Cog SAQ and ERQ List

This document provides sample questions that could be asked about topics related to cognitive psychology. For short answer questions (SAQs), it lists questions about research methods, memory models, schema theory, biases in thinking, and how emotion affects cognition. Example essay questions evaluate theories of memory and cognitive processes, contrast memory models, discuss the extent to which schema theory can explain cognition and the reliability of memory, and evaluate research on cognitive biases and theories of emotion's effects.

COGNITIVE APPROACH – SAQ AND ESSAY LIST

GENERIC QUESTIONS:
SAQ:
1.Explain the use of one research method in one study of cognitive processes.
‘Explain’ requires detail of the method chosen and reason(s) why it is chosen.

2.Explain one ethical consideration relevant to one study of the reliability of

cognitive processes.
3.Explain the use of one research method in one study of emotion and cognition

ERQ:
1.Discuss the use of one or more research methods using the cognitive approach to
understand human behaviour.
2.Discuss the ethical considerations relevant to using a cognitive approach to
studying human behaviour.

COGNITIVE PROCESSES
SAQ:

1. Describe /Explain one memory model, using one example of relevant research
to support your answer.
‘Describe’ requires that you give a detailed account of the memory model, using a
study to support your answer.

2. Explain one study that supports one model of memory.

3. Outline schema theory, using one example of relevant research.

‘Outline’ requires a brief account or summary of the theory.

4. Explain how schema theory is relevant to one cognitive process.

‘Explain’ requires you to give a detailed account including reasons or causes. You
must therefore make a link between the theory and how it affects the particular
cognitive process (memory, for example) using an example of relevant research.

5. Describe/Explain one theory of thinking and decision-making, using relevant

research.
‘Describe’ requires a detailed account of the theory of thinking and decision-making.

ERQ:
1 . Evaluate one theory or model of one cognitive process, with reference to
relevant research.
With ‘evaluate’ you need to discuss the strengths and limitations of the theory or
model, and when you evaluate the research, make it relevant to your evaluation of
the theory or model.

2 . Contrast two models of memory.

‘Contrast’ means that you focus your essay on a consideration of the differences

between the two models. Think in terms of sub-headings according to differences; do

not fall into the trap of describing each model and just contrasting them at the end.
Contrast must be carried out through the whole essay.

3 . To what extent can schema theory explain one cognitive process?

‘To what extent’ needs a conclusion: how well can schema theory explain one
cognitive process, and what other explanations might there be? Opinions and
conclusions should be presented clearly and supported with appropriate evidence
and sound argument.

4 . Discuss schema theory, with reference to relevant research.

‘Discuss’ means that you should offer a considered and balanced review that includes
a range of arguments, factors or hypotheses regarding schema theory. Opinions or
conclusions should be presented clearly and supported by appropriate evidence.

5. Evaluate Schema theory

6. Discuss one theory of thinking and decision making.

RELIABILTY OF COGNITIVE PROCESS

SAQ:
1.Explain one study of reconstructive memory.

2.Explain one bias in thinking and decision-making, using one piece of relevant
research.
‘Explain’ requires you to give a detailed account including reasons or causes. You
must therefore make a link between the bias and how it affects thinking and
decision-making, using an example of relevant research.

3.Explain how emotion affects cognition, using relevant research.

‘Explain’ requires that you give a detailed account of how emotion affects cognition,
and you should use relevant research to support this.

4. Explain one theory of how emotion may affect one cognitive process, using one
study.

ERQ:
1.To what extent is memory reconstructive?
‘To what extent’ requires a conclusion: how strong is the argument that memory is
reconstructive, and what might other arguments be? Opinions and conclusions
should be presented clearly and supported with appropriate evidence and sound
argument.

2.Evaluate one or more explanation for biases in thinking and decision-making.

‘Evaluate’ requires you to make an appraisal by weighing up the strengths and
limitations of the explanation(s). Examples could be the use of one or more heuristic
or confirmation bias and the answer requires a conclusion regarding the strength of

the particular explanation.

3.To what extent does emotion influence one or more cognitive processes?
‘To what extent’ requires a conclusion: consider the merits of an argument that
emotion influences memory, and/or thinking and decision-making. Use the ideas of
the affect heuristic, flashbulb memory and emotion and intuitive thinking.

4. To what extent is one cognitive process reliable.

5. Discuss research on cognitive biases.

6. Evaluate one theory of how emotion may affect one cognitive process.
