Eskrima
Eskrima
Watching the video about Kali was already been astonishing for me. But, after watching
the next documentary, titled the “human weapon”, it turns out to be that there is still much to learn
about the combat styles originally originated in our country. In the episode, they tackled about the
combat style of Eskrima. I can describe the style as the combination and evolution of all combat
styles of the Philippines, and by saying that it is an evolution in my opinion, means it is more
effective, dangerous and brutal from all the martial arts in the country. In this paper, I listed some
of my highlights and takeaways regarding Eskrima.
The approach of the documentary is quite the same compared to the previous episode that
I have watched. Same context in which two foreign guys tried to learn the combat style and at the
end they were put into a test by entering a real one-on-one combat. They only differ in such a way
that throughout the video, different branches of Eskrima were shown. Which makes the overall
presentation of the episode bounded to the learnings and values of the style.
Eskrima, as shown in the video, is a style that is already present even before the Spanish
colonization happened. Knowing that Kali is the foundation and the root of Eskrima made me
realized that combat styles before were given value and honor until today. The preservation of the
style that was passed unto generations makes it more authentic and unique. Now I know what
combat style was used to defeat Magellan. Moreover, as it was passed through generations, new
art forms emerged which creates different variations of the combat style, new strategies and forms
arise. One of which is the Baliog Pomali, in which for me is a very effective form in hand to hand
combat. This supports the ide that Eskrima is not only for stick fighting, but also considered knife,
and hand combat. I was amazed on how the masters of Kali balance the elements of offense and
defense, like disarming and a strike as a follow-up, a hit and a counter attack, and many more.
Even by only watching their movements, I had already felt that it is hard, so what more if I will be
the one who will train and experience it. But I know knowing this will surely be helpful for me.
In summary, the combat style Eskrima is one of our own combat styles. Our ancestors have
already won many victories with the help of this style. Our goal is to honor and continue to preserve
the value and teaching that our history gave to us. For the real weapon is not the stick, bolo or
knife, but it is all about the character of being a Filipino Warrior.
