1. Aims
This model course aims to provide the training for candidates to provide medical first aid on board ship, in accordance with Section A-
VI/4, Table-VI/4-1 and IMO Model course 1.14 “Medical First Aid«.
2. Objective
This syllabus covers the requirements of the 2010 STCW Convention with Manila Amendments, Chapter VI, Section A-VI/4, Table A-
VI/4-1. On meeting the minimum standard of competence in medical first aid, a trainee will be competent to apply immediate first aid in
the event of accident or illness on board.
3. Entry standards
For admission to the course seafarers should have completed IMO Model Course No. 1.13, Elementary First Aid or attained a similar
standard in elementary first aid.
4. Course certificate
On successful completion of the course and demonstration of competence, a document may be issued certifying that the holder has met
the standard of competence specified in Table A-VI/4-1 of STCW Convention.
5. Limitations
Maximum number of trainees will depend on a number of teaching staff, teaching facilities and equipment, but no more than 6 trainees
per teacher for practical exercises and no more than 12 trainees per teacher for lecturer hours and audio-visual presentations.
6. Instructors
Instructors have appropriate training in instructional techniques and training methods (STCW Convention Section A-I/6). An assistant
instructor and instructor have similar experience for practical exercises.
Practical part of the course is carried out in Izola High school (ex Secondary School of Nursing), lecturer hours, audio-visual presentations
and radio medical advice exercises are carried out in faculty.
Types of classrooms are: general classrooms, special classrooms, laboratories, workshops, gym, playground, library and reading room,
facilities for study and extracurricular activities, conference rooms, teacher’s cabinets etc.
Lectures
Lectures are held from Monday to Friday, arranged throughout the day and supported by practical examples, diagrams, pictures, graphs
and video-presentations where appropriate.
For this purpose an effective technique of presentation is developed, beginning with the brief overview of the course. At the end follows
a discussion with given summaries of the course. Prior lecturers all participants receive a copy of slides of lectures/ practical exercises.
With this training, the participants will gain in-depth knowledge on how to take care for the patient or injured person on board, how to
use the contents of first-aid kit, about basic properties of medicines; medical equipment to be used on board for the carriage of dangerous
goods or the basic toxicological hazards arising in the carriage of dangerous substances on board and the rules for determining the extent
and degree of burns or scalding.
With this knowledge, participants will be able to apply immediate first aid in the event of an accident or illness on board, conduct the
necessary medical assistance in the aftermath of the different types of suffocation and independently carry out medical advice by radio or
satellite communication.
Assessment: 100 % attendance for the successful completion of the training and obtain a certificate.
Planned period of training: monthly, when 6 or more candidates apply for the course.
Duration of the course: 4 days or 8 hours per day, together 30 school hours.

Toxicological hazards aboard, Medical first aid at accidents arising in the carriage of dangerous cargo 2 2
(classification of dangerous substances according to the level of impact on the human body, somatic,
narcotic suffocating and irritating toxins we encounter on board, evaluation of the toxicity of oil and
petroleum products, classifications of dust in connection with the operation of the body).
Examination of Patient (A systematic and complete examination of the patient, palpitation technique and - 2
visual inspection of the injured; collecting anamnestic data of the patient / patient, analysis of these data
and issuing health advice)
Damage to the spinal column (spinal structure and function, classification of spinal injuries and their 1 2
symptoms, first aid, transportation, care of the injured spinal cord injury).
Burns and scalds, first aid and treatment (burn concept, types and degrees of burns and the application 1 2
of "9" and "palm" in determining the area of the burns, thermal and chemical burns, features, first aid and
medical treatment).
First aid for fractures, sprains, dislocation and damage to the muscles (the algorithm of conduct 1 2
reviewer for the injured, the technique palpation and visual inspection of the injured sprains, dislocations,
fractures: signs, first aid, compression bandage, immobilization with splints, primary care of wounds,
abrasions and scratches; injuries and their consequences; the diagnos of internal organ damage from head
injuries chest, abdomen and lumbar, first aid).
Medical care of rescued persons including exposure to hypothermia and damage due to cold (rules of 2 2
resuscitation and first aid for cardiac arrest and cessation of breathing, first aid in case of hypothermia
injuries due to cold, with different types of drowning and suffocation; death at sea).
Medical products, equipment, devices, drugs and recommendations for their use (bandages, medical 1 2
devices, instruments, equipment and accessories for care, the list of products and recommendations for
use on ships, rules and methods of sterilization).
Radio medical advice (structure of the International Radio Medical Centre (CIRM) free radio medical 1 2
services, radio services of CIRM center; the scheme of radio messages asking for international medical
assistance, the list of the main coastal radio stations cooperate with the CIRM, standard notation in the
provision of emergency medical assistance, "medical advice" and "assistance" (code 32, 38 and 39)).
Psychological / psychiatric problems (stress, emotions, motivation, behavior, intelligence, emergency 1 -
situation, the content of thought disorders, sensory disturbances, stupor, organic mental disorders,
peculiarities, psychological peculiarities of the seafarer, psychological peculiarities of separation from
family and society, relationships, communication, relationship man-machine, approach to the patient and
measures).

Refresher training (5-year period):
Trainees: Masters and Officers of the navigation and engineer watch, with at least 12 months of navigation.
