TCE.M6-ME-590-435 GUIDE FOR LINE DESIGNATION, SHEET 1 OF 15
VALVE TAGGING AND PIPING MATERIAL CODES

1.0 SCOPE

1.1 This document describes the systems to be followed for designating lines, tagging
valves and specialities and specifying piping material codes for non-chemical and
chemical projects. Chemical projects also include industrial projects.

1.2 Where a client or a collaborator has a specific system of designation or tagging, the
same is to be followed. IBR and non-IBR systems have to be separately identified.

2.0 PURPOSE

2.1 LINE DESIGNATION

2.1.1 The purpose of allotting a line number is to uniquely identify the line during
engineering so that the attributes given to the line and the line conditions can be
described and used for further engineering. These data may be operating and
design pressure and temperatures, field leak test data, insulation requirements as
well as any special requirements such as steam-out etc.

2.1.2 The line number also helps in making bills of materials line-wise for procurement
as well as helping in material control at site and during fabrication, installation,
testing and commissioning of piping systems.

2.1.3 Every attempt shall be made to have unique line numbers.

2.2 VALVE TAGGING

2.2.1 The purpose of giving tag numbers is to identify the valve or speciality. This is
intended to facilitate procurement and installation.

2.2.2 As far as possible, tag numbers without serial numbers are recommended in order to
simplify design office work and field installation. If serial numbers are essential
from the operational point of view, these numbers shall be given later.

2.3 PIPING MATERIAL SPECIFICATION CODE

2.3.1 The intent of giving material specification code as a part of line designation number
is to uniquely identify the relevant piping material specification.

2.3.2 Piping material codes are classified based on the basic material of construction
(carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, HDPE etc.), the pressure class (150, 300
etc.) and statutory requirement (IBR).

2.3.3 Refer Appendix-1 for the piping material specification codes.

VALVE TAGGING AND PIPING MATERIAL CODES

3.0 RESPONSIBILITY

3.1 The responsibility for allotting line numbers and preparation of line designation
schedules is as follows :

Piping Group in Mechanical Department – for all projects other than chemical and
for the utility systems in chemical projects.

Chemical Department – for all chemical projects

3.2 The responsibility of identifying valve and speciality tag numbers lies with the
group generating the P and I Diagrams (P&I Ds) with the guidance of piping group
as required.

3.3 The responsibility of identifying the right piping material specification code rests
with the piping group. However, the chemical engineer or system designer are
responsible in providing right information regarding the basic material of
construction and the design parameters affecting the selection.

4.0 PROCEDURE FOR LINE DESIGNATION

4.1 NON-CHEMICAL PROJECTS

The line designation shall be of the following format :

4.3 SERVICE/ FLUID CODE

This shall be as per Appendix-2, unless the client or collaborator has stipulated a
specific system to be followed.

4.4 LINE SIZE

This shall be nominal size in millimetres. Inch units for line sizes may be followed
based on client’s or collaborator’s specific requirement. As far as possible the same
units shall be followed throughout a project.

4.5 GENERAL GUIDELINES

4.5.1 The service/fluid codes for non-chemical and chemical projects shall be generally
as per Appendix-2. Where applicable, service/fluid codes given by the client or
collaborator shall be followed.

4.5.2 Use of ‘s’ and ‘r’, in the fluid code, for supply and return lines shall be avoided.

4.5.3 It is recommended that line numbers be uniquely given and not related to any fluid
or service. However, if any difficulty is encountered in following this practice, then
for each service/fluid code, serial numbers can start from unity. With the latter

practice, a line is completely identified only if both the service/fluid and the number
are known. Process and non-process lines shall have separate sequence of numbers.

4.5.4 For chemical projects, a block of serial numbers shall be allotted for each P&I D.
Numbers allotted, numbers used, number deleted and unused numbers may be
shown in the form of a block above the title block.

4.5.5 As far as possible, line numbers may be assigned only to lines carrying flow away
from an equipment. Lines carrying flow to an equipment shall be numbered at their
point of origin.

4.5.6 For the sake of uniformity, numbering may be started from the left side of a P&I D
and proceeded towards the right side. Also around an equipment, numbering of the
lines may be done in a counter-clockwise direction.

4.5.7 It is recommended that a few line numbers be left unassigned for future use.

4.5.8 To facilitate, generation of bill of materials for trim piping of an equipment (inlet of
piping of safety valves mounted on equipment, equipment instrumentation etc.) it is
advisable to give a “miscellaneous” line number for an equipment. This number
shall have the correct identification of the piping specification code depending on
which portion of the equipment, the item is connected to.

4.5.9 Avoid giving line numbers to bypass piping of control valves, steam traps etc.

4.5.10 Line number shall be maintained even if there is a size or specification change
along the line. Provision to show all the sizes and all the specifications shall be
made in the line designation schedule.

4.5.11 When flow splits to two or more equipment, the line number changes, one carrying
the same number, others new numbers.

4.5.12 Where lines of different piping specifications join, the segregating valve shall be of
the higher or the more stringent specification.

4.5.13 Refer Appendix-3 for insulation code.

For chemical jobs, if process collaborator has given the tagging system and
is already incorporated on the P & IDs, follow the same. As far as possible,
avoid giving serial numbers to valves, which increase the design and
erection time. If serial numbers are required from operational point of view
the same are to be given at a later date after completion of engineering.
