 This morning Miguel bought 1 pound of anchovies.

In order to eat with his family, he

used Captura of a pound. How much does he have left in the refrigerator?

We convert 1 into a fraction with the same denominator:

We calculate:

Answer:

 In an election, candidate A got 75% of the total valid votes. If 15% of the total votes
were declared invalid and the total numbers of votes is 560000, find the number of
valid vote polled in favour of candidate.

Solution:

Total number of invalid votes = 15 % of 560000

= 15/100 × 560000

= 8400000/100

= 84000

Total number of valid votes 560000 – 84000 = 476000

 In a group of 60 people, 27 like cold drinks and 42 like hot drinks and each person likes
at least one of the two drinks. How many like both coffee and tea?

Solution:

Let A = Set of people who like cold drinks.

B = Set of people who like hot drinks.

Given

(A ∪ B) = 60 n(A) = 27 n(B) = 42 then;

n(A ∩ B) = n(A) + n(B) - n(A ∪ B)

= 27 + 42 - 60

= 69 - 60 = 9

=9

Therefore, 9 people like both tea and coffee.

 The product of two consecutive even integers is 528. Find the value of each integer.

We are going to follow the same steps as in #1.

Let n = the first integer Let n+2 = the 2nd integer

(First integer)*(Second integer) = 528

(n)*(n + 2) = 528

n2 + 2n = 528

n2 + 2n -528 = 528 – 528

n2 + 2n -528 = 0

(n + 24)(n – 22) = 0

n + 24 = 0 or n – 22 = 0
n = -24 or n = 22

If n = -24 then the 2nd integer is n + 2 or -24 + 2 = -22 so the two integers are -24 and -22

If n = 22 then the 2nd integer is n + 2 or 22 + 2 = 24 so the two integers are 22 and 24.

 A rectangular swimming pool is twice as long as it is wide. A small concrete walkway

surrounds the pool. The walkway is a constant 2 feet wide and has an area of 196
square feet. Find the dimensions of the pool.

The first thing you need to do is to define your variables. In this example, the length is
described in terms of the width so define the width.

Let w = the width of the pool

The problem says that the length is twice as long as the width and remembers that twice means
to multiply by 2.

Let 2w = the length of the pool

This means that the area of the pool is A = (w)(2w)

The pool has a concrete walkway of 2 feet surrounding it so this means that there is 2 feet on
EACH SIDE of the width and the length so we need to increase BOTH the length and width by 4
in order to get the length and width of the pool and the walkway.

This means that the width is w + 4 and the length is 2w + 4. This means that the walkway and
pool area is: A = (w + 4)(2w + 4)

We are also given that the area of the walkway and the pool is 196 square feet.
In this case we have two areas. We have the area of the pool and the area of the walkway and
pool (See picture).

In order to find the dimensions we need to use the two different areas.

Area Total = Area Walkway and Pool – Area Pool

196 = (w + 4)(2w + 4) - (w)(2w)

196 = (2w2 + 4w + 8w + 16) – 2w2

196 = 2w2 + 4w + 8w + 16 – 2w2

196 = 12w+ 16

196 - 16 = 12w+ 16- 16

180 = 12w

12 12

15 = w

So now we know that the width of the pool is 15 ft. But we aren’t done yet. The question asked
for the dimensions so we still need to find the length. The length is twice the width so 2 * 15 =
30ft.

The dimensions of the pool are 15 ft by 30 ft.

 The product of two consecutive negative integers is 1122. What are
the numbers?

Remember that consecutive integers are one unit apart, so my numbers

are n and n + 1. Multiplying to get the product, I get:

n(n + 1) = 1122
n2 + n = 1122
n2 + n – 1122 = 0
(n + 34)(n – 33) =

The solutions are n = –34 and n = 33. I need a negative value, so I'll ignore "n = 33"
and
take n = –34. Then the other number is n + 1 = (–34) + 1 = –33.

The two numbers are –33 and –34.

 Earthquake intensity is measured by the Richter scale. The formula for the
Richter rating of a given quake is given by "R = log[ I ÷ I0 ]" where I0 is the
"threshold quake", or movement that can barely be detected, and the
intensity I is given in terms of multiples of that threshold intensity.

You have a seismograph set up at home, and see that there was an event while
you were out that had an intensity of I = 989I0. Given that a heavy truck rumbling by
can cause a microquake with a Richter rating of 3 or 3.5, and "moderate" quakes
have a Richter rating of 4 or more, what was likely the event that occurred while you
were out?

To determine the probable event, I need to convert the intensity to a Richter rating
by evaluating the Richter function at I = 989I0:

R = log[ I ÷ I0 ]
= log[ 989I0 ÷ I0 ]
= log[989]
= 2.9951962916...

