhangadhi, and Mahendranagar used to
visit Bhedetar under the package tour program of the eastern Nepal. There are hotels with
facilities for organising meeting, seminar, training programs, etc and therefore different
agencies including NGOs, INGOs, government and political parties are used to organize
programs in Bhedetar.

Bhedetar is found to be visited by tourists under organized or group tourism; about 77 percent of
the total tourists (13,500) come under this category.
1. Pathibhara Temple:
Pathibhara is a very famous religious shrine both for Hindu and Kirati folks all over the
world. It can be reached within half hour walk from Bhedetar Bazaar. The Pathibhara temple
of Bhedetar is a branch of main Pathibhara temple of Taplejung.
2.Singsuwa (Namaste) Falls
This fall is in the head of Singsuwa stream. Also known as Namaste Jharana, this fall is some
8-kilometer away from Bhedetar Bazaar. This fall is more than 50 meters tall.
3.Bhedetar View Tower (Shailung Danda)
A westen hilltop of Bhedetar Bazaar is called Shailung danda or Charls Point. This hilltop was
climbed the then prince Charles of UK during his visit in this place in 1980s.
4.Bishranti Temple
Bishranti temple is famous for temple and elderly home in East Nepal. Around 50 elderly
citizens are staying in this temple. They are provided with free treatment, food and housing.
Located on the lap of popular rafting river Tamor which originates from the Himalayas, this
temple is good travelling point both on religious and philanthropic grounds. Visitors from
Nepal and India crowd this temple almost all day. Rafters make rafting from this place to
Chatara of Sunsari for 1-day rafting package.
5.Okhre View Tower
Okhre View Tower is located in Sanghurigadhi Rural Municipality-5 of Dhankuta district. This
place can be reached within 6-kilometer road distance from Bhedetar Bazaar to Rajarani.
3. Namje Village
Situated at altitude of 1770 meters above the sea level, Namje village is just 2.5 kilometer
away from Bhedetar Bazaar. This Magar-majority ethnic village has unique Magar culture,
language, ethnic attires and their very famous typical dance called 'Hurra'.

Namje is best place to peep northern Himalayasn peaks including Mt. Everest, Mt.

peaks, this place is best point to glance southern plains of Nepal and its southern borders
with India.

Hilltops of this village are dotted with various transmission towers of Nepal's best FM radios,
televisions and mobile service providers.

This place also contains a place called Aatma Ghar, designed by American architect Travice
Price. Price collected stones from 231 graves of this place and assembled at a place and
made a collective grave. This is described as a 17th wonders of the world. Plus, CNN has
listed this village as a top 12 underreported travelling destination in the world.

Beautiful scenes, hospitable locals and typical Magar culture have decorated this place as a
busy travelling destination. Many travelers from Nepal and India come to visit this place
every day. Construction of hotels and home-stays are on rise in this beautiful tourism place.
5. OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
The main objective of this proposal is to design the hotel resort for the partial fulfillment of
Bachelor Degree of Architecture. Specifically, the objectives are to
 Provide a recreational environment for the resort through varieties of facilities and
functions
 The establishment of tourist resort will create the economic opportunities to site
neighborhood. Also, the local and national economy will boost due to establishment
of multifunctional recreational tourist resort. -
 Create an interactive ground for locals and visitors so that there may be interchange
of ideas and cultural demonstration
 To promote famous trekking route of that particular place
To represent as a unique landmark of the city and tourist attraction place.

