CONSTRUCTION METHODOLOGY FOR

JETTY EXTENSION PROJECT AT

MEGHNAGHAT-01.
CLIENT & OWNER: HOLCIM CEMENT [ BANGLADESH ] LTD.

DEVELOPMENT CONSTRUCTIONS LTD.

METHODOLOGY FOR CONSTRUCTION OF JETTY FOR HOLCIM
CEMENT PLANT AT MEGHNAGHAT.

M E T HO DO L O GY F O R B O RE D C AS T - I N- S IT U R .C . C. P IL E
A. ARRANGEMENT OF BARGE (FLOATING PLATFORM):

i) Floating Platform to be provided for construction of Bored Cast-in-Situ piles.

ii) Drilling equipment to be erected on working platform maintaining the tidal
height for Boring in variable water level.
iii) Floating platform (barge) to be fixed for resisting the rolling action.

B. DRIVING OF PERMANENT STEEL CASING:

i) Permanent steel casing will be driven by Drop Hammer weighing over 2 Ton to
deliver driving energy of around 3 Ton-Meter.

ii) Hammer will move through guide to maintain Verticality.

iii) Arrangement for winch, tripod, raker guide etc for driving of permanent steel
casing shall be as per Drawing

C. DRILLING & CONCRETING OF PILES:

Hydraulic drive KOKEN Rotary Drilling Rig RK-2 shall be employed for drilling of pile hole.
Initially steel tube, shall be driven to the ground by drop hammer sufficiently embedded into
the firm soil to avoid leakage by slurry during borehole drilling.

Temporary steel casing shall be welded on permanent steel casing for drilling at high tide
environment which shall be cut-off during drilling at low tide.

Drilling mud (slurry fluid) comprising local plastic red clay and bentonite shall be prepared in
mud tank made of M.S sheet and angles.

Diameter of cutting tools (chisel) shall be around 425 mm to 1125 mm, which are mostly suitable
for drilling 500 mm to 1200 mm diameter pile hole. Diameter of the cutting tools shall be
adjusted depending on soil composition & consistency.

Drilling, cleaning of pile hole, lowering of re-bar cage, tremie and concrete pouring operation
shall be continuous. The pile hole shall be kept full with slurry mud during the construction of
piles.

To confirm stable pile hole, depth and deposition of cuttings, debris, 300 mm to 1000 mm dia
probe made of M.S. Bars shall be lowered into the pile hole.

Pre-fabricated re-bar cage shall have circular concrete spacers to maintain specified clear
cover.
Alternate points in tie bars and main bars will be welded. Re-bar cages will be welded, to full
lap length.

The slump for tremie concrete shall be 125 mm + 25 mm.

Measuring box for aggregates (to measure volume compatible to weigh batching) shall be used
to deliver aggregates in right proportion to Drum Mixer.

The toe of tremie shall be placed at 150 mm above the bottom of pile hole. Before concrete
being poured in fresh slurry shall be circulated to clean the pile hole of the debris that could
be deposited during lowering of re-bar cage and tremie. This secondary pile hole cleaning
operation shall be continued for about 10 minutes or until clean slurry over flows.

The tremie shall not be moved until at least 3m of the pile hole be filled with concrete. As 3m
concrete depth is ensured in borehole, tremie shall be lifted so the toe is always 2m into the
green concrete. The operation of concrete pouring shall be continued until fresh concrete
overflows the pile hole, or until concrete reaches to a level at least 0.60 meter above cut-off
level of pile.

No pile hole shall be drilled within 3m of freshly constructed bored cast-in-situ piles, within 48
hrs. of concrete pouring in the adjacent piles.

QUALITY CONTROL DURING WORK PROGRAM:

1. Setting out of pile locations shall be made in accordance with drawing.

2. The pile location shall be checked for its correct positioning before installation of the
pile Rig and setting out of the permanent steel lining to correct elevation. Elevation of
the top of permanent steel lining shall also be recorded before start of pile boring.

3. Pressure for drilling fluid shall be recorded continuously. Resistance to penetration for
the cutting tools shall be recorded at every two meter intervals, during bore hole
drilling.

4. Verticality as well as the depth of drilling shall be checked by dropping of cone made
out of re-bar & flat-bar from the center of the pile hole at the ground.

5. Quantity of water to be added to mix shall determined from trial mix, giving a slump of
minimum 100 mm, maximum 150 mm. Concrete admixture shall be used to achieve
desired slump and strength.

6. Volume of concrete required to construct each pile shall be recorded. Slump shall be
measured for each batch of concrete and five concrete cylinder shall be prepared for
each pile.
CONTINUOUS RECORDING OF STRATIFICATION:
During drilling of pile hole, samples of soil recovered from the overflow-slurry shall be collected
at every two meter intervals to the full depth of bore hole. The sample shall be classified and
entered into prescribed bore log.

Pile Test: All piles shall be tested for Integrity to check constructed length, diameter and locate
construction defects in Pile Shaft using Pile Integrity Tester of Pile Dynamics Inc. USA. 1% of
the Pile Shall be tested for ultimate capacity by use of Pile Driving Analyzer.

METHODOLOGY FOR IN SITU CONCRETE:

I. After place the Pre-Cast Section, re-bar and form work will be placed as in drawing.
II. On approval of the engineer approved well mixed concrete from the mixture machine
will be transported & poured manually.
III. The concreting will proceed continuously.
IV. Concrete vibrators with 38 mm dia nozzle will be used for compaction of concrete. The
vibrator nozzle will be used vertically in the concrete at 30cm intervals and depth of
insert into previously poured concrete will not be more than 75 mm. Insert time at one
location will not be more than 5-10 seconds and then the nozzle will be withdrawn slowly
with out leaving a hole in the concrete.
V. The site Engineer will test the slump to check the workability of the concrete and take
concrete cubes / cylinder at site to monitor the achievement of required strength.

METHODOLOGY FOR CARRYING OF STEEL CASING & REINFORCEMENT CAGE

I. Steel casing to be fabricated at bank under shade.
II. Fabricated steel casing to be placed on rail/I-section.
III. Rail/I- section to be extended up to floating carrier with slope toward the river.
IV. While steel casing is being loaded to floating carrier pull from the ground shall be
ensured.
V. Carrying procedure of reinforcement cage shall be same described in as item (i) to (iv).
