Contraindicated for Pregnancy Reasons Examples
1. Breath retention and/or Affects delivery of oxygen Viloma pranayama, breath
strong, forced breathing to the fetus of fire
2. Advanced poses that Stress to mother and Any poses that are vigorous
challenge and build heat fetus, overheating and/or new to the pregnant
practitioner
3. Poses that engage and/or Can cause stretching Leg lifts, boat pose, plank
stretch the rectus and/or tearing of pose, chaturanga, crow
abdominus muscles abdominal muscles pose
4. Front Extensions Can overstretch Camel, wheel, upward
abdominal muscles facing dog
5. Inversions Decreases blood flow to Headstand, handstand,
uterus, can cause shoulder stand

6. Prone Poses (on belly) Uncomfortable for Cobra, bow, sphinx
mother, not advised for
safety of baby
7. Closed Twists Too much pressure on Revolved triangle, revolved
abdominal cavity side angle, seated closed

8. Hot Yoga Overheating can cause Moksha, Bikram
miscarriage and/or birth
defects


This list is gives the general guidelines regarding yoga and pregnancy.
Each pregnancy is unique and therefore it is best to talk with your
healthcare provider and a Registered Prenatal Yoga Teacher (RPYT) to
develop a practice that suits your specific needs.