6. STUDY AREA
SCOPE AND LIMITATION: The scopes of the projects are, The resort with recreational facilities
posses’ wide range of scope. If we analyze the present trend of internal resort tourism and need of
leisure place, then it is acceptable to have multifunctional resort, which not only focus on overnight
stay but also concern in day services too. For internal visitors, there is no trend of going hotels in
weekend, due to their location on core urban area. They intend to go some distance far from city so
that they can enjoy the environment and freshness there. Hence, hotel resort can provide best
solution to internal tourists. For external tourism, it will function as a luxurious hotel resort
which provides all the facilities within its boundary so as to make their stay pleasing and
exotic. It will help to promote resort tourism in Nepal and encourage foreigner to come here
once just to stay in this very resort. Ultimately, it will enhance tourism sector of country.
Resort can also be a place for convection and conference, and that depends on the quality

Page 10
Thesis Proposal and Research 31 December 2019

of space they provide so that the convection, conference or seminar becomes more
interesting and fascinating. The proposed resort will attempt to provide seminar space to
meet international standard. The resort will be a place to gain knowledge regarding the
green design, as it will applying degraded energy system. The limitations of the projects are,
it will focus more on social survey, research as this is an academic project, and this does not
fall under the primary constraint. The project is concerned in built form so; there will be
limited research and study on feasibility of project and detailed site suitability will not be
analyzed. The project will not focus on structural analysis of built structures of resorts,
although structural consultation will be made and it will not be sufficient. The project will
not cover all the details related to green design incorporated, though research will be made
and required level of detailing will be done to meet the architectural requirement. Detailed
environment assessment will not be done due to limitation of knowledge in this field and it
is not our primary focus, as the project is virtual. However, some impact will be analyzed

Proposed site area

Bhedetar is a village development committee in Dhankuta District in the Koshi Zone of

8. LITERATURE REVIEWS
Introduction to resort:
Resort is a recreational complex which attracts visitors for holidays and vacations. It is
compound of the building which is located in the natural scenic area providing lodgings,
entertainment and relaxing environment to people on vacation. The term resort is
sometimes misused with a hotel that does not provide the other amenities required of a full
resort. However, a hotel is frequently a central feature of a resort. The main difference
between a resort and hotel is its location. Hotels are mostly located in urban areas but
resorts are built away from city areas with one or more natural importance. Natural
importance may be water or forest or mountains or others where many activities like:
sunset, sunrise, jungle safari, hiking, trekking, elephant ride etc. In hotels there are mostly
inner activities going on but resorts give equal importance to things that are performed
outside.

Wikipedia defines “Resort as a place used for relaxation or recreation.” It differs from a
hotel in the sense that where the hotels are mostly located in the urban setting are
designed for a shorter stay, resorts are the set-in rural area, away from the noise of the busy
city and are designed for longer stay. Resorts are also ideal place for holding events,
meeting and conferences. Hence, they should provide facilities that would entertain the
guest for the longer period of time. It would also arrange for the excursions and trekking,
etc. generally resort is located at the area of scenic recreational sites where people spend a
vacation.

Case study This is preparatory phase for thesis project in which data, facts, spatial needs and
requirements are studied focusing on the approved topic. We will study the present
functioning and organization of spaces through case studies. All the findings gathered in this
phase will be applied in our design phase.

Planning Requirement
The front of the house and back of the house should be well planned so that the
activities on back of the house are not witnessed by the guests. For this purpose,
separate space should be provided for the guest and staff.
Back of the house
Two objectives for planning the back of the house are control and efficiency.
Foodstuff, housekeeping supplies and a great many other item must be received
out of sight of the hotel guest. Such receiving is usually done at a loading deck,
which should be covered so that the deliveries are not stolen at the time of
delivery.
The major part of the back of the house is:
 Laundry facilities
 Housekeeping department
 Food and beverage service
 Mechanical and maintenance space
Front of the house
The front of the house comprises every area of that the guest will see. These spaces
must be handled and planned with one thought in mind the convince and continued
approbation of the guest. The major fronts of the house service are:
 Main entrance
 Reception and lobby
 Cashier
 Administration

