Statement of Purpose

When I began my undergraduate studies in Electronics Engineering, I had an opportunity to

expose myself to a few courses taught in other departments. This stimulated my interest in some
areas of Computer Science and provided me with invaluable academic insight. Also, the
professors from my department have contributed largely in shaping my opinion which not only
influenced my personality but also made me realise my true potential. They also influenced my
goals with the conversations we had. I understand, in order to become a successful researcher, it
is necessary to specialize in several areas without being restricted to a particular topic of interest.
As an aspiring roboticist I have my own interests which includes intelligent systems especially
self driving cars and unmanned aerial vehicles. Also, Computer Vision and Robotics are
areas of my interest due to high affiliation with the graduate degree course.

During the study, I plan to gain practical knowledge on building self driving cars. The objective
behind pursuing this course is working as a full-time researcher for developing computationally
efficient algorithms to avoid road accidents for safe driving. I also plan to begin my
entrepreneurial journey by launching the first startup in my native country India to build assistive
robots and autonomous vehicles.

I am confident that I am well suited for graduate studies in the Computer Science domain for
several reasons. I am determined and persistent, but what I believe sets me apart from other
applicants is the insatiable thirst for learning and personal commitment to achieving the goal. I
constantly like to push myself on challenging projects which enhance my creative capability. I
know very well the level of graduate programs at the IIIT-B is one of the best in the county. I am
also highly aware that it is one among the top institutions in India for imparting quality education
and for its groundbreaking research. Some of the best research centres like Machine Intelligence
and Robotics Centre and the Cognitive Computing Centre are poles of attraction for budding
researchers like me. Availability of well equipped labs such as Surgical and Assistive Robotics
Lab and the Multimodal Perception Lab enables the researcher to carry out high quality
research.

I would like to mention that my interest in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence started after
watching a video of Boston Dynamics launching its first bipedal humanoid robot called Atlas
and MIT’s very own cheetah robot which undoubtedly sets a benchmark in the industry. Also,
the Mechatronics course which I attended during the pre-final year of my engineering helped me
gain insights on the construction of these complex systems. The course also introduced some
advanced topics like pneumatics and hydraulics which helped me in preparing the design of my
bachelor’s thesis project.
This also earned me a summer internship at KUKA Robotics where I took the responsibility of
developing programs for robotic arms particularly the KR3, KR6 robots which are primarily
employed in automotive industries. I also attended the advanced programming sessions at
KUKA with a team of engineers from ISRO accompanying me in developing motion planning
programs for the robotic arms. Also, I learned to control the robots with PLC and worked on
developing a mini-project, a robotic arm for pick and place tasks. This encouraged me to develop
a Voice Controlled Robotic Arm for my thesis project.

My thesis project, titled “Voice Controlled Robotic Arm” is a 3-Axis articulated robot based on
Arduino. The objective behind using the voice control feature is achieving hands-free user
control. I believe that augmenting the existing systems gives a more productive life to
individuals with motor impairments. The robot is capable of responding to more than 15
commands to manipulate objects and perform simple pick and place tasks. Moreover, I also
presented a research paper on voice control technology which is currently under review in the
Frontiers Journal.

Apart from academics, I actively participated in paper presentations, attended symposiums on

machine learning and AI which kept me updated with the latest research and advancement
happening in the field. During my sophomore year, I was involved in the Orion Racing India
committee of the college where I worked along with students from other departments on
developing a data acquisition system for the sensors in the car. I was also involved in the core
team responsible for designing the first electric vehicle. I received appreciation for pitching the
idea of regenerative-braking to make the vehicle fuel-efficient.

Finally, I would like to mention that I am aware of the intensive hard work and commitment to
long hours of study that is essential to pursue the graduate course. Of course, the importance of
geographical and cultural change will be highly beneficial for me in many ways, linguistically,
academically and emotionally. I know that I have the will, the stamina and the intelligence to
succeed in this exciting academic journey. I hope that you will give me the privilege to continue
my study at your distinguished institution.