A Richter rating of about 3 is not a high enough rating to have been a moderate
quake;

 It has been observed that a particular plant's growth is directly proportional

to time. It measured 2 cm when it arrived at the nursury and 2.5 cm exactly
one week later. If the plant continues to grow at this rate, determine the
function that represents the plant's growth and graph it.

Initial height = 2 cm

Weekly growth = 2.5 − 2 = 0.5

y= 0.5 x + 2

 You make a purchase at a local hardware store, but what you've bought is
too big to take home in your car. For a small fee, you arrange to have the
hardware store deliver your purchase for you. You pay for your purchase,
plus the sales taxes, plus the fee. The taxes are 7.5% and the fee is $20.
(i) Write a function t(x) for the total, after taxes, on the purchase amount x. Write
another function f(x) for the total, including the delivery fee, on the purchase
amount x.
(ii) Calculate and interpret ( f o t)(x) and (t o f )(x). Which results in a lower cost to
you?
(iii) Suppose taxes, by law, are not to be charged on delivery fees. Which
composite function must then be used?

This sort of calculation actually comes up in "real life", and is used for programming
the cash registers. And this is why there is a separate button on the register for
delivery fees and why they're not rung up as just another purchase.

(i) The taxes are 7.5%, so the tax function is given by t(x) = 1.075x

The delivery fee is fixed, so the purchase amount is irrelevant.

The fee function is given by f (x) = x + 20

(ii) Composing, I get this:

( f o t)(x) = f (t(x)) = f (1.075x) = 1.075x + 20

(t o f )(x) = t( f (x)) = t(x + 20) = 1.075(x + 20)
= 1.075x + 21.50

Then I would pay more using (t o f )(x), because I would be paying taxes
(the t(x) formula) on the delivery fee (the "+20" in the f (x) formula). I would prefer
that the delivery fee be tacked on after the taxes, because ( f o t)(x) results in a
lower cost to me.

(iii) If the state is not allowed to collect taxes on delivery fees, then:

The function to use is ( f o t)(x)

 The angle of elevation of the top of the building at a distance of 50 m from its foot on
a horizontal plane is found to be 60 degree. Find the height of the building.

Solution :

tanθ = Opposite side/Adjacent side

tan 60° = AB/BC

√3 = AB/50

√3 x 50 = AB

AB = 50√3

Approximate value of √3 is 1.732

AB = 50 (1.732)

AB = 86.6 m

So, the height of the building is 86.6 m.

 A ladder placed against a wall such that it reaches the top of the wall of height 6 m
and the ladder is inclined at an angle of 60 degree. Find how far the ladder is from the
foot of the wall.

Solution :

tan θ = Opposite side/Adjacent side

tan60° = AB/BC

√3 = 6/BC

BC = 6/√3

BC = (6/√3) x (√3/√3)

BC = (6√3)/3

BC = 2√3

Approximate value of √3 is 1.732

BC = 2 (1.732)

BC = 3.464 m

So, the distance between foot of the ladder and the wall is 3.464 m.

 A string of a kite is 100 meters long and it makes an angle of 60° with horizontal. Find
the height of the kite,assuming that there is no slack in the string.

Solution :

Sin θ = Opposite side/Hypotenuse side

sinθ = AB/AC
sin 60° = AB/100

√3/2 = AB/100

(√3/2) x 100 = AB

AB = 50 √3 m

So, the height of kite from the ground 50 √3 m

 A triangle has a perimeter of 50. If 2 of its sides are equal and the third side is 5 more
than the equal sides, what is the length of the third side?

Solution:

Step 1: Assign variables:

Let x = length of the equal side

Sketch the figure

Step 2: Write out the formula for perimeter of triangle.

P = sum of the three sides

Step 3: Plug in the values from the question and from the sketch.

50 = x + x + x + 5

Combine like terms

50 = 3x + 5

Isolate variable x
3x = 50 – 5
3x = 45
x =15
Be careful! The question requires the length of the third side.

The length of third side = 15 + 5 =20

Answer: The length of third side is 20

 A rectangle is 4 times as long as it is wide. If the length is increased by 4 inches and the
width is decreased by 1 inch, the area will be 60 square inches. What were the
dimensions of the original rectangle?

Solution:

Step 1: Assign variables:

Let x = original width of rectangle

Sketch the figure

Step 2: Write out the formula for area of rectangle.

A = lw

Step 3: Plug in the values from the question and from the sketch.

60 = (4x + 4)(x –1)

Use distributive property to remove brackets

60 = 4x2 – 4x + 4x – 4

Put in Quadratic Form

4x2 – 4 – 60 = 0
4x2 – 64 = 0

This quadratic can be rewritten as a difference of two squares

(2x)2 – (8)2 = 0
Factorize difference of two squares
(2x)2 – (8)2 = 0
(2x – 8)(2x + 8) = 0

We get two values for x.

Since x is a dimension, it would be positive. So, we take x = 4

The question requires the dimensions of the original rectangle.

