Classroom Management for Effective Lesson Delivery

Abstract

Teachers play a major role for effective class conduction. It is the

responsibility of the teacher to make his/her class interesting so that students are

keen to attend and participate in the class. Some of the teachers keep complaining

about the class which they teach. The problem is normally related to student

behavior and discipline such student miss out on learning. They usually are

irregular to class. They don’t even bother to be present for the class. So many

students today just don’t value their education. If we suspend such students for

bunking class they don’t seem to care at all. A classroom is a formal interactive

environment in with a teacher and students engage in the process of teaching and

learning. The quality of teaching and learning in the classroom is influenced by the

teachers’ ability to ensure effective classroom management. This paper focus on

strategies, challenges and suggestions for effective classroom management and

lesson delivery
INTRODUCTION

Classroom management is a process driven by a teacher who is the facilitator

of learning and also make the various elements (students, curriculum organization,

instructional strategies and materials) work together by demonstrating professional

traits or skills that will make the students achieve desirable learning outcome in

school.

Accordingly to Plato ‘’Do not train students to learning by force and

harshness but direct them to it by what amuses their mind, so that you may be

better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each

Teaching is not controlling, but rather working with the students to learn, grow,

and succeed together. By having strong student teacher relationship with students,

the classroom will be a place for each member to express their feeling and work

together. Academic success depends on these close relationships and guidance that

teachers and students have with one another.

Classroom management aims at establishing student self control through a

process of promoting positive student achievement and behavior. Thus, academic

achievement, teacher efficacy, and teacher and student behavior are directly linked

with the concept of classroom management. Educators have always rated discipline

as one of the most serious obstacle to promoting effective teaching. Proper

classroom management leads to class control and conductive teaching learning

environment. According to Evertson and Weinstein (2006) classroom management

has two distinct purposes: “It not only seeks to establish and sustain an orderly

environment so students can engage in meaningful academic learning, it also aims

to enhance student’s social and moral growth”.

Classroom management is a multi-faceted activity and extends beyond the

traditional behavior management techniques recommended to deal with students

with disruptive behavior. Teacher should develop caring, supportive relationships

with and among students; organize and implement instruction in ways that

optimize student’s access to learning; they may use group management method

that encourages student engagement with academic task to assist students promote

the development of students social skills and self-regulation; and use appropriate

intervention to assist students who have behavior problems.

According to Spencer Kagan, students should play an active role in

Setting classroom rules, by allowing the students to help create the rules the

students are participating in. Everyone is working together to clearly understand

the rule Classroom management refers to all those essential activities which are

highly necessary not only to create but also to maintain a supportive and orderly

atmosphere. It includes planning and preparation of teaching and learning

materials, Organization of the materials, decoration of the classroom, creation of

expectation and establishment and enforcement of rules and routines in the

classroom (Tan, Parsons, Hinson and Sardo-Brown, 2003). The way teachers

conduct the classroom matters has a deep influence upon their own teaching and

learning of the students, because classroom is a place where the closest interaction

between the students and the teachers takes place (Muhammad and Ismail,2001).

Effective classroom management decides the effectiveness of teachers teaching

quality and students learning. Effective teachers create a sound, supportive and

friendly environment in classrooms where students feel safe, respected, cared and

secured.

For this purpose effective teachers create conditions of cooperation, discipline and

responsibility both for themselves and for their students (Riaz, 2009). Teachers are

the ultimate decider of the classroom atmosphere. Their role is crucial in

influencing the behaviors of students.

Classroom management is also seen as the method and strategies an

educator uses to maintain a classroom environment that is conducive to students

learning. Here are some pedagogical strategies involved in managing classroom for

effective lesson delivery.

Respect

An important part of classroom management is respect. Before any instruction

begins, a mutual amount of respect must be developed between student and

teacher. Students must understand that there are certain rules that they must follow

to ensure their success. Similarly, instructors must understand that students are not

necessarily willing to give respect to an instructor without feeling they have

reason. Setting guidelines for the classroom will help develop the respect that is

needed so students can do their best.

