IN
SCIENCE 6
First Quarter

Written by:

CARLA ANNABELLE S. TOLENTINO

Teacher 1
INTRODUCTION

In our daily lives we come across so many situations in which we have to

separate some substances from a mixture in order to get a suitable substance
for use. Some of the substances are easily separable just by taking out the
impurities with hand. But some of them cannot be removed by hand and we
need some other methods of separation for such mixtures.

This module offers different exercises for them to further understand the
lesson about the different Techniques in Separating Mixture. This is written for the
pupils who find the lesson difficult.

This can be used to uplift the performance of pupils in Science. It is a form

of remediation or intervention for those who hardly understand the concept of a
specific lesson. It is another approach in clarifying the details more about a
concept and further develops the different skills in Science. This also serves as a
guide for teachers.

TO THE LEARNER

Good day kids! How are you? It’s good to be happy all the time so that
you can understand your lesson easily. If you are not happy, change your mood
now. Wear your big smile and be happy. Today, we will learn the different
techniques in separating mixture.

LET’S REMEMBER THIS

 Read and understand the content of the module.

 Follow the directions and answer the activities correctly.
 Answer all the questions in your answer sheet.
CONTENT STANDARD:

The learners demonstrate understanding of…

1. the different types of mixtures and their characteristics

2. the different techniques to separate mixtures

PERFORMANCE TASK:

The learners should be able to…

1. Prepare beneficial and useful mixtures such as drinks, food, and herbal

medicines.

2. Prepare a process flow on how each component of a mixture will be

separated from its mixture (teacher prepared mixture)

LEARNING COMPETENCY:

 Enumerate techniques in separating mixtures such as decantation,

evaporation, filtering, sieving and using magnet. S6MT-Id-f-2

 Enumerate and describe techniques in separating mixtures. S6MT-

Id-f-2.1

LESSON:

Different Techniques in Separating Mixtures

LET’S LEARN THIS

Mixture is a combination of two or more substances whether in solid, liquid

or gas. The substances in a mixture are combined physically. This means that the
substances retain their properties even after they are mixed. Many of the
substances we use every day were actually once part of a mixture. Somewhere
separated that substance from the mixture so we could use it. Separating
substances from mixtures is an important part of chemistry and modern industry.
These can be done through different techniques like hand picking,
winnowing, decantation, evaporation, filtration, sieving, and using magnet.
These can be done depending on the type of mixture.

Directions: Read the following situations below. Write the technique use to

separate the mixtures.

1. Shanelle wants to bake a cake for her mother. She

bought flour, sugar, baking powder, milk and egg.

When she opens the flour, she noticed that there are

some bran mixed to it. How will Shanelle separate it

from the flour?

2. Typhoon Neneng caused several damages to

some part of Bicol Region. Many rice fields were

destroyed due to flood. Many houses were also

destroyed because of the strong wind. People

from the area are worried because the water

from their faucet releases dirt. How are they

going to separate the water from the dirt?

3, Trisha cooks food for their dinner later. She

prepared all the ingredients that she will be using.

The first thing she does is to cook rice. She washed

the rice with water. How will she going to

separate the rice from the water?

4. Roi is playing iron nails when he accidentally thrown it

in a drum. The drum is full of water and is too deep that

Roi cannot reach its bottom. He thinks for a technique

that he can use to get the nails there. What will he use?

5. Ruben lived near the sea. He works

as a salt maker. He gets a lot of salty

water from the sea. He heated it under

the sun or sometimes he put it in a

burning wood or heated rock to boil it

so that the salt will be left behind. What

technique did Ruben used to acquire

salt from the sea?
