Exercise1. Reflection Task 1 (Individual Task)

Instructions: On the space below, paste a picture from the internet or a magazine or newspaper cutout of
any photograph that depicts an issue or problem in science and technology (10 points). Then, answer the
questions that follow.

Instructions: Explain your answers in not less than 2 paragraphs for each question below. Add references if
necessary. (10 points each)

1. What is the issue or problem depicted in the photograph?

The issue or problem I research and observed is science and technology don't have any problems by
themselves. The problem is with society and people in general. Modern technologies have led us to physical
and mental laziness. Modern inventions make everything easier as a result of which we become
immeasurably lazier.

Technology plays a vital role in every individual's personal and professional life. However, it has adverse
effects in a way. Science is the discovered knowledge of cause and effect, which society uses to create its
tools (technology) as directed by its understanding. Problems that occur with the use of technology are the
result of failures in the understanding that creates and uses the technology, not the science or the technology
the science inspires.

2. How does this particular issue or problem impact the well-being of humans today?

Often times it backfires, such as the modern threat of nuclear war, obesity and disease rates increasing
due to inactivity because of technology, eye problems from screens, social problems, many parents for
instance will just give their kid a phone to play with to quiet them down or whatever, but by doing that
consistently they avoid interaction with the kid, so phones can cause all kinds of developmental problems
like that, not only socially, but if the kid doesn’t play with physical objects, it could inhibit motor skill
development. Job loss due to technology is another problem that is only to get exponentially worse.

In today's world, when the TV is on, no one wants to interact with other activities like discussions,
outdoor games and sharing time with their dear ones. Modern technologies have limited people only up to
their houses so that people don't even go for a walk or do exercise.

3. Why is it important for people to study and learn about STS as an academic field, especially the issue or
problem depicted in the photograph?

Studies of technology and science gives insight into the understanding and knowledge of technology,
science and knowledge from the viewpoint of the humanities and the social sciences. It gives us the idea to
know how scientific and technological developments affect society and the environment.

Although the advancements in technology have been some of the greatest achievements to date, it has also
had some major setbacks. Technology is stunting many of our social skills, making it incredibly hard for
people to socialize without their phones or the presence of some type of technology. How sad is it to see a
group of friends together, sitting around the couch, yet no one is talking to one another. Put down the phone
and talk to one another. Memories can’t be made on an app, but they can be made in person.
