CHRONEMICS
The code relating to the use of TIME

CHRONEMICS
Chronemics is the study of how time is used in communication. Time can be used
as a communication tool in many ways, from punctuality to expectations around
waiting and response time, to general principles around time management.
Chronemics has become an area of study primarily for anthropologists, who look at
cultural norms around the use of time, and the way cultures can vary and converge
around different norms. More recently, chronemics appears to be branching out
into other disciplines, such as the more business oriented study of organizational
behavior.
PROXEMICS
The study of DISTANCE as a meaning system

PROXEMICS
Proxemic communication is communicating with others by virtue of the relative
positioning of your bodies.
Intimate distance is that which is used for very confidential communications.
Personal distance is used for talking with family and close friends.
Social distance is used in business transactions, meeting new people and
interacting with groups of people.
Public distance is measured at 12 or more feet between persons.
HAPTICS
The study of the rules governing TOUCH

HAPTICS
Haptics is a form of non- verbal communication using a sense of touch. Some
forms of Haptics communication are handshake, or a gentle pat on back, or a high
five. The sense of touch allows one to experience different sensations.
Haptics can be categorized into five types:
- Functional/Professional - Social/ Polite
- Friendship/Warmth - Love/Intimacy
- Sexual/Arousal
KINESICS
The study of MOVEMENT as a meaning system

KINESICS
Kinesic communication is communicating by body movement and is perhaps the
most well-known non-verbal form of communication, although it is not the only
way to talk with others without words.
Body posture - the way that the body is held can communicate many different
messages. An open body that takes up a lot of space can indicate comfort and
domination, whilst a closed-in body that makes itself small can signal inferiority.
Copying of the other person's body shows agreement, trust and liking.
Gesture - is communicating through the movement of body and arms.
-Emblems: Direct replacements for words. -Illustrators: Shaping what is being said.
-Affect displays: shows of emotion. -Regulators: for controlling the flow of
conversation
-Adaptors: Self-oriented tension relievers and other forms.
VOCALICS
The study of VOICE as a code for communication

VOCALICS
Vocalics is how people express themselves through voice. The voice has different
vocal properties. These properties are: rate, or speed at which the person speaks,
pitch, inflection and variety in the voice, volume, being loud or soft, and
articulation and pronunciation, or how correctly and clearly the person speaks. The
voice will also develop physiological habits that are called vocal qualities. These
qualities are: breathiness, think Joan Rivers, raspiness, or hoarseness like someone
who has been smoking for far too long, and nasality, having a really whiny voice.
OCULESICS
The study of EYE behavior for communication

OCULESICS
Oculesics refers to the study of eye contact and pupil dilation in terms of nonverbal
communication. Eye contact indicates interest, opennesss, and sometimes even
arousal, though aggressive eye contact--or staring--can be interpreted as a sign of
hostility. In addition to this, lack of eye contact also transmits a message,
oftentimes that the listener is bored and/or is not paying attention.
ICONICS
The use of SYMBOLS for communication

ICONICS
Iconics is a type of nonverbal communication that uses symbols or icons to express
one’s thoughts or ideas and feelings/emotions. It is often use in social media
applications like Facebook and Messenger where individuals use emojis to show
their reactions about something. Other examples of iconic communication include
the use of traffic signs and male/female symbols in comfort rooms.
PICTICS
The use of FACIAL EXPRESSIONS

PICTICS
A facial expression is one or more motions or positions of the muscles beneath the
skin of the face. These movements convey the emotional state of an individual to
observers. Facial expressions are a form of nonverbal communication. They are a
primary means of conveying social information between humans. The human face
is extremely expressive, able to express countless emotions without saying a word.
And unlike some forms of nonverbal communication, facial expressions are
universal. The facial expressions for happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, fear, and
disgust are the same across cultures.
COLORICS
Meaning of COLORS

COLORICS
Colors can also be used to indicate a message from a person or a situation. By their
very nature, signs, banners and other such marketing aids are intended to
communicate messages to people on the street quickly, simply and effectively.
Used effectively, they can be a great way to send messages to potential customers
with very little expense and effort. Of course, effective use comes with
understanding how symbols and visual messages are sent. At least partially, this
involves understanding the messages particular color schemes send. After all, the
different colors you choose to present in a sign or flag will have a great impact on
the sort of message they will send to people looking at them.
OLFACTICS
Sense of SMELL

OLFACTICS
Smell, or olfactics, is part of nonverbal communication. People will react
positively or negatively to other people based on the way they smell. A person’s
smell remains in another person’s memory long after he or she has left the room.
You smell like you do because of hygiene, what you eat (particularly spices), and
the scents you apply to your skin. Other examples are the smells of different
objects or dishes that you can easily recognize with your nose.
