1 INTRODUCTION
The coating is premire external corrosion protection method for pipelines . As such the selection
and continued intergrity of pipeline coating is paramount importance. It is the coating that
determine the cathodic proection requirements and the magnitude of pipeline maintance
expenditures to prevent failures such as metal loss and stress corrosion cracking .The fundamental
contributions that the coating makes to stopping external corrosion are:
1. Isolating the anode and cathode areas of the corrosion cells from each other.
2. Isolating the common electrolyte –the moist soil – from both the anode and cathode areas.
2 PURPOSE
To describe the procedure for conducting coating integrity survey for evaluating electrical strength
of pipeline coating and provide adequate quality assurance / control of workmanship at site.
3 SCOPE
This procedure covers the methodology of conducting coating integrity survey Pipeline segment
(Like – HDD)
4 RESPOSIBILITY
It is the responsibility of the site engineer to ensure that the readings are correctly taken. The
responsibility shall also cover the proper supervision to take readings work as required.
5 MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENTS
Equipment : Calibrated portable multi meter, Standard Copper‐ Copper Sulphate
Reference Cell, Battery, Flexible cable, Sacrificial Anode, Earthing Rods / Pipe Pieces and Tool kit
with all accessories etc.
6 PROCEDURE FOR COATING INTEGRITY TESTING
The integrity of Pipeline coating shall be carried out after Pull back operation of HDD pipeline
section.

The test must be carried out before the HDD pipeline section is tied in to main pipeline
section
Pipe to cable connection to be done both side of HDD section.
Measure the natural potential at both side of HDD section.
Setup the temporary impressed current system with digital multimeter connected to measure
output current to the GI/Copper strip at minimum distance from HDD Pipeline.
DC source ( 12 V DC battery) shall be used to impressed current into the HDD section.
Positive terminal of DC source connect to the Ground through GI/Copper strip and Negative
Terminal connected to pipeline through potentiometer.
Place the reference cell at the remote end (opposite to impressed current system) to monitor
the PSP of HDD section.
Impress current into the bored pipe start at zero amps and increase slowly until the bored
pipe potential is depressed to 1.5 V ON Potenetial with respect to the Cu‐Cuso4 electrode.
Note the Current from digital multimeter.
After that disconnect the termporary anode and measure OFF potential at entry side and
remote side.
Attached a 6A switch in the (‐) line circuit of the P/L to measure the off potential on both side
of HDD section.

9 PRECAUTIONS
DC source (12 V battery) shall be fully charged before carrying the test.
Ensure all the cable connection before carrying the test.
10 RISK ASSESSMENT & CONTROL MEASURES
Only experienced and trained personnel to be deployed for this activity.
All personnel of the crew should be fully aware of the potential risk involved with the work.
At least one person in the crew shall be trained and be capable of providing first aid in case of
any electrical or non‐electrical accidents.
