Computers have been used for business applications for only about fifty years. During this time,
dramatic improvements have been made in both hardware and software, making it possible for the benefits of
computer processing to be enjoyed by not only firms of all sizes but individuals as well. The big changes in
hardware have been the trend to smaller systems and to linking computers of all sizes to form communications
networks. The big change in software technology has been from customized programming to the use of
prewritten software systems.

After completing this online treasure hunt, you should be able to:
• Understand how computer hardware has evolved to its present level of sophistication;
• Understand the basics of computer and communications architectures;
• Know the distinction between physical and conceptual systems;
• Understand how business applications have evolved from an initial emphasis on accounting
data to the current emphasis on information for problem solving; and
• Know what innovations to expect in information technology.

Now, here is how the treasure hunt works: In groups of 3, provide the answers to the questions below
using the web resources listed. Visit the websites and read the contents. You are of course free to visit more
sites not listed in the web resources. After answering all of the small problems, proceed to the Big Task. Be
sure to work as a team.

3. What is an information specialist? Give at least four (4) examples.
4. Is a computer a conceptual system or a physical system or both? Why?
