DEFINITION OF TERMS
 Tree - It is tall plant with a trunk and branches made of wood.
 Fruit bearing tree - It is a type of tree which bears a fruit that is consumed by
humans and some animals.
 Planting – It is the process of casting handfuls of seed over prepared ground or
cutting stems of a matured plant.
 Fruit – The sweet and freshly product of a tree or other plant that contains seed
and can be eaten.
 Propagation – A process of a new plant.
 Kalingag – It is a medium size tree that is commonly found in the Phils. And is
related to the culinary cinnamon and bay tree.
 Orchard - It is an intentional planting of trees or shrubs that is maintained for
food production in land areas.
 Land – it is a space where plants grow.
 Temperature – it refers to the measure of hotness and coldness of a body.
 Water – it is a transparent fluid that transport nutrients form the roots to the
upper part of the plants.
 Sunlight – it refers to the energy needed by the plants to make food.
 Roots – are the responsible for the absorption of water and minerals, storage, and plant
anchorage.
 Photosynthesis – it is the process of food making in plants
 Fruit Orchard – is a kind of orchard that focuses on growing fruit-bearing trees.
 Pattern – the arrangement of an object in a particular space/area\
 Design – it is the creation of a plan for the construction of an object or a system
 Alternate – a repeated design
 Vertical – being in a position or direction perpendicular to the plane of the horizontal
 Layout – it refers to interchange repeatedly and regularly with one another in time or
places

IMPORTANCE OF TREES TO LIVING THINGS


1) Trees provide food

4) Trees beautify the surroundings and provide clean air.

SUCCESSFUL PERSON IN ORCHARD FARMING
 Mrs. Naty Abrigo – is running a 24-hectare fruit farm in Calauan, Laguna. She
was featured in one of the broadsheets on January 10, 2014 for her success
story.
 Marcelo Escario – is an operator of a big orchard in Calabanga, Camarines Sur.
He grows rambutan and mango trees.
 Avelino Lomboys – He owns Lomboy Farms, a family owned business engaged
in the culture and production of grapes in La Union.

FRUIT BEARING TREES APPROPRIATE FOR ORCHARD FARMING


1) Mango (Mangefira indica) – it is the Philippines national fruit and predominantly
grown in the most parts of our country.
2) Papaya (Carica papaya) – It can be easily grown in areas with tropical and sub-
tropical climate.
3) Avocado – it grows best in moderately warm temperature with moderate
humidity.
4) Lanzones (Lansium domesticum) – it grows 30 meters in height and 75
centimeters in diameter, and has a berry-fruit that contains 1-3 seeds.
5) Pomelo – it grows from 5 – 15 meters tall and is closely related to grapefruit.
6) Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophylluys) – it is said to have originated in Western
Ghats in India and well suited in lowland areas and widely cultivated in tropical
regions.
FAMOUS ORCHARD FARM IN THE PHILIPPINES
1) Gapuz Grapes Farm – it is one of the biggest suppliers of grapes nationwide
found in Brgy. Urayong between Caba and Bauang in La Union.
2) Strawberry Farm – it is located at La Trinidad Valley, Benguet, less than 10km
from the center of Baguio City.
3) Rosa Farms – are owned by Mr. and Mrs. Jocson, it is a 13-hectare mango
orchard located at San Antonio, Zambales.
