Problem 2 A

1. The document provides rainfall data from 5 rain gages within a drainage basin polygon to calculate the average rainfall using arithmetic, Thiessen, and isohyetal methods. 2. Annual rainfall data from station A and a group of 8 neighboring stations over 22 years is given to test consistency and determine a mean annual rainfall. 3. Incremental rainfall data recorded in Austin, TX on May 24, 1981 is provided to plot rainfall and cumulative hyetographs and calculate rainfall depths and intensities over various durations.

Problem Set 2 Precipitation

1. The shape of the drainage basin can be approximated by a polygon, whose vertices are located at the following
coordinates: (5, 5), (-5, 5), (-5,-5), (0.-10), and (5,-5). The rainfall amounts of a storm were recorded by a number of rain
gages situated within and nearby the basin as follows:

All coordinates are expressed in kilometers. Determine the average rainfall on the basin by (a) arithmetic-mean method, (b)
the Thiessen method, and (c) the isohyetal method. Hints: For the Thiessen method, begin by drawing the polygon around
gage 9, then draw the polygons around gages 2,3,5,and 7; for the isohyetal method, draw isohyets with the maximum rainfall
on a ridge running southwest to northeast through (-3,3).

2. Test the consistency of the 22 years of data of the annual precipitation measured at station A. Rainfall data for station A
as well as the average annual rainfall measured at a group of eight neighboring stations located in a meteorologically
homogeneous region as follows.
Average Annual Average Annual
Annual Rainfall Annual Rainfall
Rainfall of 8 Rainfall of 8

a. In what year is a change in regime indicated?

b. Adjust the recorded data at station A and determine the mean annual precipitation.

3. The following incremental rainfall data was recorded at gage 1-WLN in Austin, Texas, on May 24, 1981. Plot the
rainfall hyetograph. Compute and plot the cumulative rainfall hyetograph. Calculate the maximum depth and intensity of
rainfall for 5,10,30,60, 90 and 120 min of this storm.

4. Refer to Annual Rainfall Data. Estimate the recurrence interval (return period) for various magnitudes. By suitable
extrapolation, determine the magnitude of annual rainfall at the station corresponding to a recurrence interval of 5, 10,
20, 25, 30, and 50 years.

5. Refer to RIDF Data. Make a graph showing a Rainfall Intensity – Duration - Frequency Curve and Depth – Duration –
Frequency Curve for 2, 10, 20 and 50 years return period.
