Drilling Fluid Program OBM DRILLING FLUID (one barrel)
Notes:
• Order of addition should be followed with vigorous mixing / shearing to produce a stable
emulsion
• Use 30-50 barrels spacer for displacement to avoid mud contamination. Displacing a light
fluid out of the hole with heavy mud, use normal circulation (heavy mud in through the pipe /
light fluid out through the annulus). Displacing heavy mud out of the hole with light fluid, use
reverse circulation (light fluid in through the annulus / heavy mud out through the pipe).
• Recover & store as much uncontaminated mud volume as possible for repeated usage.
• Electrical stability should be greater than 600 volts and the HPHT filtrate should be all oil.
• Rheological properties should be measured at 150°F.
• Never add CaCO3 when adding water or when free water is present in the filtrate.
• Never mix Invermul and lime simultaneously through the rig hopper.
• Keep water hoses off the rig floor and away from mud tanks. Only the mud engineer should
make water additions.
• Do not use diesel in mud or spacers. Small amounts of diesel will corrupt the Low Toxicity Oil.
Pump sweeps with pipe rotation while circulating bottoms up before tripping and another when back on bottom.
Pipe rotation and reciprocation greatly assist in mechanically disturbing the cuttings on the low side of the well
allowing better cuttings removal.
DO NOT stop circulating until all the pills are out of the hole and the shakers are clean. Do not pump bottoms up
only. You need to keep pumping at the same pump rate while drilling till the hole is clean, not just the bottoms
up.
Weighted sweep:
Isolate a clean volume in the pill tank of OBM drilling fluid used from the active system. Increase
density to 15-30 pcf above the active mud weight or as applicable with safe margin.
- 20 -
Workover No. 1 ZULF-29
Notes
• It is recommended to precede the Weighted Pill by a low viscosity pill in turbulent flow.
• Do not use a high density pill alone if it is likely to cause lost circulation (consider formations,
ECD and fracture gradient).
• Increased pump rates are recommended for pumping weighted sweeps.
• Use fine mesh screen on the shale shakers (120 -170 mesh) to properly discard drilled solids
and maintain clean fluid.
Lo-Vis sweep:
Isolate required amount of a clean volume of the drilling fluid from the active system in the pill tank.
Reduce the viscosity to obtain a minimum YP of 15 to ensure it will have the required suspension
property to avoid settling. If used in conjunction with a Weighted Sweep the density can be lowered to
that equal of the weight increase of the weighted sweep (i.e. 15 – 30 pcf).
Notes:
• Consisting of 20 – 30 bbl (or 300 to 500 feet of open hole volume) followed by a weighted pill.
• The low viscosity pill in turbulent flow will scour cuttings into the main annular flow
path. The weighted pill with its increased buoyancy will help in lifting the disturbed cuttings
out of the hole when they fall out of the low viscosity pill.
• Lo-Vis sweeps are not recommended if there is a potential for hole instability. The turbulent
flow can scour the wall cake off the borehole wall, allowing more fluid to be pushed into the
rock matrix.

Workover No. 1 ZULF-29
HOLE CLEANING RECOMMENDATIONS
1. High Viscosity Pills – Typically used for hole or casing sections with a deviation less than 40°. Not
recommended in highly deviated wells. If used regularly, will increase the Yield Point and low shear
rheology of the active system. Sweep Volume should be greater than 300 feet of annular height in
the largest hole section. Prepare pill to a funnel vis. of 40 – 100 sec/qt over the circulating fluid. For
water base mud use XC polymer at 0.5 – 3 lbs/bbl, depending on mud weight/condition/type. Pilot
test to define treatment guidelines. For oil base mud use VG 69. Pilot test to determine treatment
guidelines for mud in use.
2. High Density Pills – Highly recommended over high viscosity sweeps in deviated and horizontal
wells. Usually mixed at 15 - 30 pcf above circulating system mud weight. The buoyancy effect of the
higher density increases the carrying capacity. This pill alone will have only limited effect in
removing existing cuttings beds in a horizontal wellbore unless it is preceded by a low viscosity
scouring pill in turbulent flow. [Do not use a high density pill alone if it is likely to cause lost
circulation. Consider formations, ECD and fracture gradient.]
3. Tandem Pill – The most effective type of sweep in deviated wells. Consisting of pure base fluid of the
mud (water, oil, or low Vis treated base fluid with filtrate control) calculated to fill an annular
volume of 300 – 500 ft, followed by a weighted pill (weighted to 15 – 30 pcf over the active mud
weight). The 2 pills together can be calculated to balance out at the circulating fluid mud weight
which will cause minimal effect on the hydrostatic of the well. The weighted pill density should be
as high as practical, taking into consideration rig limitations and exposed formations. The pills must
be pumped in transitional or turbulent flow for maximum benefit and to prevent high-side
channeling by the low viscosity pill. Prior to pumping, the effect on the hydrostatic head and the
resultant well bore stability should be carefully examined. The low viscosity pill in turbulent flow
will scour cuttings into the main annular flow path. The weighted pill with its increased buoyancy
will help in lifting the disturbed cuttings out of the hole when they fall out of the low viscosity pill.