Consistency

Order and organization make a classroom run smoothly. Having a consistent set of

procedures and routines that the students are familiar with will help the classroom

run like a well-oiled machine. Many educational experts, emphasize the

importance of having a set of procedures that are practiced and revisited from day

one. The less time that student has to be off-task the more likely the teacher will be

able to have quality classroom management.

Proximity

Proximity helps instructors manage what is going on in the classroom. Walking

around the room and standing next to students who may be causing a problem will

usually eliminate the problem quickly. It is important for instructors to know that

their standing in one place in the classroom will make students feel as if they are

allowed to do what they would like.

Seating Arrangement

Classroom management can be affected by how the seats are arranged in the

classroom. The instructor needs to think about the order of the room and how it

will affect what their expectations of the students. For example, if the instructor

chooses to put the desks in pairs or groups, they need to be realistic about the fact

that there is bound to be some amount of socializing. The seating arrangement also

needs to be organized in a way that the instructor can easily move around the room

and monitor student behavior.

Trial and Error

Any style of classroom management is going to involve some trial and error.

Finding out what works with students and allowing the class to develop into a safe

and secure environment takes time. The most important element of classroom

management is allowing your students an opportunity to understand that your rules

are a part of giving them the best education possible.

Factors Affecting Classroom Management

Time Constrain

You may have plenty of ideas for amazing engaging activities, but

you must make sure you have plenty of time out. Does it make sense to start a

game you know won’t have time to finish? Consider first how much time you have

for each class, consider the goal, or what you hope your students will achieve by

the end of the class. Teacher should plan activities that help the students achieve

their goal, but try to envision a time limit for each. But it’s also important to be

flexible, if your class is having a very productive discussion, you might want to

give them a few more minutes to wrap it up instead of ending it abruptly.

Disruptive Talking

When students talk during your instruction, it’s a disruption, and it’s

disrespectful. For that reason this often the issue that frustrates educators the most.

It’s nearly impossible to prevent students from talking but there are some strategies

that work more effectively than others when addressing the dilemma.

Make eye contact. It’s harder for a student to continue taking at an inopportune

time if they know you are onto them. If they don’t respond to eye contact method,
call them by their name and ask them a purposeful question just to let them know

their attention is needed.

Incorrect answers from students

sometimes, you will be given wrong answers or incorrect opinions but the

way you handle them can either correct the mistake in a thoughtful manner or to

discourage your student from ever speaking in class. As a teacher, it is your job to

make sure that you are always supporting, respectful and encouraging of students.

However, some students may attempt to be funny or sarcastic with their remarks

and answers during class. The way you react will either result in a conflict or allow

the student to see the error and to fix it respectfully. Be sure to set clear boundaries

and to hold your students to their academic responsibilities at all times. If your

students have any mixed feelings about your authority as a teacher, conflict is

likely to occur.

Arguments in class

sometimes, arguments can occur in a classroom due to many reasons. It is

your responsibility as a teacher to discourage and end arguments to maintain a

positive environment for learning. Student debates should be encouraged in a

healthy classroom atmosphere but it is important to make sure that they don’t go
overboard and turn into prolonged attacks and conflicts. Try to look for the

learning opportunity should an argument break out in your class. Perhaps you can

use the subject of the argument to teach a valuable lesson or to understand the

mindset of your students during the conflict. The best way to handle an argument

in a classroom is to take a deep breath and to start by assessing the situation.

Understand what types of statements the students are making and allow them to

have a non-aggressive debate about the matter. As the teacher, you need to stay

clear from judgment and to allow your students to sort things out without making

things too personal.

Silent students

Don’t we all have silent students who rarely or never answer questions or take part

in classroom discussions? It is important to get these students to participate in the

conversations that take place in your classroom to become more involved. You

need to start by knowing each student’s name. Sometimes, these silent students

have been discouraged from speaking out in class by being ridiculed by teachers or

their peers when they had answered a question wrong or voiced an incorrect o
