Learning Outcomes

1. Write an extended definition
Extended Definition

 Expansion of the formal sentence definition (added)
 Usually a paragraph or two long
 General discussion of object, process, or concept
Extended Definition

 Some methods of expansion:
 Explanation of use/function: how it is used, benefits
and limitations
 Description of parts: object’s parts can be listed and
briefly described (if object)
 Basic operations: how it works (object), or what
happens in the process (process)
Extended Definition

 Some methods of expansion:
 Comparison: compare to something familiar to the
reader; similarities and differences
 Origin of the word: historical background for the
word (medical). Eg. “Osteoporosis” comes from 2
Greek words: osteo meaning bone, and porosis meaning
passage. Therefore, osteoporosis is a disease caused
by abnormal passageways in the bone.
The origin of the word should add to its meaning
and help define it. Saying it “originated from
Japan” doesn’t help define it!
Extended Definition

 Some methods of expansion:
 Examples: Examples of how it is used, where it occurs
 Negation: what the word does NOT mean, or what it
is NOT – so readers are not confused.

sketches, or processes can be shown with a flowchart
