NMEA-0183 Messages: Overview

This document provides an overview of NMEA-0183 messages that can be output from a GNSS receiver to external devices. It explains that the messages conform to NMEA-0183 version 3.01 format and contain data fields separated by commas and checksum values. The document also includes a table summarizing the various NMEA message types supported by the receiver, listing the message name, function, and page with more detailed information. It describes how to enable or disable individual NMEA messages using application files or software settings.

NMEA-0183 messages: Common message elements

When NMEA-0183 output is enabled, a subset of NMEA-0183 messages can be output

to external instruments and equipment connected to the receiver serial ports. These
NMEA-0183 messages let external devices use selected data collected or computed by
the GNSS receiver.
All messages conform to the NMEA-0183 version 3.01 format. All begin with $ and end
with a carriage return and a line feed. Data fields follow comma (,) delimiters and are
variable in length. Null fields sQll follow comma (,) delimiters, but contain no
informaQon.
An asterisk (*) delimiter and checksum value follow the last field of data contained in
an NMEA-0183 message. The checksum is the 8-bit exclusive of all characters in the
message, including the commas between fields, but not including the $ and asterisk
delimiters. The hexadecimal result is converted to two ASCII characters (0–9, A–F). The
most significant character appears first.
The following table summarizes the set of NMEA messages supported by the receiver,
and shows the page that contains detailed informaQon about each message.

To enable or disable the output of individual NMEA messages, do one of the following:
Create an applicaQon file in the ConfiguraQon Toolbox sofware that contains
NMEA output segngs and then send the file to the receiver.
Add NMEA outputs in the Serial outputs tab of the GPS Configurator sofware and
then apply the segngs.
Note – The posi/on output by the receiver is the Antenna Phase Center posi/on. You
may want to reduce this posi/on to a reference posi/on elsewhere. If so, you should
account for any /lt of the antenna in such a reduc/on. The se@ngs for the Antenna
Measurement Method and Antenna Height are not applied to the posi/on outputs.
