At her sporting events, they were always her number one cheerleaders. They are her
inspirations for pursuing her sporting career and encouraged her to continually use those
talents by participating in track and volleyball in college. She suffered a foot injury of her own,
with a recovery that lasted over a year. She was extremely upset when this happened, as the
felt like she “lost a piece of herself.” Keune has been working on gaining that back, as well as
growing in relationship with God. Currently, in her junior year at Northwestern, she is finally
able to get back into running and is participating in track during the indoor and outdoor
seasons.
Perseverance has not only been a prominent act during the time of her injury, but has been
relevant since August 3, 2015, when her father was involved in an almost fatal motorcycle
accident. Keune was at a volleyball camp at the time and felt a ping in her heart. Moments
later, she got a call that her father was in a horrifying crash. She had immediate support from
her friends and family. After her father went through such a terrifying accident, followed by the
recovery he had, Keune was able to recognize how minor her problems were in comparison to
what others may go through. This mentality pushed her through her own recovery, as well as
her deepening faith with God. She has always had a relationship with God, though at the time
of her dad’s accident, she became angry and asked, “Why would you do this to the one man
who always supports you and has such a strong faith?”
This anger that she felt, at both God and the drunk and high man who crashed into her father,
turned into a hope that was sparked by the love shown in their community. “Prayer is what
saved my dad,” said Kenzie.
Through thick and thin, the bond between the Keune family has stayed strong through pain,
frustration and anger. As for her, she wants to demonstrate the love of her parents unto others
as she goes into her future, and she longs for people to see her as that, not just Kenzie Keune.
