Primary school Gorgi Sugarev from Bitola, Republic of Macedonia is a primary school which
started working in 1973 and since then for 45 years it has successfully educated and raised
children aged from 6 to 15 years. There are 644 students from different ethnic communities
such as Macedonians, Roma (which actually represent 70% of all the students in our school) ,
Turks and Albanians. Within the school there is a special department for students with
disabilities Our school staff has had one general training in the
field od Inclusion, but we all share the opinion that the training was rather informational than
practical.Since we encounter special needs students included in regular classes without the
support of aspecial teacher, our staff is in great need of practical training on how to cope and
deal with specialneeds students in the class. The 11 special teachers offer help as much as
they can, but the staff needs to be trained in different areas.. Today, the school is actively
involved in several projects at a national level such as the Project for Modernization of
Education, USAID project for Youth Ethnic Integration in Education, USAID project for
ethnic strengthening of the cooperation between the municipalities from the Pestalozzi
Children's Foundation, UNICEF projects for mathematical and language literacy in the early
grades, Inclusive Education Project, USAID Project for Professional and Career
Development of Teachers, Integration of the ECO standards in the educational system of the
Republic of Macedonia. The school collaborates with Swedish NGO Hand til Hand. As a
result of all these activities our students have been awarded many recoginitions on local and
national level.Civil initiatives
The other NGO that collaborate with our school are
Geosphere,NGO, Sumnal Center for Early Childhood Development – Bitola, municipality of
Bitola and UNICEF through the project named “Socially Beneficial Work- pedagogical and
educational mediations of Roma children from 5-10.
NGO MakeDox project “ We are Visual- education and audio visualization of human rights”

Students, parents, teachers, administrators and school board members in all primary and
secondary schools across Macedonia are the primary focus of the project activities.
Additionally, advisors of the Bureau for Development of Education and education inspectors
at national and regional levels, are also central to achieving sustained change and actively
participate in capacity strengthening activities. Achieving success also demands that the
USAID Project actively engage stakeholders in schools, communities and local governments
in the integrated mix of project activities. Our approach to implementing the project creates
an environment where all stakeholders actively participate in this initiative. They
collaboratively build clear understanding of the importance of Inter-ethnic Integration in
Education and take responsibility, accountability and ownership of the project and resulting
success.
Achieving and sustaining inter-ethnic integration in education is a complex and long-term
process. Our school is a model school of implementation of equal educational rights and
respecting the students needs. Nowadays, our school stuff faces a serious problem with
students’ school dropout and we consider that there is a great necessity of a good training
preparation in bringing the students back to school. The main issue on this phenomenon is the
social family status of the students’ family. They leave the homeland in seeking better life as
immigrants abroad. They eventually return back but they have seriously suffered a great
personal, educational and social change that causes difficulties. Recognizing this, core
stakeholders are the canter of all activities, taking the responsibility for achieving project
objectives and become the agents of sustained change. Our design also carefully sequences
activities so that each phase builds critical capacity for subsequent phases. Central to this is
improving inter-ethnic communication and bridging ethnic, cultural, social and language
gaps.
Also, important for the other part of our application is the use of ICT in our curriculum. The
Government of the Republic of Macedonia over several important projects shows it is
determined to establish an environment that takes advantage of the ICT industry and create an
advanced information society. Now the question arises, how will children, who dropped out
of school, be able to work and learn using them. There are many NGO's that collaborate with
our school but NGO Lifestar- Bitola carried out a project that helped us with reducing the
number ofearly school drop-outs through parents meeting and workshops of multi-ethnic
character etc. There isa project team specially created by the experienced staff prepared to
carry out this project which is of great importance to our school.