The width of the original rectangle is 4.
The length is 4 times the width = 4 × 4 = 16

Answer: The dimensions of the original rectangle are 4 and 16.

 In a quadrilateral two angles are equal. The third angle is equal to the sum of the two
equal angles. The fourth angle is 60° less than twice the sum of the other three angles.
Find the measures of the angles in the quadrilateral.

Solution:

Step 1: Assign variables:

Let x = size of one of the two equal angles

Sketch the figure

Step 2: Write down the sum of angles in quadrilateral.

The sum of angles in a quadrilateral is 360°

Step 3: Plug in the values from the question and from the sketch.

360 = x + x + (x + x) + 2(x + x + x + x) – 60
Combine like terms
360 = 4x + 2(4x) – 60
360 = 4x + 8x – 60
360 = 12x – 60

Isolate variable x
12x = 420
x = 35

The question requires the values of all the angles.

Substituting x for 35, you will get: 35, 35, 70, 220

Answer: The values of the angles are 35°, 35°, 70° and 220°

 Farmer Jones owns a citrus tree farm in Florida. During some parts of the year the
amount of rain in Florida is not sufficient to maintain maximum growth of citrus so
farmer Jones is going to buy a water tank. Find how much water it will hold if it is
a right circular cylinder with a height of 10 feet and a radius of radius of 5 feet.

Solution:

By substitution,

V = r 2h
V = (5)2(10)
V = (25)(10)
V = 250 ft3

If we approximate the value of = 3.14 then

V = 785 ft3

 Soccer balls come in several different sizes. One of the soccer balls has a diameter of
24 centimeters. What is the volume of this soccer ball ? Round your answer to the
nearest tenth. Use the approximate of value of ∏, that is 3.14.

Solution :
Step 1 :

Because soccer ball is in the shape of sphere, we can use the formula of volume of a sphere to
find volume of the soccer ball.

Write the formula to find volume of a sphere.

V = 4/3 · ∏r³ ----- (1)

Step 2 :

To find the volume, we need the radius of the sphere. But, the diameter is given, that is 24 cm.
So, find the radius.

r = diameter / 2

r = 24/2

r = 12

Step 3 :

Plug ∏ ≈ 3.14 and r = 12 in (1).

V ≈ 4/3 · 3.14 · 12³

Simplify.

V ≈ 4/3 · 3.14 · 1728

V ≈ 7,234.6

Hence, the volume of the soccer ball is about 7,234.6 cubic cm.
 Let, the square WXYZ be the base of the right pyramid and its diagonals WY and XZ
intersect at O. If OP be perpendicular to the plane of the square at O, then OP is the
height of the pyramid.

Draw OE ┴ WX

Then, E is the mid - point of WX.

By question, OP = 16 cm. and WX = 24 cm.

Therefore, OE = EX = 1/2 ∙ WX = 12 cm

Clearly, PE is the slant height of the pyramid.

Since OP ┴ OE, hence from ∆ POE we get,

PE² = OP² + OE²

or,PE² = 16² + 12²

or, PE² = 256 + 144

or, PE² = 400

PE = √400

Therefore, PE = 20.

Therefore, (i) the required area of slant surface of the right pyramid

= 1/2 × perimeter of the base × slant height.

= 1/2 × 4 × 24× 20 square cm.

= 960 square cm.

(ii) The area of the whole surface of the right pyramid = area of slant surface + area of the base
= (960 + 24 × 24) square cm
= 1536 square cm.

(iii) the volume of the right pyramid

= 1/3 × area of the base × height
= 1/3 × 24 × 24 × 16 cubic cm
= 3072 cubic cm.
 Write the equation of the line in slope-intercept form with a slope of - \,5−5 and a y-
intercept of 33.

The needed information to write the equation of the line in the form y = mx + by=mx+b are
clearly given in the problem since

m = - \,5m=−5 (slope)

b = 3b=3 (yy-intercept)

Substituting in y = mx + by=mx+b, we obtain

By having a negative slope, the line is decreasing/falling from left to right, and passing through
the y-axis at point ( {0,3} \right)(0,3).

 Write the equation of the line in slope-intercept form with a slope of 7 and a y-
intercept of - 4−4.

The slope is given as m = 7m=7 and the y-intercept as b = -4. Substituting into the slope-
intercept formula y = mx + by=mx+b, we have

The slope is positive thus the line is increasing or rising from left to right, but passing through
the y-axis at point (0, - ,4)(0,−4).

 A line with the slope of -8−8 and passing through the point (-4, – 1) (−4, −1).

The given slope is m = -8m=−8 and from the given point (- 4, - 1) (−4, −1), we have x =
4x=−4 and y = -1y=−1. Now, we are going to substitute the known values into the slope-
intercept form of the line to solve for bb.

Since m = -8m=−8 and b = -33b=−33, the slope-intercept form of the line becomes
