Over Current Relay

The document describes an experiment to derive the time-current characteristic of an inverse time overcurrent relay. The experiment uses a 1-phase autotransformer, ammeter, inverse time overcurrent electromagnetic induction disc relay, and lamp load. It provides background on the theory of operation of induction disc relays and defines important terms related to relay settings like plug setting, plug setting multiplier, and time multiplier setting.

AIM: TO DERIVE TIME-CURRET CHARACTERISTIC OF INVERSE

TIME OVERCURRENT RELAY BY EXPERIMENT

EQUPIMENTS:

1. 1-Ph Auto Transformer

2. Ammeter- 0 to 20 A.
3. Inverse time over current Electromagnetic induction disc relay.
4. Lamp Load

THEORY:

In the inverse time overcurrent relay, the time of operation of relay is inversely
proportional to the current passing through the relay coil. In this relay a metal
disc is allowed to rotate between two electromagnets. The electromagnets are
energized by alternating currents. The field produced by two electromagnets are
displaced in space and phase. The torque is developed by the interaction of the
flux of one of the magnets and eddy currents induced in the disc by the other.
There are two popular constructions:1) Shaded pole induction disc relay 2)
Watthour meter type induction disc relay. Here we use 1 st type of relay. The
shading ring is a copper band of a coil. Effect of shading ring is to produce flux
in the shaded portion of magnet(s) which is displaced in phase and space from
the flux in the remaining portion (u). Interaction between two fluxes produces
torque on the disc.

Some important term related to relay:

1) Plug setting: This is given in terms of either ampere or percentage of
relay rated current. Plug setting is the threshold above which the relay
will start operating. However due to friction, dust etc the operations may
not take place at exact plug setting value.
2) Plug Setting Multiplier: PSM is defined as the ratio of fault current in a
relay coil to its pick up current.
PSM = Fault current in a relay coil
Pick up current
3) Time Multiplier Setting: TSM is generally in the form of an adjustable
back stop which decides the arc-length through which the disc travels, by
reducing the length of travel, the time is reduced. The TMS is marked
from about 0.1 to 1.0.

CIRCUIT DIAGRAM:
TECHNICAL DATA OF RELAY TYPE CDG11:

Current rating: 1A or 5A. Our relay rating is 5A.

Plug setting range: 50-200 %. It means current setting range is 2.5A to 10A in
7 equal steps.

Time Multiplier Setting: 0.1 to 1.

APPLICATION:

1) Overcurrent and Earth fault protection of low voltage and medium

voltage transmission line. For example, 11 kV feeder and 66 kV
transmission system.
2) Backup protection for extra high voltage transmission system in which
distance protection is main protection.
3) Short circuit protection of large induction motor.
4) Over current and earth fault protection of alternator and transformer.
