Exercise 1 AGRI 21

This document discusses the external anatomy and body measurements of farm animals. It provides tables that outline the similarities and differences between male and female chickens and ducks, as well as between small ruminants like sheep and goats and large ruminants like cattle and carabao. The document also presents a case study comparing estimated weights based on eyeball assessment and two regression formula methods to actual weights for a pig and cattle. Accuracy percentages are calculated to determine which estimation method provides weights closest to the actual weights.

EXERCISE 1
THE EXTERNAL ANATOMY AND BODY MEASUREMENTS
OF FARM ANIMALS

I. Write the similarities and differences between male and female poultry species (20 pts).
Poultry Male Female
1. Chicken  Pointed feather tips  rounded feather tips
Similarities:  Longer sickles  Shorter sickles
 Bigger and erective  recumbent comb
comb  no spur
 Have spur  dull feather colors
 Vibrant feather colors  smaller and less
 bigger and heavier heavy
 Softer feathers  Shorter wattles
 Larger wattles  fluffy fluff

2. Duck  Bigger rectrices  Doesn’t have curled

Similarities:  drake feather curled feather in the rectrices
upwards  Smaller rectrices

II. Write the morphological differences in small and large ruminants (20 pts).
Ruminant
1. Small Ruminant Sheep Goat
 Gravers browser
 most lack horns majority has horns
 horns are thicker and horns are narrower and
curved usually straighter
 have a thicker and erected tail
fuller coat it has beards
 tail hung down the upper lip is not grooved
 Grooved upper lip

 with dewlap  With white stripe in the
chest area
 Shorter legs
 Black and white

III. Body Weight Determination

EXERCISE 1. THE EXTERNAL ANATOMY AND BODY MEASUREMENTS OF FARM ANIMALS

Guide Questions:
a. Which method gave the closest estimate of the actual body weight of pigs and cattle?
The method that gives the closest estimate is the method 1 which is the
regression formula.

b. What are the factors that influence the differences in the body weight estimation?
One factors that might influence the differences in the body weight estimation is the
accuracy and precision of measurements of heart girth and body length due to instrumental
errors.