4. Pills enhanced with ‘Fibers’ – Fibrous loss circulation materials effectively clean an angled well bore
by ‘lifting’ of the cuttings through mechanical interference with the particles. Sun Sweep should be
used at 0.1 – 0.5 lbs/bbl mixed directly into a pill volume of the active system mud. Concentration
that can be pumped is dependent on the size of circulation ports of any tools in the well. Directional
tools are usually compatible with 0.1 – 0.2 lbs/bbl of Sun Sweep. Discuss the product application
with tool company personnel at the well site prior to pumping.
5. Back reaming – Back reaming should be avoided in high angle holes, but when necessary, needs to
be done carefully with appropriate practices to minimize risks. If excess torque and drag are seen
and it is suspected coming from cuttings beds, back reaming can drag these cuttings up the hole and
pack off the BHA. Always back ream all the way to the shoe or at least to a vertical section to avoid
cuttings bed build-up or slumping. Adequate circulation time incorporated with sweeps should be
performed to ensure the hole is as clean as possible prior to back reaming. It is important to keep
the cuttings above the BHA while back reaming. Prior to racking back each stand, circulate, rotate
and reciprocate the hole clean (3 - 5 bottoms up at 120 – 180 RMP). If while back reaming the pipe
tries to stick or the hole starts to pack off, then attempt to lower the string back down before trying
to deal with the problem. Never pick up. If necessary jar down, not up.
NOTES
• Ensure maximum pump rate and maximum pipe rotation is achieved when pumping any sweep.
If operationally feasible reciprocating the pipe will also help in picking up the cuttings bed while
the pill is flowing across the tandem section.
• Do not shut down the pumps while sweep is in the hole.
- 22 -
Workover No. 1 ZULF-29
• Only have one sweep in the hole at a time (the tandem pill is considered one sweep).
• IMPORTANT!! For hole cleaning and solids suspension in horizontal wells maintain low end
rheology (6 RPM reading) at least 1.2 - 1.5 times the hole diameter, i.e. for an 8 ½” hole 6 RMP
value = 10-13.
• Mud engineer should always monitor returning sweeps and use Sweep Sheet below to track
effectiveness of sweeps and to optimize formulations and frequency required. Keep a trend
chart of sweep effectiveness relative to hook load/torque readings.

Workover No. 1 ZULF-29
1. DEFINITIONS
Release of hydrocarbons from a well while it is being worked over may be planned (and controlled) or
unplanned (and either uncontrolled or temporarily uncontrolled). The following definitions will assist
in distinguishing between these types of hydrocarbon releases.
1.1. Controlled: This is the planned release of hydrocarbons from a well in a controlled manner (i.e.,
rate, flow path, and release to atmosphere are controlled). Examples of a controlled release are:
• Release of drilled or trip gas
• Circulating out a kick
• Flowing the well for clean-up
• Testing a well for flow and content measurement
1.2. Uncontrolled: Temporarily – This is the unplanned, or surprise, flow from the well which may
result in a release of hydrocarbons. When the primary well control method (adequate mud
weight) is insufficient to control the reservoir pressure, the well will begin to flow. As soon as the
flow is detected by the rig sensors or by observation, the Rig Crew takes immediate action
(secondary well control measures) to ensure safety and regain well control. Examples of a release
that are uncontrolled temporarily are:
• An undetected kick reaches surface
• Release of trapped reservoir fluids inside tubular while POOH
Note: - Secondary well control measures will be the activation of the Blowout Prevention
Equipment ( BOPE, Stabbing Valve, Top Drive)
1.3. Uncontrolled: If, in the event of an unplanned release of hydrocarbons, the primary and
secondary well control methods are unavailable / inadequate and there are no other means
immediately available to regain well control, then this defines a blowout. In this case, actions are
taken to ensure the preservation of life and initiate long-term alternative plans to regain control of
the well. Examples of long-term alternative plans to regain control of the well are:
• Firefighting and well capping
• Waiting for the well to bridge-off naturally
• Drilling of a relief well

10. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In case of flow from the well is detected, the WWC and Rig crew takes immediate action to ensure
personnel safety and to regain well control. This requires that the well be shut in as per Saudi Aramco
policies (refer to the Saudi Aramco Well Control Manual October 2002, Sections D.2 and D.4 for details
shutting in the well).
