Lesson 5
Internal rives, External Bays, and Adapter Cards

Internal drives are installed through internal bays. External drives are installed through
the external bays located on the front panel. Adapter cards are used to add to the functionality
of the system.

Installing HDDs
 Align the hard disk drive with the drive bay then insert the hard drive into the bay until
the holes on the rive align with that of the system case.

 Secure the drive using the appropriate screws.

 Connect the power supply to the hard drive.

 Connect the SATA connector to the hard drive.

 Connect the SATA connector that is connected to the hard drive to the motherboard.

Installing optical drives


An optical drive is used to read and write information onto a Cd or DVD.
Installation Procedure:
 Align the optical drive to the drive bay.

 Insert the drive into the bay until the holes on the drive align with that of the system
case.

 Secure the drive using the appropriate screws.

 Connect the power supply to the hard drive.

 Connect the SATA connector that is connected to the hard drive to the motherboard.

Installing NIC
A network interface card (NIC) allows the computer to connect to a network. It usually uses a
PCI and PCIe expansion slots on the motherboard.
Installation Procedure:
 Align the adapter card with the suited expansion slot on the motherboard. Gently press
down until it is fully sealed.

 Secure its pc mounting bracket using the required screws.

Installing Wireless NIC


A wireless NIC allows the computer to connect to a wireless network.
 Align the adapter card with the suited expansion slot on the motherboard.

 Gently press down until it is fully seated.


 Secure its pc mounting bracket using the required screws.

Installing a Video Adapter Card

A video adapter card is used to enable the interaction of the computer and the display.
It uses PCI, AGP, and PCIe expansion slots.
Installation Procedure:
 Align the adapter card with the suited expansion slot on the motherboard.
 Gently press down until it is fully seated.
 Secure its pc mounting bracket using the required screws.
