STATEMENT OF PUPOSE

“Knowledge is Power” said by Francis Bacon, was also my school motto which I still
adhere to. The proverb cites that knowledge is the real power which remains with the
person in their wins or losses. This emboldened me to pursue my Masters & take a hop
from my strenuous work schedule to pursue something which may bring exaltation in
my life. I am grateful to have been successfully enrolled at Deakin University, Geelong to
pursue a Masters in Construction Management and have also received a bursary of 20%
on my total tuition fees. I am writing this statement of purpose in support of my visa
application.

Although I’m a native of Kerala, which is a green, serene, exquisite state situated in the
southern part of India but I am settled in the National Capital with my parents & sibling.
My father and mother are relishing their post-retirement phases of their life after
completing 30 years of work abroad and Government service respectively. My high
school & Graduation has been in New Delhi. My father had been into the Construction
field therefore at times, he took us to his construction Sites. I loved exploring the whole
site, taking a keen interest on the works happening on site with the white safety helmet
that my dad gave me. This ignited in me the fervor to get into the same field, but with a
creative touch.
I have always been imaginative and even now I never left an opportunity to learn
something new in an unconventional manner. My five year Architecture degree
(B.Arch.) simply coached me to carry a pile of data cum information and further deduce
it to design a building. The answers never came right away; they came through
exploration of the problem and ample versions of trial and error, until arriving at a
perfect solution. I realised that undergraduate education has given me only a glimpse of
knowledge in this field.
After finishing my graduate studies, my interest to pursue higher studies was a bit
distracting since there was a plethora of fields open in front of me. I wanted to explore
my real interests, which is why I joined an Architecture firm for my internship. As an
intern at WeDesign, Delhi, I assisted senior architects as we worked on institutional,
residential and commercial projects. It was the perfect time for me to learn and grow.
Another thing which I learnt from my co-workers and seniors was to fearlessly ask
questions. My interning has been a great networking opportunity while I got in touch
with various departments as they guided me in ways to look at the project from a
different perspective. Above all, I understood that you never know when opportunities
may rise for the future. So, we need to buck up and be prepared for everything. The
major project which I worked on was Institute of Management Technology(IMT),
Nagpur which is a prestigious business school located in Nagpur, Maharashtra.
After interning for nearly 9 months, I joined a well-known Canadian based Architecture
firm Arcop Associates, as an Architect wherein I’ve worked on some prominent and
esteemed government institutions like the Indian Institute of Science & Research,

1
Tirupati (IISER), Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad(IIT)& India Institute of
Management, Vishakhapatnam(IIM). The tremendous hard work put into all these
projects paid off when they were published in the newspaper. During my entire job
duration, I worked more on MEP (Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing) and less on
Architecture. I networked with a number of vendors and consultants due to which I was
able to accommodate more valuable outcomes like Communication, Vocabulary, Time
management, etc. This ministered me to perceive my area of interests. The arduous
working hours of 12-13hours on AutoCAD & other softwares made me realise that this
was not the way I envisioned my life after completing my bachelor’s degree. Although
my work hours were hectic, I managed to study for Graduate Aptitude Test in
Engineering (GATE) & got 713 All India Ranking. I fathom whatever I have learned in
my previous organisations will be recycled in some way or the other. Indeed,
perseverance is the key to success.
Choosing to work for a year provided me with the possibility to prudently explore my
career options & simultaneously plan my career trajectory. Armed with the basic
academic knowledge and practical understanding, I thought of moving out of my
comfort zone and explore the various study opportunities abroad. With the help of
social networking platform LinkedIn and my research on institutions, I was strong-
willed to seek my preferred course. I further prepared myself for the pre-requisite
English competency test- Pearson Tests of English(PTE Academic) and scored an overall
score of 72.
I was determined to pursue my masters from Australia due to a number of reasons,
favourable climate being the significant one. Australia emphasis on industry relevant
programs as per the latest industry trends and requirements including work integrated
learning and internships, providing insight into the real-life work environment and
preparing for imminent employment. In addition to this, Australia much like India has a
diverse culture. It will be a great opportunity for me to interact & associate with people
of varied cultures, ethnicity & backgrounds. After contemplating numerous parameters
like Education standards, distinguished faculty, global ranking, renowned alumni,
research oriented institution and academic expenses, I shortlisted Deakin University for
Masters in Construction Management. My choice of this specialisation is motivated by
its multidisciplinary nature which will broaden my horizons and give me flexibility in
professional practice. The course comprises of 16 credits points. The framework
trainsproficiencies of scholars, entrepreneurial leaders, professionals and global
citizens in the student. The course is professionally accredited by the Royal Institute of
Surveyors (RICS), the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS) & Australian
Institute of Building (AIB). Its purpose is the development of academic quality and
public accountability. Deakin also organises Industrial visits for practical exposures
which I think plays a major role in student’s development as well. Deakin has truly been
the trendsetter in learning innovation.

My academic pursuits have however, never prevented me from participating in various

extracurricular activities with zeal. I have been actively involved in sports and athletics

2
in my school and college days. Being a Keralite, I too had been an avid follower of
Football and had been representing my team at both inter-school and inter-college
levels. This sport gave me a sense of identity and belonging to a group thus, honing my
leadership skills which added value to my personality.

The next two years away from home will be very challenging as well as exciting for me
as I have never moved away from my family for such a long period. A sincere effort to
quench my thirst of knowledge and make a contribution in my field of expertise is what
I want. This degree will provide me an opportunity to flourish as a confident and
Independent woman. I am assertive that this degree will lead me towards my ambitions.

I intend to return to my home country, as all my family members are settled in India.
With an international degree in hand, I can look forward to work with either of the
Construction giants like L&T, DLF, Jaypee Group, Unitech among others. We’re also
planning to open a store for keeping Architecture based materials and equipments in
our home town. In recent times, India has constructed marvellous structures
including Urban development projects, bridges, dams and other industrial projects etc.
With a huge potential to grow in the coming years, the construction field looks quite
promising.

I will be applying for Visa subclass 500 and I am aware of the visa conditions during my
stay in Australia:

o 8105 – I cannot work more than 40 hours per fortnight when my course is
in session
o 8202 – I must remain enrolled in my registered course of the same level
(master’s degree) and I must maintain satisfactory attendance in my
course
o 8501 – I must maintain my Overseas Student Health Cover
o 8516 – I should maintain sufficient financial capacity for my duration of
visa
o 8533 – I must inform my education provider of my address within 7 days

I would like to conclude my SOP with a quote “If a window of opportunity appears, don't
pull down the shade.”

Thank You
