Selected Integrity Management Codes/Standards

 Primary standards relating to pipeline integrity management

include:

 ASME B31.8S, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, “Managing

System Integrity of Gas Pipelines”

 API 1160, American Petroleum Institute, “Managing System Integrity for

Hazardous Liquid Pipelines”

 CSA Z662 Annex N, Pipeline Integrity Management Program

 DNV RP-F116, Integrity Management of Subsea pipelines

 But there are many more………

ASME B31.8S – Managing Integrity of Gas Pipelines
 This Code applies to onshore pipeline systems constructed with ferrous materials
and that transport gas.

 It describes a process that an operator of a pipeline system can use to assess

and mitigate risks in order to reduce both the likelihood and consequences of
incidents.

 It covers both a prescriptive- and a performance-based integrity management

program.

 The performance-based integrity management program utilizes more data and

more extensive risk analyses, which enables the operator to achieve a greater
degree of flexibility in order to meet or exceed the requirements of this Code
specifically in the areas of inspection intervals, tools used, and mitigation
techniques employed.

 An operator cannot proceed with the performance-based integrity program until

adequate inspections are performed that provide the information on the pipeline
condition required by the prescriptive-based program.

API 1160 - Managing System Integrity For Hazardous Liquid
Pipelines
 API 1160 -“Managing System Integrity for Hazardous Liquid Pipelines”
developed in response to amendments to 49 CFR 195 about Pipeline
Integrity Management in High consequence Areas (HCA)

 This standard outlines a process that an operator of a pipeline system

can use to assess risks and make decisions about risks in operating a
hazardous liquid pipeline in order to reduce both the number of incidents
and the adverse effects of errors and incidents.

 The integrity management program must include:

 An identification of all pipeline segments that could affect a high consequence

area in the event of a pipeline failure.
 A plan for conducting baseline assessments of the line pipe in these segments,
and
 A framework that addresses how each element of the operator’s IMP will be
implemented

API 1160 – Managing System Integrity For Hazardous Liquid
Pipelines
 Pipeline segments that could impact high consequence areas must be
identified. The baseline assessment plan must:

 Identify all line segments that could affect a HCA

 Specify the methods used to assess integrity for each segment

 Provide a schedule for completing the initial integrity assessment

 Explain the technical basis for the integrity assessment methods

 It is also required that operators periodically reassess pipeline integrity.

 The risk represented by the segment should be used to establish the

appropriate assessment interval within a five-year period.

 After the baseline assessment, a risk analysis for the line segments that could
affect HCA must be completed.

CSA Z662 Annex N - Pipeline Integrity Management Program

 CSA Z662 Annex N has the requirements for an Integrity Management

Program

 Focus is on the management of pipeline hazards of operating systems

 This is not as comprehensive as an Integrity Management System

 Must consider full lifecycle and include design requirements

 Must be integrated with other company processes that contribute to

successful integrity management

CSA Z662 Annex N - Pipeline Integrity Management Program

 This Standard covers the design, construction, operation, and

maintenance of oil and gas industry pipeline systems that convey:

 Liquid hydrocarbons, including crude oil, multiphase fluids, condensate, liquid petroleum
products, natural gas liquids, and liquefied petroleum gas;

 Oilfield water

 Oilfield steam;

 Carbon dioxide used in oilfield enhanced recovery schemes

 Gas.

CSA Z662 Annex N - Pipeline Integrity Management Program

 Section 9: Corrosion Control Monitoring

 Monitor the effectiveness of an internal corrosion control program should

include, but no necessarily be limited to:

 Monitoring the ongoing operating conditions,

 Deployment of corrosion-monitoring devices such as weight-loss coupons,

corrosion probes, hydrogen probes, and removable spool pieces,

 Non-destructive inspection, such as ultrasonic or eddy current wall thickness

measurements,

 Visual inspection of the internal surface of cut-outs, and

 internal electronic inspection equipment.

CSA Z662 Annex N - Pipeline Integrity Management Program

 Appendix D - Guidelines for in-line inspection of piping for corrosion

imperfections:

 The factors to be reviewed when considering such inspection techniques

should include, but not necessarily be limited to, the following:

 The availability and capability of the equipment

 The age, condition, and configuration of the piping
 The service, leak, and corrosion mitigation history of the piping, and
 Population density end environmental concerns.

 Section 11.7 Offshore Corrosion Control Clause:

 This clause covers the requirements for the corrosion control of offshore
steel pipelines that modify, or are additional to, the applicable
requirements of Clause 9.

DNV RP-F116, Integrity Management of Submarine Pipeline
Systems

 This recommended practice provides requirements, as given in DNV-OS-F101 and

recommendations for managing the integrity of submarine pipeline systems during
the entire service life.

 This recommended practice gives guidance on how to establish, implement and

maintain an integrity management system.

 The main focus is on the Integrity Management Process; i.e. the combined process
of threat identification, risk assessment, planning, monitoring, inspection, and repair.

 This recommended practice is applicable to rigid steel submarine pipeline systems,

and its associated pipeline components, as defined in DNV-OS-F101 Sec.1 C336
and C287, and its Appendix F. It focuses on structural/containment failures, and
threats that may lead to such failures.

 The integrity management system described herein will also be applicable to rigid
risers (DNV-RP-F206 ‘Riser Integrity Management, including flexible risers).

DNV RP-F116, Integrity Management of Submarine Pipeline
Systems
 A submarine pipeline system extends to the first weld beyond:
 The first valve, flange or connection above water on platform or floater
 The connection point to the subsea installation (i.e. piping manifolds are
not included)
 The first valve, flange, connection or isolation joint at a landfall unless
otherwise specified by the onshore legislation.

 The components mentioned above (valve, flange, connection, isolation
joint) includes also any pup pieces, i.e. the submarine pipeline system
extends to the weld beyond the pup piece.

 A submarine pipeline system includes (main/trunk) transport lines and in-

field lines, and consists of export lines (oil & gas), production lines (oil &
gas) and utility lines (gas injection, gas lift, water injection and chemicals).