Page 14
Thesis Proposal and Research 31 December 2019

 Guest rooms
 Restaurant facilities
 Conference hall
 Recreational area
Environment requirement
Resort should be situated on a beautiful natural setting, pollution free environment
and far from the busy city. The vehicular access around the area should be
provided.
Landscape requirement
The landscape design of the resort plays the vital role in the resort design hence it
should be well planned taking account of the natural topography and natural
setting of the site. Sufficient properly designed outdoor space should be provided
which include lush gardens, place to play games, family outing, etc.
Characteristics of good landscape
1. An Invitation to Enjoyment: Entry
 Front gardens and exterior facade create a first impression for resort
visitors
 Landscaping i.e. hard and soft in the front are the most
important parts of a cohesive design
 Reflects the architectural style of the resort and sets the mood
for guests during their stay
2. A Focus on Location
 Built away from city area with one or more natural importance
i.e. water, forest, mountain etc.
 A place where people can boost their intimacy with the nature
3. Escapes with a view
 Mountainous panoramas, tropical seascapes, and stunning
scenery are usually the core of these features
4. Outdoor dining and entertainment
 To allow hotel guests to take advantage of their location is to
integrate food, drinks, and entertainment into the landscape
design.
 Luxurious bars, dining facilities, and even dance floors are often found

Page 15
Thesis Proposal and Research 31 December 2019

outdoors

Functional Relationship
 Separation of the guest and service areas
 No cross circulation: distinction between front and back house
 All catering be on the same level as kitchens and directly related
 Organization of back of house as separate as possible

9. PROPOSED CASE STUDIES

It is essential to know about functioning and spatial management of the resort before
commencing the design works, hence several cases on related topics will be studied.
There are numerous resorts in Nepal. But none of them are likely to meet all the
requirement of the proposed here. Thus, resort will be studied and the related program
will be separately. the following case studied will be performed

articles, journals, reports, bulletins, magazine, discussions with seniors

and teachers, etc.
I. Data collection
The review of literature will help to carry out collection of required data
on various aspects. These data and information will be gathered from
different sources such as field visits, questionnaire survey, literature
study, and different published matters.
II. Project frame working
After gaining required knowledge on project the next step is to make
project framework. According to requirement of my project the
framework is made.
III. Case studies
For the purpose of this thesis, study of malfunction building as well as
buildings with specific functions was conducted. From case study, I
became familiar with interrelationship between different function and the
essence that binds them together, the technical aspects required for the
resort, spaces for various activities such as information centers, health
club, accommodations, etc. The confusion from literature survey was
removed from case studies. For above requirement case studies will be
conducted in following institution:
 Fistali Lodge, Pokhara
 Fulbari Resort, Pokhara
 Grand Norling Resort, Kathmandu
 Kiana Resort, Costarica
IV. Project formulation
The next important step is programmed formulation. Analyzing the
available data/ information and with the help of design standard: spatial
and another requirement is formulated.

VI. Site analysis

Site study is another main step before beginning of any project. It covered

different aspects like social, cultural, religious aspects of society,

geographical features of site, its topography, infrastructure, and climatic
aspects as well as potentially and weakness of the site. Climatic aspects
are prominent during site analysis. So, the climatic situation of Began Lake
was studied in detail.
VII.Conceptual /schematic design
According to requirement and site condition, zoning and conceptual
design was done. Refinement of requirement will be done for further
development of design.

VIII.Design development
Different aspects of architecture are incorporated during design
development. Finalization of design and report writing the last stage is
final design and preparation of report. Incorporating all the suggestion
from thesis supervisor and other teacher the final design is prepared.

11. EXPECTED OUTCOME

General out put
 Positive impact on tourist entrepreneurs
 Employment generation and increase in the life standard of the local people
 Establishment of tourist resort with ample facilities
 Sense of awareness towards sustainability in design
 Exposure of the site to the national level for the provision of better infrastructure

Design out put

 Planning and designing resort with all indoor and outdoor amenities.
 Research in related topic to simplify the problems related to the resort design.
 Use of green technologies and environment sustainable design.
 Final product as complete architectural drawings 3d’s model report and other
supporting materials.
Concept of Planning
As the site for the project is taken near the lakeside, I have taken Ripple effect of Water as the
concept for planning Resort. As a ripple effect produces the flow of wave of water from the
center, the form of the building and the way of functional flow can be seen in similar manner
from the Centre.
