Lesson Idea Name: Fossils

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 3rd

Content Standard Addressed: S3E2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information on how fossils provide
evidence of past organisms.

Technology Standard Addressed: Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to
construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves
and others.

Selected Technology Tool: Brain Pop, PowerPoint

Lesson idea implementation:

The teacher will introduce the new topic of fossils to the class and ask what the students know about
fossils already. After students share, the teacher will then bring up the BrainPop video to the class. After the
video, the students will then be asked to create a list, or brainstorm, of the importance and role of fossils. The
students will then be put into groups to share their ideas and collaborate. Then, the groups will each choose a
different animal or species to then create a small PowerPoint giving some facts and an overview of their

creature’s fossil findings from use of the internet for research and what they’ve gathered from the video.
Since multiple facts will be used, the students will be able to view the video again if needed. The students will
create a rough draft of their idea as a group, then move to computers to create the PowerPoint. They will also
have access to technology and books for research purposes to add facts or pictures specific to their group’s
organism. After the groups are finished, the groups can share with the class their fossils and information they
found about what the fossil tells us about the creature.
While the students are collaborating and creating, the teacher will walk around the room to monitor
student work and provide assistance as needed. Before each group creates the final PowerPoint, they will
present their rough draft idea to the teacher to confirm they are on the right track and give any additional
feedback. At the end of the presentations, the class will provide positive and constructive feedback as well.
This lesson will take up a whole subject time slot, or could be broken into 2 parts to space out time.
Reflective Practice:
This lesson allows for students to take their learning into their own hands, and use technology to learn more
about a new topic. The use of creating a PowerPoint allows for students to collaborate and have a final
product to share with the class. The implementation of having every group have a different organism lets the
other students learn from each group’s presentations too. To further this lesson, students could create quiz
questions for the rest of the class based off of their PowerPoints they created. To add to the technology use,
website tools like Padlet could be a great way for students to share their thoughts on the presentations or
topics shared in the class.
