family of gas fired engines through the addition of a 20 cylinder
variant and increasing cylinder power from 420 kW to 500 kW
combined with increased engine efficiency.

Caterpillar to deliver the V20 variant to a tight development timeline

• The Iso-Power project demonstrated a 3MW prototype split cycle
recuperated combustion engine with isothermal compression, using
water injection to achieve thermal efficiency in excess of 60%
• Next phases of analytical and experimental work were carried out to
explore use of LN2 to deliver isothermal compression as LN2 is very
cheap and widely available. Simulated capability of concept at >60%
thermal efficiency
• Current project focused on gas transfer/combustion in a cryogenic
isothermal compression, split-cycle engine. Includes high efficiency
recuperator, valve actuation development and combustion in a single
cylinder engine
• On completion of the current phase in late 2015, the performance
of the five sub-systems of the split cycle engine will have been
successfully demonstrated.
