Course Description
Materials
AP Statistics is the equivalent of a one-semester introductory college
• TI-83/84 Graphing Calculator
statistics course. The purpose of this AP course is to introduce
• Textbook TPS5e
students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, organizing,
• Binder with dividers
analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. Students design,
• Binder paper and/or graph paper
administer, and tabulate results from surveys and experiments.
• Pencils & erasers
Probability and simulations aid students in constructing models for
chance behavior. Sampling distributions provide the logical structure • Red correcting pen

for confidence intervals and hypothesis tests. Students use a TI-83/84 • Dry erase whiteboard markers

graphing calculator to investigate statistical concepts. To develop • Highlighters

effective statistical communication skills, students are required to • Optional: Post-it notes, index
prepare frequent written and oral analyses of real data. cards, & multi-colored pens

As we proceed through this class students will learn appropriate

statistical techniques and a variety of ways to communicate them within the context of statistical activities
and experiences. You will gain a working knowledge of statistical vocabulary and will be expected to use it
correctly everyday. You will also learn to be a competent interpreter and investigator of statistical data and
information. You will learn how to make connections between all aspects of the statistical process, including
design, analysis, and conclusions. You will be responsible for communicating methods, results, and
interpretations using the correct vocabulary. In order to accomplish these goals, you will be expected to read
the assigned sections prior to each class and be actively engaged in class. Reading the textbook in advance is
critical to your success in this course.

Topics Covered
• Exploring Data • Sampling Distributions
• Modeling Distributions of Data • Confidence Intervals
• Describing Relationships (linear regression) • Testing a Claim
• Designing Studies • Comparing Two Populations or Groups
• Probability • Inference for Categorical Data
• Random Variables • Linear Regression Inference

The AP Exam
The AP Statistics Exam will be given on May 15th, 2020 at 12pm. I expect all students taking the class to take the
exam. It is optional but recommended to obtain an AP review book such as Barron’s to use during the entire year.
Student Accountability
This is a college course. It is rigorous and expectations are high. Students are expected to closely read
section topics ahead of time so that we can use class time optimally for concept discussion, group problems,
class activities, asking questions, individualized support, and time to complete more difficult, higher order
thinking problems. Please see the monthly calendar to know which section you should read in advance of class.
Occasionally, I will give unannounced reading quizzes to check your understanding of the assigned readings.
These quizzes will be graded “holistically” and a raw score will be recorded in Infinite Campus. It is important to
understand that SKIMMING the readings or just reading the summaries at the end of each section will NOT help
you pass.

Requesting Help
As a college student in this class, you are responsible for learning the content and coming to me with specific
questions from the readings or from specific problems on the homework. It is very important to me that you
understand the material and are successful in my class, and I am MORE than happy to help you! Please don’t
hesitate to ask for help from myself, your peers, and use the online resources on my website.

Tutorial: If you need individual help, you must attend tutorial on the assigned AP Statistics days (Tuesdays &
Thursdays only). Bring your textbook, your notes, graphing calculator, and whatever problem you need help
with. I might answer them individually, or as a big group. I will also have my Teacher’s Edition available if you
would like to check your solutions for the even-numbered problems that are not in the back of the book.

Appointments: If you need to make an appointment with me, please do so through email at [email protected]
(not verbally - I will not remember each student’s verbal requests). You must give me at least 24-48 hours email
notice to see me at lunch or before/after school. No exceptions. Please do not show up announced since I will
usually be busy preparing for my next class, making copies, answering emails, and meeting with parents or
students with appointments. I truly appreciate you respecting this rule & I thank you in advance.

And let’s be real here: I will not be able to give you a recap lesson of an entire block period during my lunch or
during the 10-minute break after tutorial. J So, be prepared with specific questions when you require
assistance and utilize tutorial first and foremost! Be proactive & always ask for help – I’m here to support YOU!

Tutorial Policy
Tutorial is designated for AP Statistics on Tuesday’s and Thursdays and students must sign up in advance at
https://wgtutorial.sjusd.org/students/. Students are expected to be productive during the entirety of tutorial,
meaning they must be working on AP Statistics assignments, pre-readings, or making up tests and quizzes
from excused absences. Students may not use their cell phones, socialize with friends, or sleep in tutorial.
Students are welcome to work on current statistics assignments in pairs or groups, as well as tutor each
other.

Email Etiquette
• I will check my email between 7:30 – 2:30pm weekdays only. If you need help as mentioned above, please
make sure you email me at least 24 – 48 hours in advance of your appointment request.
• For example, if Joe needs help on a problem on Monday during lunch, he needs to email me by 2:30pm
Friday. If Joe needs help on Thursday before school, he needs to email me by 7:30am on Wednesday.
• Please email me from your school email only. Your email should include an appropriate subject, formal
salutation, be worded professionally and courteously, and include a proper signature. You will be treated
with the same respect.
Behavior Expectations
Students are expected to follow all Willow Glen High School and San Jose Unified School District rules,
regulations, and expectations. Students are expected to:
1) Be positive: respect yourself, your peers, and the teacher. Maintain a positive attitude, or NO attitude.
2) Be prompt: be on time to class, in your seat, and ready to begin work as soon as the bell rings.
3) Be prepared: show up with all required materials and completed work/readings.
4) Be productive: do your best work 100% of the time. No excuses.
5) Be proactive: ask for help or support when you need it, don’t wait. Make up all missed work and lessons.