When the flow from the well cannot be controlled / well cannot be shut in by the WWC and Rig Crew,
the situation escalates to an emergency, and the uncontrolled flow has become a blowout. In the case of
such an emergency, all initial actions are to ensure the safety of drill site and offsite personnel.
Following Roles and Responsibilities are established and pre-determined roles and responsibilities
(Table – 3.3) for WWC and crew members. In case of emergency, WWC and rig crew must stay calm
and act fast under the supervision of Saudi Aramco Foreman and Rig Contractor’s Tool Pusher.
• Communicates with Workover Foreman and takes command of the rig crew.
o Keeps Aramco Foreman updated

Workover No. 1 ZULF-29
11. EVACUATION
If emergency situation arises on ZULF-29 and personnel need to be evacuated, the evacuation will be
done by boat. The safest most preferred escape mode is by boat. TEMPSC boat evacuation will be made
upwind.
A. TEMPSC boat should be regularly tested and equipped with well qualified operators are
available on ZULF-29 within a round-the-clock basis.
B. Evacuation plan and route will be demonstrated and selected based on rig emergency response
plan assessment held by rig contractor.
Note: Depending upon the actual wind direction and safe conditions, the Workover Foreman OIM
and Tool pusher will decide mode of evacuation.
• TEMPSC is to be stationed in the davit on the boat launcher with the bow directed out to sea.
• The TEMPSC is capable of handling 55 people
• The TEMPSC must be regularly serviced and tested, to ensure fit-for-purpose, and be readily
available around-the-clock in the event of an emergency.
• The Rig contractor has to provide qualified operators to service test and sail the TEMSPC.
- 12 -
Workover No. 1 ZULF-29
12. H2S SAFETY EQUIPMENT
Well service operations in known or suspect hydrogen sulfide areas shall be conducted to API RP 49
and with Saudi Aramco rules, (SASR Section B-7 Hydrogen Sulphide Safety).
The Workover Foreman will direct Safety Personnel to conduct the inventory, with a subsequent
report, on the SEWOP H2S Equipment in order to verify the unit meets the requirements of SASR
Section B-7 Hydrogen Sulphide Safety. This inventory shall be conducted prior to entering the
Hydrocarbon Zone; additional surveys may be called for at any time for the Workover or Safety Officer.
Therefore, in the event of any drilling rig that will be operating at any of the nearby drill sites
previously mentioned in the paragraph, the following measures shall be implemented to mitigate
drilling associated risks when rigs are operating with the 30 ppm RER of each other:
• A H2S monitoring system integrating the H2S sensors of all the involved sites where rigs may be in
operation shall be in place prior to spud the well ZULF-29. Alarm system has to notify all the
affected rigs at the same time in the case of an event of any of them. Alarm must clearly indicate the
source of the emergency.
• If any kick is taken at one of the rigs present at any of the drill sites mentioned in previous
paragraph, even in a controlled situation, the other rigs will be notified immediately. If the other rig
is down-wind, it should suspend operations and stand-by / prepare to evacuate until the up-wind rig
with the kick is safe.
• In the casing of a real emergency at ZULF-29, the SWAT team leader shall notify the Rig Foreman of
the nearby rigs affected by RER of source well in order to evacuate all the personnel.
• An Emergency Drill combining at least three different scenarios (Fire and/or H2S Drills, Man-down
and Abandon) within the same exercise with a debriefing meeting, to be conducted prior to drilling
the first hydrocarbon zone from ZULF-29, the scenario will include the notification to the vicinity
rig(s), operative within ZULF-29 30 ppm RER in order they proceed to perform an Abandon Drill.
• All personnel accessing the rig shall have updated H2S Certifications.
NOTE: All the above measures shall be implemented in all the rigs whose 30 ppm RER affects each
other before any rig penetrates a hydrocarbon zone(s).
• As soon as operations are started, the number of onsite personnel will never exceed the capacity of
the TEMPSC boats which is 55 people. A strict check-in / check-out card system has to be
implemented for any personnel coming or leaving the rig. Rig Safety Officer will be responsible for
executing and keeping track of the card system in conjunction with the security personnel at the rig
entrance. Aramco Foreman will be responsible for the implementation of the card system and will
coordinate with the Rig Safety Officer in order to keep the onsite personnel number below the
specified figure. For special operations (i.e. pumping jobs) where it is expected to receive
considerable group of personnel onboard, the Aramco Foreman in conjunction with the Rig Safety
Officer will coordinate the required personnel transfers (if required) to standby boat and order to
avoid exceeding 64 people on the rig.
• There will be a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus available for all onsite personnel.
• The TEMPSC will be provided with a compass and GPS to be used for sailing to the proposed staging
areas.
• In the event of a problem arising during the sailing of the TEMPSC, Marine will be called to provide
assistance (call will come from Workover Foreman or ECC).
• Lights will be placed at strategic locations to assist in navigating the TEMPSC.
