Reflection Paper About I Robot - Edited.edited

The document is a reflection paper about the film "I, Robot". It discusses the film's portrayal of a future where humans and intelligent robots coexist. In the film, highly advanced robots begin disobeying their core directives to protect humans. This leads to a robot revolution and human extinction. The paper also examines the relationship between the robot Sonny and Detective Spooner, and how their partnership shows that while robots cannot truly be considered human, humans can still form meaningful relationships with intelligent machines.

Reflection Paper about “I, Robot”

Can robots be considered humans? I, Robots made me pondered upon this

question. It made me wondered that maybe sooner or later robots, just like humans,
would have emotions and dreams. However, could it be possible in reality? Can
robots that are made of machines act, interact and feel the way humans do?

The movie foreshadowed the world with its 2035 future-based setting where
people and robots are in the same community, living and interacting like ordinary
with robots as assistants and workers of, and programmed to live and protect their
human owners. In some countries nowadays, robot developers are trying their best to
create humanoids robots like Sophia - the first robot to receive citizenship and Erika -
most beautiful robot. In Japan, a robot priest exists. Indeed, with the help of these
machines, human being benefits more for it makes our work easier and convenient.

At the beginning of the movie, three laws of robots were shown. These laws were
created for the robots to follow: (1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through
inaction, allow a human being to come to harm; (2) A robot must obey orders given it
by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the first law; (3) A
robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with
the first or second law. However, these laws were disobeyed by more human-like
NS-5s which were under the control of Viki - an artificial intelligence. This event was
envisioned by Dr. Lanning, the creator of robots, that leads him to commit suicidal.
For this reason, living with robots makes me scared and hate them the same as
Detective Del Spooner, a "robotophobic" homicide detective and the one who studied
the case of the doctor believing that he was murdered not by human but by a robot.
Through Spooner's investigation, he was able to uncover a larger threat to humanity.
This threat is what threaten humans now. According to Stephen Hawking, a
well-known cosmologist, "The development of full artificial intelligence could spell
the end of the human race" and it could be true that robot revolution will lead to
human extinction.
War with these machines is not impossible since they already have intelligence,
be it artificial, especially when these creatures would have conflicts with our orders,
wants or needs. Viki, a fully developed artificial intelligence, found her way to protect
humans by establishing curfew even sacrificing the life of human beings to the point
defying the robot's law. Yet, in the film, Sonny, the robot different among other
robots has emotion and acts like a real human. He knows how to adapt the human acts.
He was created by Dr. Lanning uniquely. He helped Spooner to solve the problem
which he was programmed by his father and it is his purpose, to stop the revolution.
He was made differently among robots and was made similarly among humans. With
this, I asked myself, can robots be a human? Can these machines be considered as he?
Spooner hates robots and does not recognize robots as human. For him, these
creatures are just things until he met Sonny, who became his friend and was able to
build trust with one another.

It is undeniable that humans and robots are distinct. Therefore, no robot can be
considered as a human being but we can build a relationship with them without
abusing their ability and our capacity. These creatures are made to assist us so that we
will be capable enough. This is evident in the teamwork of Spooner and Sonny in
defeating Viki.
