GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS


The marks for this assignment would account for 30% of the total assessment marks for this
course.
Submission date : 24 March 2018
Word limit : 1500 - 2000
Format: Please follow the guidelines in the document “Guide to writing assignments” available
on your Elearn platform. (Harvard referencing style to be used and bibliography to be included)

 You are advised to refer to relevant parts of the General rules and regulations document
which is available on our website. You should pay special attention to the regulations on
plagiarism which is heavily penalized.
All assignments submitted should include assignment forms (available on your E-learn
platform and at the Open University of Mauritius). Hard copy of the assignment (with
triplicate assignment forms) should be submitted to the learning resource centre in Réduit
(during weekdays) or your study centre (on Saturdays) with a copy to [email protected]
 The assignment envelope should indicate your Student ID No., your tutor’s name, the
module title and the name of your programme.

ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS WILL BE MARKED ACCORDING TO THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:


Ensure that you have:
1. Answered all parts of the question in sufficient depth.
2. Showed all workings and computations clearly.
3. Provided a good standard of presentation and style.
4. Used graph paper as indicated in the question. Please use pencil on graph paper.
5. Answered the precise question as worded - marks will not be awarded for irrelevant
material provided.
6. Correctly referenced all sources shown on the reference list in your answer. (Harvard
Style)
7. Answered in a logical structured manner and that you have added value by making
sufficient conclusions.
8. Demonstrated a good standard of critical analysis and originality.
ASSIGNMENT QUESTION(S)
This paper is designed to give you an opportunity to synthesize, analyze, and apply the
information you have been reading about and to dig deeper into issues that could be particularly
important or interesting to you.

Assignment Question

Attempt one of the following questions:

1. 'Counselling is a purposeful reciprocal relationship between two people in which one is


a trained person, helps the other to change himself or his environment' (Shorstorm &
Brammer, 1952). Critically reflect upon how counselling takes place in the context of
social work and how this may lead towards clients’ behavioural change.

2. Carl Rogers (1951) proposed three core concepts, namely; empathy, congruence and
unconditional positive regard. To what extent can social workers adopt these core
conditions in their approach towards clients?

Instruction
First, define the terms and discuss the chosen topic. Analyze and synthesize the existing views
upon that particular topic.

Second, you may also include a brief case study to better illustrate your chosen topic.

Note: You will have to include an introduction and a conclusion. Select a variety of sources. You
may include sources such as peer-reviewed journals, your study manual, library books or internet
sources which should be properly referenced as per the university’s referencing policy. The
paper should be roughly between 1500-2000 words (12 point font).