Academic Integrity
Academic honesty is a fundamental value of quality education. Any form of cheating (plagiarism, copying,
allowing somebody to copy, etc.) is not tolerated and will result in the following consequences:
(1) Whatever you are working on to be thrown away and you will receive a zero for that assignment. If
the work is from a student in another class, the other teacher will be notified. The student who
gave you the assignment to copy will also receive a zero for the assignment.
(2) Tests/Quizzes will be given a grade of “0” and parent will be notified if cheating takes place. This
includes looking at another student’s quiz, using any form of “cheat sheets”, saving prohibited
content in your graphing calculator, and using your phone during an assessment. It is at the full
discretion of the teacher to determine if cheating has taken place.
(3) The principal will be notified and a record of cheating will be recorded in student records.

Electronic Policy
Electronic devices of any type will not be permitted in the classroom unless you are instructed to use it for a
class activity or as the teacher sees fit. All phones or portable devices must be turned off and put away in
backpack before entering the classroom. No headphones will be allowed during class. If a phone is out during
class, Mrs. Conti will confiscate the device. After the first offense, the student will be able to pick up the
device after school. The second time, the device will go to Mr. Gallegos. Parents will be notified if further
offenses occur and the device will be kept until a parent picks it up.

Food, Drink, and Bathroom Policy

FOOD & DRINK: In order to maintain a clean learning environment, no food or drink is allowed during class
except for water. No Starbucks drinks, sodas, or any sweet/sticky drinks because every year there have been
multiple instances of spills that result in unsanitary sticky carpets, tables, and seats. NO EXCEPTIONS.

BATHROOM: Students should go to the bathroom before class begins. Students should avoid going to the
bathroom during warm ups, lecture/notes, class activities, and group discussions. Students may go to the
bathroom during independent work time and must ask the teacher for permission. The student must use their
allotted “bathroom passes” (give to Mrs. Conti), then grab the bathroom pass by the door and sign out &
back in on the posted sheet. Students should not be gone longer than 5 minutes or privileges may be revoked
at the teacher’s discretion. If you are having a bad day with stomach trouble, please let Mrs. Conti know and
she will understand if you need a little longer in the restroom.
Grading System
Course grades are cumulative through the end of each semester and progress reports are mailed home during
each grading period. Student performance will be assessed in the categories listed below and the weighted scores
will determine the letter grade. There is no extra credit in this AP math class. NO GRADES ARE ROUNDED.
Categories:
• Assignments (15%) A+: 97 – 100% B+: 87 – 89% C+: 77 – 79% D+: 67 – 69%

It is your responsibility to complete the assignments even if you miss a class.
• Missing or late work will be marked as “missing” or “late” in Infinite Campus and will receive a “0”.
Tests, Quizzes, Projects
In order to better prepare students for the AP exam, the quizzes and tests will contain multiple choice questions
and free response questions, similar to those on the AP exam. A project will be assigned second semester.
• Lowest quiz score for each semester will be dropped.
• Each student will automatically receive 20 bonus points out of 100 on each exam to reduce the impact
of lower scores.
• Assessments may not be retaken.
• All assessments will contain topics from current material as well as information from previous chapters/units.
• Students must bring their own graphing calculator for each assessment.
• Quizzes and tests may only be made up if an absence is excused. Students are expected to email Ms.
Voinea prior to any planned excused absences, or as soon as possible for an unforeseen excused absence.
• You must make up quizzes and tests during tutorial within two school days after you are back in
school. Email Mrs. Conti to schedule the make up assessment. Missing will receive a “0”.
• If you have 504/IEP accommodations, you must make arrangements in advance of any deadline.

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians:

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year at Willow Glen High School! I am very excited to be teaching your student AP
Statistics this year. I would like to see each of my students be successful and confident in this math class, and I am looking
forward to working with you to make this happen. I will be utilizing explicit direct instruction, collaborative group work,
classroom data collection activities, class discussions, calculator and computer technology, and the flipped classroom
model to provide your student with a quality educational experience in this course.

AP Statistics is a rigorous college course and I expect students to be accountable for their learning at all times. Please
ensure that your student pre-reads all assigned sections, completes homework with utmost quality, and seeks my support
when they need help as these are all vital to their success on tests, quizzes, and the AP exam. I expect all students to
communicate to me ahead of time if they are not making progress or need my support. There are no exceptions for any
of the rules stated in the syllabus.

Students: my goal for the year is to help you be successful, confident, and independent thinkers. Although this course may
not be easy, I believe that all of you can succeed. Please come to me with any questions that you have so that we can
make your learning experience as constructive as possible. I care about each of you and your learning, and will do
everything in my power to support you this school year. Please don’t hesitate to talk to me if you are struggling – that’s
what I’m here for!

Parents: I value your partnership and I welcome you to reach out to me at [email protected] (tentative to change) with
any questions or concerns about your child. It is my aim to help your student succeed and reach his/her highest potential
in this course. With that being said, this is a college course and I expect your child to be responsible for his or her own
learning in my course. Although parent involvement is sometimes necessary, I believe that AP students should be training
themselves for the real world and learn how to become independent in preparation for college and beyond. Please
encourage your child to advocate for themselves if they are struggling. I am here to support them.

Kind Regards,

Mrs. Alexandra Conti, MA. Ed.
