Assignment:

Question 01: A continuous foundation is shown in Figure Q 1. If the load eccentricity is 0.2m,
determine the ultimate load Qult, per unit length of the foundation. Use Meyerhof’s effective area
method.

Question 02: A square foundation is shown in Figure Q 2, with eᴸ = 0.3m and eᵦ = 0.15m
Assume two way eccentric and determine the ultimate load Qult.

Question 03: In Figure Q 3 for a shallow continuous foundation in a clay, the following data are
given: B = 1.2m; Dƒ = 1.2m; b = 0.8m; H = 6.2m; β = 30⁰; unit weight of soil = 17.5kN/m³;
ϕ’ = 0 and c’ = 50kN/m². Determine the gross allowable bearing capacity with a factor of safety
FS = 4.

Question 04: Figure Q 4 shows a continuous foundation on a slope of a granular soil. Estimate
the ultimate bearing capacity.

Question 05: Consider a continuous surface foundation on a granular soil slope subjected to a seismic
loading as shown in Figure Q 5. Given: B = 1.5m, γ = 17.5kN/m³, ϕʹ = 35˚, cʹ = 0, β = 30˚, α = 10˚ and
kի = 0.2. Calculate the ultimate bearing capacity qu.

Question 06: In figure Q 6.A square column foundation is to be constructed over siltstone.
Given:
Foundation: B Ⅹ B = 2.5m x 2.5m
Dƒ = 2m
Soil: γ = 17 kN/m³
Siltstone: cʹ = 32 MN/m²
øʹ = 31˚
γ = 25 kN/m³
RDQ = 50%
Estimate the allowable load bearing capacity. Use FS= 4.

Also for concrete use ƒcʹ= 30MN/m²

Question 07: A rectangular foundation in a saturated clay measures 1.5m X 3m.
Given: Dƒ = 1.8m, cᵤ = 52 kN/m² and γ = 18.9 kN/m³.
Estimate the ultimate uplift capacity.

Question 08: A plan of a foundation 1m X 2m is shown in Figure Q8. Estimate the

consolidation settlement of the foundation, taking into account the three dimensional effect.
Given A = 0.6

Question 09: Consider a mat foundation 30m X 40m in plan as shown in Figure 6.9. The total
dead load and live load on the raft is 200 X 10³ kN. Estimate the consolidation settlement at the
center of the foundation.
